HISTORIC DOUBLE FINAL WEEKEND AWAITS GLENVILLE U21 FOOTBALLERS

A huge weekend lies ahead for Glenville as both of the club’s U21 football teams prepare for championship finals. In the first year that Glenville has fielded two teams at this age group, reaching two finals is a tremendous achievement and gives players, mentors and supporters plenty to look forward to.

With an estimated 40 to 45 players involved across the two panels, this has been a particularly encouraging campaign for football in the club. Both teams now have the opportunity to finish their championship journeys with silverware, and a big Glenville following will be needed for two demanding encounters.

First into action are the U21 C footballers, who take on Castlelyons in Castlelyons on Friday, November 6, at 7.30pm. Attention then turns to Rathcormac on Sunday, November 8, when Glenville meet St Colmcilles in the U21 A Final at 1pm.

U21 C FINAL

Glenville’s second team face a formidable challenge on Friday evening against Castlelyons’ first team, with the opposition also enjoying home advantage for the decider.

Castlelyons recorded a convincing victory over Bride Rovers in their semi-final and will present a stern test. Glenville, however, have earned their place in this final and can approach the occasion with pride and determination following their hard-fought semi-final victory over Dungourney.

That contest showed the character within this young Glenville side. They will need those battling qualities again on Friday, along with the backing of a strong travelling support.

Fielding a second U21 team has given more players the opportunity to play championship football, and reaching a final makes that first campaign all the more memorable. The lads now have another opportunity to show what they can do on a big occasion.

U21 A FINAL

Sunday’s U21 A Final promises to be a closely contested affair as Glenville renew acquaintances with St Colmcilles in Rathcormac.

There was just a single point between the sides when Glenville won this year’s U21 A Football League Final, and that narrow margin offers an indication of how evenly matched these teams are. With championship honours now at stake, another absorbing encounter could be in store.

Glenville secured their place in the final with an impressive 1-17 to 1-8 victory over Midleton, while St Colmcilles overcame Aghada in the other semi-final.

The league final success will give Glenville confidence, but the players and mentors will know how difficult it will be to overcome St Colmcilles again. Both sides have earned their opportunity, and Glenville will be aiming to produce another strong team performance as they bid to add the championship title to their league success.

GET BEHIND BOTH TEAMS

Having two U21 football teams preparing for championship finals on the same weekend is a special milestone for Glenville. It reflects the commitment of the players, the work of their mentors and the contribution of the coaches, families and volunteers who have supported them through the underage grades.

There is plenty of hard work ahead in both finals, but these are occasions to embrace and enjoy. We encourage everyone who can to make the journeys to Castlelyons on Friday evening and Rathcormac on Sunday afternoon, bring the black and amber and give both teams the support they deserve.

Best of luck to all the players and mentors as they prepare for a memorable weekend for Glenville football.

GLENVILLE U21A FOOTBALLERS BOOK FINAL PLACE

U21 A Football Championship Semi-Final
Glenville 1-16 Midleton 1-8

Glenville’s U21 A footballers secured their place in the championship final with a deserved eight-point victory over Midleton in Glenville last Thursday night.

On a perfect evening for football, Glenville took time to settle against a physically strong and fit Midleton side. With 20 minutes played, the home team had registered just a single point and trailed by 0-3 to 0-1.

The closing ten minutes of the half brought a marked improvement. A point from Darragh Barry helped Glenville find their rhythm before Ciarán O’Leary struck 1-3 during a productive spell, sending the home side into the interval with a four-point advantage, 1-5 to 0-4.

Glenville made an ideal start to the second half when Jack Counihan landed a terrific two-pointer from play to stretch the lead to six. From that point onwards, the advantage never fell below six points as Glenville built on their strong finish to the opening half.

A solid defensive performance provided the foundation for some excellent attacking football, with a good spread of scorers contributing to the tally. Ciarán O’Leary finished with an impressive personal return of 1-9, while Jack Counihan, Darragh Barry and Rory Loftus each contributed two points, with Darragh O’Bric also on target.

A late Midleton penalty reduced the deficit, but Glenville remained firmly in control and were eight points clear when the final whistle sounded, winning by 1-16 to 1-8.

The result was a fitting reward for the players’ effort and application over the hour and for the work put in by the squad and mentors over recent weeks. Glenville now look forward to meeting St Colmcilles in the U21 A Final in Rathcormac on Sunday, November 8, at 1pm.

Thanks to referee James Bermingham and his officials for overseeing a sporting contest.

Team and scorers: C. Sheehan; C. McHugh, C. O’Mahony, S. O’Leary; S. Curtin, B. Ryan, J. Counihan (0-2); D. Forde, D. O’Bric (0-1); E. Forde, C. O’Leary (1-9), C. O’Mahony; C. Linehan, D. Barry (0-2), R. Loftus (0-2).

LATE SCORE DENIES GLENVILLE U16 FOOTBALLERS IN CUP SEMI-FINAL

Padraig Kelleher Cup Semi-Final
Glenville 2-12 Ballinora 3-10

Glenville’s U16 footballers were narrowly defeated by Ballinora in an entertaining Padraig Kelleher Cup semi-final in Glenville on Tuesday evening last, with a late two-pointer securing a one-point victory for the visitors.

Both teams produced excellent passages of football and some fine scores throughout a sporting and closely contested encounter. There was little to separate the sides in an evenly matched first half, with Glenville taking a two-point lead into the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern as both teams battled for a place in the final. Glenville continued to work hard and held a one-point advantage entering stoppage time, but a fine two-pointer from Ballinora proved decisive, edging the visitors ahead at the crucial moment.

While the finish was disappointing for Glenville, the players can take considerable encouragement from a strong performance against Premier 1 opposition. The effort, teamwork and quality of football on display gave them plenty to build on as they now turn their attention to a Shield Final against Éire Óg.

Thanks to referee Brendan Noonan for his excellent handling of the game, and well done to all the lads for their efforts.

Panel: Luke Ryan, Jack Sheehan, Alan Smith, Alex Downey, Cormac McCarthy, Liam Moynihan, Conor Kearney, Alex Magner, Sean Fenton, Matthew Counihan, Darren Cahill, Eoghan O’Mahony, Aaron Sheehan, Kallam Fahy, Danny Murphy, James Forde, James O’Mahony and Jack O’Sullivan.

U15 FOOTBALLERS BOW OUT OF PREMIER 2 CHAMPIONSHIP

Glenville’s U15 footballers travelled to Church Road, Blackrock, last Friday to face St Michael’s in the Premier 2 Football Championship quarter-final.

The opening 20 to 25 minutes were closely contested, with the teams going score for score. However, a difficult closing spell before the interval proved decisive. Glenville conceded three goals and a two-pointer in the final five minutes of the half, leaving the lads facing a substantial deficit of 4-10 to 1-4 at the break.

To their credit, Glenville began the second half positively, scoring 1-1 as they sought a way back into the contest. St Michael’s responded with further goals and points, however, to put the game beyond reach.

Despite the disappointment, the Glenville players continued to battle to the final whistle against a St Michael’s side who were deserving winners on the day.

Well done to the lads and their mentors for their efforts. Thank you to the parents and supporters who travelled to cheer on the team, and to the referee for officiating the match.

Best of luck to St Michael’s in their remaining championship games.
