GLENVILLE U21s SHOW THEIR CHARACTER TO REACH CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
U21 C Football Championship Semi-Final
Glenville 1-15 Dungourney 2-10
A superb team performance in dreadful conditions saw Glenville’s U21 C footballers book their place in the Championship Final with a deserved two-point victory over Dungourney in Glenville on Thursday evening last.
For the first time this year, Glenville are fielding two U21 football teams in championship, providing more players with the opportunity to play competitive football and continue their development. This semi-final was a memorable opening chapter for our second team, as a very young Glenville side rose to the challenge of facing Dungourney’s first fifteen.
With Storm Austen approaching from the west, the leading edge of the weather system brought wind and rain that made it a miserable evening for football. Huge credit is due to the Glenville grounds staff, whose work ensured the pitch held up incredibly well throughout the game. Both teams also deserve enormous credit for producing such an entertaining and competitive encounter in the circumstances.
Playing against the wind and rain in the first half, Glenville gelled exceptionally well. The lads worked tirelessly for one another, showing composure on the ball and combining effectively despite the conditions. A particularly well-worked team move ended with Dave finishing to the net, providing the main difference between the sides as Glenville went into the break leading by two points, 1-05 to 0-06.
The second half was equally tight, with Dungourney continuing to test the home side. The visitors deserve particular credit for the spirit they brought to the occasion. Many of their players had endured the disappointment of a county Premier Intermediate defeat the previous Sunday, yet they returned to produce a performance that pushed Glenville all the way.
Crucially, Glenville never fell behind in the second half. The lads kept working, supporting one another and taking their opportunities, with some exceptional points scored considering the wind, rain and difficult handling conditions.
A late Dungourney goal put the pressure firmly on and ensured a tense finish, but Glenville held their nerve. A point from James with almost the last kick of the game secured the victory, bringing the final score to 1-15 to 2-10 and confirming Glenville’s place in the championship decider.
This was a fantastic collective effort, with every one of the 19 players who togged out making a contribution. Special mention goes to Gearoid, Will, James, Fergal and Callum, who made their U21 championship debuts while still U17s. All five can take great pride in their contribution to an important night for the team and the club.
Reaching the final is a fine reward for the commitment of the players and management, and an encouraging return from the decision to enter a second team at this level. Giving more players the chance to represent Glenville has allowed this group to develop together, gain valuable championship experience and now look forward to a final.
Glenville now look forward to the final in the coming weeks, with their opponents to be confirmed following the remaining semi-final. A difficult assignment awaits, but the lads can approach it with confidence after the teamwork, character and determination they showed against Dungourney.
Well done to all the players and management on a great achievement, and sincere thanks to everyone who braved the dreadful weather to cheer the team on. Thanks also to the referee for officiating in such difficult conditions.
FANTASTIC FINISH TO THE STREET LEAGUES
All 42 of our U9 and U10 boys can be proud of their efforts following a brilliant evening of football at the Street League finals on Tuesday evening last.
There was plenty of skill, great scoring, determined defending and teamwork on display as the boys gave their all for their teams. Their enthusiasm and competitive spirit made for some excellent games, with every player contributing to an enjoyable conclusion to the leagues.
The finals were a great opportunity for the boys to put their developing skills into practice, and it was encouraging to see how much they have learned. Alongside the football, there were plenty of smiles and fun as players from the two age groups enjoyed playing together and building friendships.
A special thank you to our adult players Shane Curtin and Ciaran O’Leary, who presented the medals. It was lovely to see our adult players supporting the next generation and taking the time to make the occasion even more special for the boys.
Many thanks to the coaches and everyone who helped organise and run the leagues, and to the parents and families for their support and encouragement from the sidelines. Well done to all 42 boys on a fantastic effort throughout the Street Leagues.
A GREAT YEAR FOR OUR U6s
Our U6s brought their season to an enjoyable close on Saturday last, gathering in Watergrasshill Hall for their final session of the year. While the weather meant moving indoors, it did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the boys as they enjoyed one last get-together before the break.
It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate the efforts of our youngest players and reflect on a year of learning, fun and friendship. Throughout the season, the boys have grown in confidence, developed their skills and enjoyed being part of a team. Their enthusiasm has made the sessions a pleasure for everyone involved.
A special thank you to Ciaran O’Leary and Billy Ryan for coming along to present certificates to our six-year-olds and mark the occasion with them. As well as posing for photographs, the pair faced a rigorous question-and-answer session, with the boys making sure they were kept on their toes! Their involvement helped make the final session particularly memorable for our young players.
