SENIORS OUT- TWO JUNIOR TEAMS STILL THERE.
A crazy week of hurling games where we had our Seniors, Minors, three Junior teams and under 14’s all in championship action -with mixed results. In the Premier Senior County Hurling Championship we lost out to Midleton by the narrow margin of two points. Other results in our Group didn’t favour us so we are out of the Premier SHC County in our first year up at this grade. In reality there is no such a thing as a ‘moral victory’ -you win or lose on the scoreline and though we led with five minute to go it was Midleton who march on. The Minors qualified for the MAHC Final v Youghal while the under 14’s in the Premier 2 Semi Final were beaten by Bishopstown. In Junior Hurling the A team are through to the East Cork semi final, the B team are in the quarter final while our Junior D side lost to Midleton. (Details of u11, u 14 and Minor games in Juvenile Notes)
MIGHTY DISPLAY BUT SENIORS OUT.
At Caherlag last Sunday we exited the Cork PSHC for 2027. Defeated by Midleton by two points 2 15 to 2 13 -it was game where we played some wonderful hurling but just couldn’t raise a few more white flags. With Adam Walsh out injured the team was rearranged and Cillian Tobin took an attacking role. Midleton got an early point but soon we settled into the game very well. We traded point for point but probably should have had a few more points. Two first half goal chances came our way but we just couldn’t get the green flag waving. Cormac Barry was deadly accurate from placed balls but our tally of just six points from open play was low. A Midleton goal just before the break was a terrible blow as we’d matched them well for most of that first half. Eight minutes into the second half and we were eight points down 2 9 to 0 7. A great goal from Davy Barry gave us hope but the Magpies tagged on two more points. From that point on we tore into the game and really took command. Brian Roche did great work to help Ronan O Connell hit a super goal. We were flying at that stage. Points from Conor O Riordan and Louie Roche levelled matters t 2 12 each. Then with less than five minutes to go Cormac hit over a huge score and we were ahead 2 13 to 2 12 after a spell of great hurling. The next score was vital. We had two chances but Midleton levelled as the game went towards injury time. Midleton it was however got the last two points to break our hearts. Defeat is never easy to take but such are the highs and lows of sport -we know them both so well. This was cracking game of hurling in the top Grade of the County and our lads put up a huge performance and we are so proud of them. Yes they were gutted at the final whistle and rightly so after coming right back into the game and then losing so narrowly. They can walk tall for proudly wearing the Green, White and Gold jersey so well and hurling magnificently. We wish Midleton all the best for the remainder of the County PSHC campaign. They are through to the semi final where they’ll meet the Glen or Charleville. Just mighty to follow all our teams all year long, thank you. Thanks to the Erins Own Club their arrangements last Sunday.
EAST CORK JAHC. Our junior A hurlers travelled to Glenville on Thursday evening to take on Carrigtwohill in our 3rd group game of the campaign and we knew anything less than a win and we’d likely be out of the championship. We had lost to Dungourney and then defeated Sars. The pitch in Glenville was in great condition but as soon as the game started the heavens opened and the match was played in heavy rain.
The lads started brightly and point each from both Adams – Hayes and Hynes, got us off to a great start. Carrigtwohill responded with one before Adam Hayes got his second. Scoring was proving difficult, but our defence were playing well and seemed to be coming out with most of the ball. A point from Eddie and a third for Adam had us leading 5 points to 2 after 20 minutes.
Matthew Kenny opened his account with a great point from out on the sideline before a Cillian Barry shot from outside the 21 found its way all the way into the net. Matthew got another point, but Carrig responded with a point before Jack Mannix finished off the scoring for the half to leave leading 1-8 to 4 at the break.
The lads started the second half well again and 2 points from Adam kept the score board ticking over. Carrig enjoyed a purple patch then and out-scored us 3 points to 1 in the next 10 minutes with our point coming from Dinny after a great run up the wing.
Our defence were still hurling well and seemed on top, but Carrig finally broke through for a goal in 45th minute and suddenly the gap was back to four with plenty time well, 1-11 to 1-7. Adam was ever reliable on the frees and 2 more points kept us in the lead as we approached the final few minutes. Carrig were looking for goals, but Ben and the full back line were doing well and Liam was heroic at centre back, Adam was able to keep adding on points helped us to hold out for a 7-point win on a final score of 1-16 to 1-9. The win sees us top the group table and advances us to a semi-final which should be held on the 1st weekend of October. When all the calculations were done the final placings were decided. The two quarter finals will be Carrignavar v Fr O Neills and Cobh v Sars. We will play the winners of the Carrig/O Neills game. In the other semi Killeagh will face Cobh or Sars.
Team & Scorers: B Hogan, K Cotter, O Roche, T O’Sullivan, D Fitzgerald (0-1), L Collins, A Hynes (0-1), G O’Connell, A Hayes (0-9), C Barry (1-0), O Kielty, D Buckley, M Kenny (0-2), E Cashman (0-1), Jack Mannix (0-1) Subs B Knox, S Knox. On a woeful night ‘twas great to see such a big Rovers support.
EAST CORK JUNIOR B HURLING ROUND 3. Our Junior B hurlers travelled to Dungourney on Sunday morning for their final group game against Killeagh. We were on 1 point in this Group after our draw with Youghal and loss to Aghada. With both Killeagh and Aghada on 2 points we knew we required a win to get second place in the group.
