Glenville Bow Out After Epic Junior B Semi-Final
East Cork Junior B Football Championship Semi-Final
Castlelyons 0-15, Glenville 3-06
Castlelyons won 3-0 on penalties
Glenville’s Junior B footballers saw their championship campaign come to a heartbreaking end on Saturday evening, losing to Castlelyons in a penalty shootout after an absorbing semi-final in Carrignavar.
There was nothing between the sides after normal time and extra time, with the teams locked together at 0-15 to 3-06 before Castlelyons eventually prevailed 3-0 in the shootout.
Castlelyons made the perfect start with a goal after just four minutes, but Glenville responded impressively. Jack Counihan opened their account before David Barry followed with a point a minute later.
Castlelyons added another point, but Glenville then enjoyed a particularly productive spell. Barry kicked another point before Jayden Hennebry landed an excellent two-pointer to bring Glenville right back into the contest. Barry was again on target shortly afterwards.
Castlelyons responded with a point before striking for their second goal of the half on 22 minutes. Glenville continued to battle and Jayden Hennebry converted a free approaching half-time to leave just a point between the teams at the interval, Castlelyons leading 2-02 to 0-07.
Glenville started the second half strongly. Barry converted an early free and quickly followed it with another point from play. Castlelyons responded with two points of their own, but another Barry free kept Glenville firmly in contention.
With the game finely balanced, Glenville introduced Michael Murphy and Davin O’Sullivan, while Paudie Cahill was also brought into the action later in the half.
Luke McDermott added an important point for Glenville before Castlelyons struck for a third goal with nine minutes remaining. Once again, however, Glenville refused to let the game get away from them.
O’Sullivan kicked a point and, with the pressure mounting, Jack Counihan converted a 45 to ensure the sides could not be separated at the end of normal time. It was another important contribution from Counihan, who produced an excellent performance throughout, working tirelessly and playing a key role at both ends of the field.
The tension continued through extra time. Castlelyons edged ahead with a point, but Glenville again found a response through the impressive Barry. Neither side could establish the decisive advantage and, after more than 80 minutes of football, the teams remained level at 0-15 to 3-06.
That sent the semi-final to the drama of a penalty shootout, where Castlelyons converted three of their kicks to advance to the East Cork final.
It was a cruel conclusion for a Glenville side who had given everything over the course of a tremendous contest. Having fallen behind to an early goal, they repeatedly battled their way back into the game and showed tremendous character to take the contest through normal time, extra time and eventually to penalties.
While the disappointment was considerable, the Junior Bs can look back with pride on their championship campaign and particularly on a semi-final performance in which they pushed Castlelyons all the way.
A huge thank you to the players and management for their commitment throughout the season and to everyone who travelled to Carrignavar to get behind the team.

Glenville U12 Second Team Crowned Shield Champions
Rebel Óg East Cork Football League Group 6 Section 2 Shield Final
Glenville 3-06, Carrigtwohill 1-02
Glenville’s U12 second team finished their campaign in style on Sunday morning, producing a superb team performance to defeat Carrigtwohill and claim the Rebel Óg East Cork Football League Group 6 Section 2 Shield in Mayfield.
The Glenville lads made a tremendous start and were on top from the opening stages. Some excellent football, strong defending and well-taken scores saw them build an impressive 2-05 to 0-00 lead at half-time.
Carrigtwohill responded after the break, but Glenville continued to work hard throughout the field and never allowed their opponents to build any sustained momentum. Another goal helped to secure a deserved 3-06 to 1-02 victory and the Shield title.
It was a particularly pleasing achievement for Glenville’s second U12 team and a fitting reward for the progress this group has made throughout the season. All 24 players on the panel got game time during the final, making the victory a genuine squad effort and a day every member of the team could enjoy.
The players can be extremely proud of the way they represented Glenville, not only in Sunday’s final but throughout the year. Fielding a second team provides more young players with the opportunity to play competitive football, develop their skills and enjoy representing their club, and this Shield success was a great reward for everyone involved.
Huge congratulations to the players and coaches on a fantastic achievement. Thanks also to all the parents and supporters who travelled to Mayfield and who have encouraged the boys throughout the season, and to Carrigtwohill for a sporting final.
A great morning for Glenville and a brilliant way for our U12 second team to finish their campaign as Shield Champions.

U12s Battle Hard in Plate Final
Rebel Óg U12 Football Plate Final
St Michael’s 5-12, Glenville 3-10
Glenville’s U12 first team lost out to a strong St Michael’s side in their Plate Final last Saturday morning.
The Glenville boys were slow to settle into the game and St Michael’s took advantage, building an early lead. However, as the contest developed, Glenville began to find their rhythm and produced a much-improved performance.
The lads really drove at St Michael’s as the game went on, playing some excellent football and showing great determination to keep battling right to the final whistle. Glenville finished with an impressive 3-10, but St Michael’s proved the stronger side on the day and ran out winners by 5-12 to 3-10.
While the boys will naturally have been disappointed not to come away with the Plate, there was plenty to be proud of in the way they responded after a difficult start and continued to compete throughout.
Well done to all the players and coaches on their efforts, and a big thank you to the parents and supporters for their encouragement throughout the season.
Congratulations to St Michael’s on their victory, and thanks to the referee for officiating the game and to Rebel Óg for organising the competition and final.
A Special Day at Páirc Uí Chaoimh for Glenville U8s
A memorable day for our U8 footballers as they had the fantastic opportunity to play at Páirc Uí Chaoimh for their final Go Games blitz of the season.
For any young footballer, getting the chance to pull on the Glenville jersey and play at the home of Cork GAA is a special occasion, and our boys certainly made the most of it.
They enjoyed a brilliant morning of football, taking on Carrigtwohill, Kinsale, Gabriel Rangers, Sam Maguires, St James and Kilmacabea, with some excellent games played throughout the blitz.
There was plenty to be proud of from the Glenville lads, with brilliant skills and scores, great teamwork, determination and enthusiasm on display. Most importantly, the boys enjoyed their football and represented Glenville superbly on a very special stage.
The day was a fitting way to bring their Go Games season to a close and another important step in the development of this talented group of young players. Hopefully it will be the first of many occasions these boys get to play at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the years ahead.
A huge amount of work goes into looking after our underage teams, so sincere thanks to all the coaches who have given their time and encouragement to the boys throughout the season. Thanks also to all the parents and families for their fantastic support, not just on Saturday but throughout the year.
Days like this are what underage GAA is all about – playing football with your friends, representing your club and making memories that will last for years.
A fantastic achievement and a very proud day for Glenville. Well done to every one of our U8 footballers!