Many thanks also to Ger Cahill of Glanmire Therapy Hub for kindly sponsoring the treats, which were thoroughly enjoyed and added to the celebrations.
A huge thank you goes to all our coaches for the time, patience and encouragement they have given throughout the year. Their work in helping the boys learn the basics, build confidence and enjoy their football is greatly appreciated.
Thanks also to the parents and families for their cooperation and support throughout the season. Bringing the boys along each week and encouraging them as they learn makes an enormous difference.
Most of all, well done to every one of our U6s on a great year. We hope they enjoy a well-earned break and look forward to seeing them back for more fun and football next season.
UPCOMING FIXTURES — BIG NIGHT FOR OUR U21 FOOTBALLERS
Glenville’s U21 footballers take centre stage this Thursday, October 29th, when they welcome Midleton to Glenville for their Mulcahy Steel U21 A Football Championship clash. Throw-in is at 8pm, and we are calling on the Glenville faithful to come out in force and get behind the lads.
With our second U21 team already through to their final, there is plenty of excitement around this group of players. Their achievement is a great boost for the club and gives supporters another reason to get behind our U21 footballers as the championship action continues.
There is always something special about championship football on home ground, and Thursday evening is an opportunity for supporters to play their part. A strong crowd and plenty of encouragement from the sideline would be a great boost to the team as they take on the challenge of Midleton.
Having two teams competing at U21 level gives more players the opportunity to pull on the Glenville jersey and gain valuable championship experience. With the second team’s final place secured, we now look forward to seeing our A team take to the field in front of a home crowd.
Every ball will have to be contested and every score earned, and the lads will be looking to make the most of home advantage. Let’s make sure they have plenty of backing from the sideline throughout the game.
Spread the word, bring the family and make your way to the pitch on Thursday evening. Best of luck to the players and management team.

LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS TO THE GREAT GLENVILLE RUN!
The countdown is gathering pace! With less than four weeks to go, preparations are well underway for the Great Glenville Run 2026, taking place on Sunday, November 22, at 11.30am.
Runners are clocking up the training miles and entries are coming in as Glenville GAA and Watergrasshill AC prepare to welcome participants from across Cork and further afield for this popular four-mile road race.
Last year’s event sold out, and with no entries available on race day, anyone hoping to take part is strongly encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.
For anyone who has been thinking about entering but has yet to make up their mind, there is still time to give yourself a target and join us on the starting line. Whether you are a regular runner chasing a personal best, returning after a break or preparing for your first road race, there is a warm welcome waiting in Glenville.
As November approaches, race day is beginning to feel that bit closer. For those already entered, the coming weeks offer a chance to build on their training and look forward to putting their efforts into practice. Having a local event to aim towards is a great incentive to get out for a run, especially as the evenings shorten and the weather becomes less inviting.
You do not have to be the fastest runner on the road to enjoy the occasion. Taking on a challenge, completing the four miles and crossing the finish line are achievements worth celebrating, and runners of all abilities help make this event what it is.
The Great Glenville Run combines competitive road racing with a welcoming community atmosphere. The course is accurately measured by Jones Counter, the race will be chip-timed and an AAI permit has been granted. Individual and category prizes will also be on offer, with plenty of competition expected throughout the field.
Anyone who has joined us in previous years will know that the welcome and encouragement are a big part of the day. From the support along the route to the gathering afterwards, it is an occasion that brings runners, clubs, families and volunteers together.
Of course, there is also the small matter of the famous post-race refreshments! The homemade cakes, tea, coffee and other refreshments have become a firm favourite with participants, giving everyone a chance to catch their breath, compare race experiences and enjoy a well-earned reward after their efforts.
Behind the scenes, volunteers from Glenville GAA, Watergrasshill AC and the wider community are working hard to prepare for the morning. Their time, commitment and enthusiasm are central to the event, and their contribution is greatly appreciated.
Entries are open through Eventmaster, with registration costing €17.50. There will be no entries taken on the day. With last year’s race selling out, please secure your place early.
Why not bring a friend, family member or training partner along? Whether you are training together, chasing your own targets or simply sharing the experience, it is a great opportunity to enjoy a morning of running close to home.
Keep Sunday, November 22, at 11.30am firmly in the diary. Four miles, a great atmosphere and plenty of cake at the finish — we look forward to welcoming you to Glenville!
