Brave Glenville Bow Out After Tense Championship Battle

Glenville’s Premier Junior Football Championship campaign came to an end following a hard-fought defeat to Inniscarra in a tense winner-takes-all encounter at Ovens on Friday evening.

With a quarter-final place at stake, Glenville made an excellent start and played with real purpose from the opening whistle. Ciarán O’Leary opened the scoring before adding a superb two-pointer from a free, while Colin O’Keeffe was unfortunate to see a goal effort strike the side netting.

Adam Murphy then landed another excellent two-pointer as Glenville established a deserved 0-5 to 0-1 advantage after just six minutes.

Inniscarra responded with two goals in quick succession to turn the contest around. Glenville continued to battle, but the Muskerry side added several points before the interval to lead by 2-5 to 0-6 at half-time.

Glenville emerged for the second half with renewed determination. Points from Callum O’Mahony and Adam Murphy reduced the deficit before Shayne Curtin finished from close range to the net, bringing Glenville level at 1-8 to 2-5.

O’Leary then converted a free to put Glenville back in front. The teams exchanged further scores during a gripping second half, with little separating them as the game entered its closing stages.

Adam Murphy was unfortunate to see a goal opportunity drift wide, while Glenville goalkeeper Dave Quirke produced a brilliant save at the other end to keep his side firmly in contention.

With only seven minutes remaining, the teams were level at 1-10 to 2-7. However, Inniscarra found another gear in the closing stages, registering three unanswered points before adding a late goal to secure the victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

Although the result was disappointing, Glenville can take considerable encouragement from a performance full of determination, quality and character. The players pushed strong opposition all the way and remained firmly in contention until the final minutes of a fiercely contested championship encounter.

JUNIOR Bs SECURE KNOCKOUT PLACE

Glenville’s Junior B footballers delivered when it mattered most on Sunday afternoon, producing an excellent performance to defeat Ballinacurra by six points in Lisgoold and secure their place in the knockout stages of the East Cork Junior B Football Championship.

Glenville entered the final group game knowing that victory offered their clearest route into the next round. Despite fielding another youthful side, the players embraced the challenge and showed composure, determination and confidence throughout an important championship encounter.

The opening half was closely contested, with Ballinacurra’s goal ensuring there was little between the teams. Glenville played some intelligent football and kept the scoreboard moving, registering eight points before the interval to lead by 0-8 to 1-4.

With their championship prospects hanging in the balance, Glenville raised their performance further after the restart. The players worked extremely hard across the field, defended with discipline and continued to create scoring opportunities through patient and purposeful football.

Nine second-half points provided the foundation for the victory. Glenville gradually took control of the contest, limiting Ballinacurra to four points after the break while steadily extending their advantage at the other end.

The team maintained its concentration during the closing stages and finished strongly to record an impressive 0-17 to 1-8 victory. Scoring 17 points in a championship game was particularly encouraging and reflected the quality and consistency of Glenville’s attacking play.

The result, combined with the outcome of the other group fixture, secured Glenville’s progression to the knockout stages. It represents a considerable achievement for a very young team containing several players who are still eligible for minor football.

The players have shown tremendous improvement since a difficult opening championship game. Their response in the subsequent fixtures has demonstrated the character, resilience and potential within the group.

Congratulations to the entire panel and management team on an excellent and thoroughly deserved victory. Best of luck to everyone involved as preparations begin for the knockout stages.

JUNIOR D CAMPAIGN ENDS IN COBH

Glenville’s Junior D footballers brought their East Cork Championship campaign to a close following defeat to Cobh on Sunday evening.

The team travelled to Cobh knowing that a positive result would secure a place in the East Cork final. Although the outcome did not go Glenville’s way, being in contention for qualification heading into the final group game was a considerable achievement for the club’s third adult football team.

Cobh proved the stronger side on the evening and established the advantage they needed to take control of the contest. Glenville continued to compete and battled hard until the final whistle, but the home side maintained its lead to record a 2-15 to 1-7 victory.

The Glenville team included an excellent mixture of youth and experience, with a number of players making important contributions to the club’s third adult side during the championship. The commitment required to field three competitive adult football teams should not be underestimated, and everyone who represented the Junior D team during the campaign deserves considerable credit.

The experience and unmistakable Kerry guile of Eamon Counihan were certainly missed in Cobh. Eamon was unavailable after suffering an injury in an earlier championship match, and everyone at the club wishes him well with his recovery.

While the campaign ultimately ended in disappointment, the players and management can be proud that they remained in contention for an East Cork final place until the concluding fixture. Their efforts demonstrated the depth of playing numbers within Glenville and the willingness of players to represent the club whenever called upon.

