Well there’s only one matter for debate this week-and with a few weeks now, our Junior Hurlers who contest next Sunday’s East Cork Junior A Grade Hurling Final. For the twelfth time in our Club’s history (14 if one counts Replays) we are contesting the Final of the major competition in the Imokilly GAA Calendar. Our second XV take on Killeagh’s second XV in Cloyne on Sunday afternoon next with Jamsey Kelleher Cup at stake. We contested last year’s final where we lost out to Cobh so on Sunday we’re trying to become East Cork champions for the first time since 1998. The Bride Rovers Club was formed in 1928 and contested 3 East Cork Finals in a row -winning in 1930 and 1932 and losing to Aghada in 1931. Having lost to Cloyne in the 1938 decider we had to wait until 1968 to get our name on the Jamesy Kelleher Cup- first presented in 1947. In the six years between 1968 and 1973 we played in 6 East Cork A grade Finals -including two replays. Cobh in 1998 v Dungourney gave us our most recent win-a victory that led to the County JAHC title.

In what is regarded as one of the classic East Cork Finals (Gate receipts £753) In the second half we trailed by 12 points 6 10 to 3 7. The Rovers hurled right back into the game and Fachtna O Driscoll got a late equalising goal- Bride Rovers 7 11 Erins Own 6 14. In the replay two early goals from Liam Parle saw the Rovers lead by 2 3 to 0 1 after 10 minutes, we were still ahead by 2 9 to 1 6 at the break. Points (2) from Seanie Barry and Sean Murphy saw us 2 12 to 1 6. Erins Own the took over and led by two points near the end of the game. We got a 21 yard free the Cork Examiner described Gussy O Driscoll ’shot as ‘bullet-like’ but it was saved and Erins Own won by 4 10 to 2 14. They say ‘ the darkest hour is before the dawn’ and so it proved for the Rovers. After the defeat in 1997 the following year was one of glory. Victories over Cloyne, Carrignavar and Watergrasshill saw the Rovers back in the Final. Our opponents were Dungourney and the East Cork Final was fixed for Cobh. We were behind 1 3 to 0 3 after the first quarter but a goal from Jerome O Driscoll levelled matters. We were 1 7 to 1 3 n front at the break. A second goal, from Terry Broderick, helped us to memorable 2 13 to 2 6 win. Est Cork champions for the first time since 1969. Team; Andrew O Flynn, Anthony Cahill, Niall Fitzgerald, Alan Broderick, Pat Barry, Barry Murphy, Pat Walsh, Donal Ryan Captain, Batt O Connell, Padraig Murphy, James Murphy, Mike Hogan, Terry Broderick, Jerome O Driscoll, Sean Ryan Sub Batt McHugh. Victories over Ballinascarthy - 14 to 1 13 and Freemount – 2 10 to 0 13 saw Bride Rovers capture the Cork County Junior Hurling Championship for the first time.
