St Catherine's Notes (10th Jul)

Rebels right back where they want to be There was always the worry that a month of inactivity would play its part. But just like the two Tipp games back at the start of the year, three first quarter goals provided a savage boost and renewal of confidence and when Brian Hayes finished off his second and a rebel fourth, setting up a lead standing at 4-11 to 1-11 to 31 minutes, there is no doubt the Rebels were in a commanding place and playing a dominant role in the first of the All-Ireland Senior hurling semi-finals before a full house at GAA headquarters on Saturday evening last. It was 4-13 to 1-12 at the break and whatever remote Dublin chances prevailed were ruthlessly swept aside in the opening exchanges of the turnover. Patrick Horgan and Dudsie Healy on target almost straight away before back-to-back Tim O’Mahony goals, in another glorious 10 minute spell to the end of the third quarter, widened the margin still further. Score standing at 6-17 to 2-17 to 50 minutes. More to come. There would be no let-up. Robbie O’Flynn now on for the Lisgoold man and blessed with awesome pace, works hard before picking out the dangerous Alan Connolly who duly completes a hat trick. Not his first when stretching to 7-15 to 2-19. We’re now 30 minutes into the second half. Fair to say not all Rebel players clicked. That’s a good thing heading into the big dy. Though again all changes up front clicked. Shane Kingston and Conor Lehane shared a craftily executed four point contribution and will keep every player up front on their toes. That’s how it must be. We will come back to it next week. It’s all heating up now!Club action from East Cork playing fieldsFinal Division 3 Amarenco East Cork Junior Hurling LeagueSt Catherines (0-13) 0-22 Russell Rovers (0-13) 0-17 (after extra time)Openly described as being akin to a championship encounter and after 20 plus minutes of extra time, St Catherines eventually wore down a stubborn and tenacious Russell Rovers challenge, who had previously come close to collecting the honours earlier, before winning out this always close and exciting division 3 Junior hurling league final played at a humid and overcast Magniers Hill in Youghal on Monday evening, June 30th. Glenville/Watergrasshill official Jonathon O’Connell throwing in the sliotar exactly on the 7.30pm scheduled starting time. With the Saints settling to their task that bit quicker. Evan O’Driscoll, quick onto the ball, driving forward at every given opportunity. Leading through three unanswered points to seven minutes. Ben O’Brien among the scorers. Russell Rovers coming right into it. David Crotty very good around the middle. Scoring a trio of points. They might well have led. But Jake Bryan had other ideas between the posts. You get the picture. Pattern had been set. Russell Rovers narrowly shading it and ahead on a half time scoreline standing at 0-06 to 0-05 in a frequently close and exciting contest where both teams were often let down with the required accuracy of their shooting.Level at 6, 7, 8, 10 and now 12 points apiece to 55 minutes, shows how difficult it was to separate two even and well matched teams. Looking ominous when Cormac Aherne, playing much further out the pitch than what the number fourteen would signify, unleashing a potential winner right on the hour mark. Russell Rovers much improved than when losing out (3-21 to 0-13) in Ballynoe from the regular encounter back on Wednesday, April 16th. Kian O’Donoghue pointing from a placed ball virtually over near the sideline straight across from the dugouts had the teams together for the eighth time pointing from a placed ball at 0-13 apiece to 64 minutes. Converting three more from frees in extra time and with rewarding, important scores forthcoming from Owen O’Neill, Gearoid O’Brien, Richie O’Connell and Diarmuid ‘Doc’ O’Connell, success for the Saints on an end 0-22 to 0-17 scoreline. East Cork Board chairperson Averil Geary (St Ita’s) making the post-match presentation. Victorious Saints’ captain Matthew Mulcahy the recipient of the Owenacurra Cup in thanking the sporting opposition and host venue on having a resplendent playing surface.Scorers: G O’Brien and K O’Donoghue (0-02 frees) (0-01 “65”) (0-04 each), R O’Connell and H Draper (0-03 each), E Condon and D O’Connell (0-02 each), B O’Brien, C Leamy, M Mulcahy and O O’Neill (0-01 each).Russell Rovers scorers: C Aherne (0-05 frees) (0-08), D Crotty (0-03), E McGrath (0-02), C O’Dwyer, S O’Neill, S O’Donovan and L Fitzgerald (“65”) (0-01 each).St Catherine’s team: J Bryan, C McAuliffe, D O’Donovan, P Keane, G O’Brien, E O’Driscoll, C Pietropaolo, M Mulcahy (captain), D O’Connell, G England and B O’Brien, C Hayes, C Leamy, B Davis, H Draper. Subs: K Neville, K O’Donoghue, E Condon and R O’Connell for C Pietropaolo, B O’Brien, C Leamy and B Davis (all second half), A Neville for G O’Brien (36’), O O’Neill for G England (41’), G Sheehan for C Hayes (54’), C Leamy for G Sheehan (72’). Also E Sheehan and S Cotter. Referee: Jonathon O’Connell (Glenvi