Well done to all the players who lined out during the competition and to the management team for the considerable time and work involved in preparing the side.

The result may have brought this year’s Junior D championship journey to an end, but the team’s commitment and competitiveness throughout the campaign did the club great credit.

FRANK HALBERT CUP

Glenville’s Junior footballers welcomed Rochestown to Glenville for a highly entertaining and sporting Frank Halbert Cup encounter.

Both teams played some excellent football throughout, producing an open and enjoyable contest featuring plenty of well-taken scores and quality passages of play.

The Glenville players worked hard and competed strongly from start to finish. They moved the ball well, created a number of good scoring opportunities and continued to challenge their opponents throughout the game. However, Rochestown ultimately did enough to secure the victory.

Although the result did not go Glenville’s way, there were plenty of positives to take from a very worthwhile outing. The Frank Halbert Cup continues to provide valuable playing opportunities, and the commitment shown by everyone involved was greatly appreciated.

A special mention must go to John O’Connor, who broke his finger during the warm-up but still managed to play the entire match. Everyone at the club wishes John a speedy recovery — and we remain hopeful that there might be one more year left in him yet!

U18S EDGED OUT IN DIVISION 4 LEAGUE FINAL

Glenville’s second U18 football team faced Erin’s Own in the Coiste Division 4 Football League Phase 1 Final in Glenville on Saturday, September 5th.

Glenville had enjoyed an excellent run before the summer to secure their place in the final. Although a recent dip in form during the second phase of the league had caused some concern, the players quickly put those worries to rest with an assured and committed performance throughout the contest.

The opening half was evenly matched, with both teams enjoying periods on top without either side establishing a decisive advantage. Glenville competed strongly throughout the field and matched Erin’s Own score for score, leaving the teams level at 1-5 apiece at half-time.

Glenville began the second half by creating a series of well-worked scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, some wayward finishing prevented the team from turning that promising play into a lead, with several chances going narrowly wide.

The contest remained finely balanced as it entered the closing stages. With five minutes remaining, Glenville held a one-point advantage and appeared well placed to push for victory.

However, two goals in quick succession from Erin’s Own proved to be a decisive blow. Glenville continued to battle until the final whistle but could not recover from that late setback, with Erin’s Own prevailing by 4-8 to 1-12.

Despite the disappointment of the result, this was a very encouraging performance from a young Glenville team largely composed of players who will remain eligible for minor football next season.

Reaching the league final was an excellent achievement, and the players can take considerable pride and confidence from both their overall campaign and the quality of their performance on the day.

Congratulations to Erin’s Own on their victory. Well done to all the Glenville players and management, and thanks to the referee and everyone who supported the teams.

UPCOMING JUVENILE FIXTURES

A busy few days lie ahead for Glenville’s juvenile football teams.

On Thursday evening, our second U14 team welcomes Fermoy to Glenville in the Division 4B Football League, with throw-in at 6.15pm.

The main juvenile fixture of the weekend sees our second U13 footballers face Bishopstown in the Group 4B Shield Final in Glenville on Saturday. The throw-in time has yet to be confirmed.

Reaching the final is an excellent achievement for this young team. We wish all the players and their management team the very best of luck and encourage supporters to come along and get behind them.

On Sunday evening, our U16 footballers welcome Clonakilty to Glenville for a Division 4A Football League encounter at 6.30pm.

THE GREAT GLENVILLE RUN RETURNS

The Great Glenville Run will return on Sunday, November 22nd, bringing runners and walkers back to the beautiful village of Glenville for another eagerly anticipated event.

Jointly organised by Glenville GAA and Watergrasshill Athletic Club, the four-mile road race will begin at 11.30am. The event is open to runners of all abilities, with individual and category prizes available.

The race has been granted an Athletics Ireland permit, will be chip-timed and will take place over a course accurately measured using a Jones Counter.

Entry costs €17.50. Whether competing for a prize, aiming for a personal best or simply enjoying the occasion, participants can look forward to a welcoming atmosphere and a memorable morning in Glenville.

GLENVILLE GAA LOTTO

The numbers drawn in the latest Glenville GAA Lotto were 3, 10, 25 and 31. There was no winner of the €14,300 jackpot.

The four €20 lucky-dip winners were Frank Halbert, Barry Kennedy, Conor O’Driscoll and Caragh O’Shea. Congratulations to each of this week’s winners.

The jackpot will now rise to €14,400 for the next draw, which takes place in Kades Kounty on Friday, September 18th.