We got off to the perfect start to this game with Ryan O Callaghan scoring a goal within the opening minute after Liam broke the ball down for him and he broke through to cooly finish past the Killeagh keeper. Killeagh responded with the next 3 points before 2 points from William had us in a 1-2 to 3 point lead after 10 minutes.
Killeagh then struck for their opening goal before Cillian O Sullivan levelled the game with a great point from his wing back position. Killeagh got their 2nd goal from the penalty spot but two more points from William had the margin back to the minimum at the 20th minute mark 2-3 to 1-5.
Killeagh got the next point before their wing forward put a sideline ball over the bar, not to be outdone Frank responded almost immediately by putting a sideline over for us. William and Ryan got a point each to level the game approaching half time, but Killeagh would get the final score of the half to lead 2-6 to 1-8 at the break.
Killeagh got the opening two points of the 2nd half, but these were cancelled out by points from Adrian and William. We were hurling well but went through a period of struggling to get scores and Killeagh added two more points to have a 3-point lead in the 45th minute.
Great credit to the team however who really upped it for the final 15 minutes, and we went on a run of 5 unanswered points with Shane getting 4 of these and Sean getting the other as we enjoyed a 2-lead approaching the final whistle. There was still time for late drama as Killeagh found a second wind and responded with 2 more points to level the game 1-15 to 2-12. A draw would have seen Killeagh qualify from the group but a great point from Shane who picked up the ball in his own half before soloing down the field and putting the ball over the bar was enough to ensure a 1-point win and qualification for a quarter final which will likely be on weekend of the 20th of September.
Team & Scorers: R O’Riordan, E O’Connor, J Mannix, R Barry, J O’Sullivan, A Buckley (0-1), C O’Sullivan (0-1), L Harrington, J Walsh, W Finnegan (0-6), S Dowling (0-1), F O’Flynn (0-1), R O’Callaghan (1-1), L Forde, S Ahern Subs S O’Dowd (0-5), J Buckley. The Quarter final has been fixed for the morning of Sunday September the 20th at 11 o clock and our opponents will be Lisgoold.
REBEL OG UNDER 14 PREMIER 2 Hurling Championship County Semi-Final
Bishopstown 2-16 (22) –Bride Rovers2-13 (19)
Our Under14 hurlers bowed out of the Premier 2 Championship after a hugely competitive semi-final against Bishopstown, eventually losing by just three points. The game was played last Saturday in the Ballymaw pitch – home of Ballinora GAA Club.
Bishopstown made the stronger start and their ability to take their chances gave them an early advantage. Two first-half goals from Bishopstown proved particularly costly, but our lads stayed in the contest and gradually began to find their rhythm.
Points from Tommy Conway, Alex McCarthy and Dara Murphy kept the scoreboard moving, while Adam Hackett and Jack Fitzgerald were accurate from placed balls. Fitzgerald also added a fine point from play as we began to get on top in periods towards the end of the half.
At half-time, Bishopstown led 2-8 to 0-9, leaving us five points behind but very much in the game. The response after the break was excellent. Jack Fitzgerald got us moving with an early point from play before Adam Hackett added another. Hackett then struck a goal from a free to bring us right back into the contest. Just over a minute later came another huge moment. Matthew Finn found the net from play after a great run by Eoghan Croke, completing a remarkable turnaround and putting us firmly back in contention.
The second half developed into a real battle. Adam Hackett continued to lead the scoring with further points from play, while Bishopstown relied heavily on placed balls to keep their own scoreboard ticking over. There was very little between the teams as the game entered the closing stages. Bishopstown, however, managed to find the scores they needed. Two late placed-ball points helped them establish the three-point advantage that ultimately separated the sides. The final whistle brought a 2-16 to 2-13 defeat, but it was a performance the lads could take plenty from. Having trailed by five at half-time, they showed great character to fight their way back into the match and were still very much in contention deep into the second half. Scorers: Adam Hackett 1-6 (1-2 placed balls), Jack Fitzgerald 0-4 (0-2 frees), Matthew Finn 1-0, Alex McCarthy 0-1, Tommy Conway 0-1, Dara Murphy 0-1.
A disappointing result, but a very good championship game and a strong performance from the lads against a physical and hard-working Bishopstown side. Panel; Noah Collins, Scott Lynch, Darragh Feeney, Cameron Hoare, Luke Fitzgerald, Jack Fitzgerald, Denis Skillington, Tommy Conway, Alex McCarthy, Matthew Finn, Thomas Hegarty, Adam Hackett, Eoghan Croke, Dara Murphy, Tiarnán Lyons, Ryan Hogan, Oisín Dorgan, Patrick O'Regan and James O'Leary.
REBEL OG EAST MAHC SEMI FINAL. Bride Rover Defeat Fermoy in Division1 East semi-final. Played in Fitzgerald Park, Fermoy on Wednsday night of last week before a fine crowd this game produced some lovely hurling.
Our minor hurling team have progressed to the final of the Division 1 East hurling championship after defeating Fermoy. Playing with a strong wind in the first half a Shane O'Dowd goal helped us enter the break with a 1-10 to 0-7 lead. A strong second half performance saw the Rovers push the lead out. A late Fermoy comeback was only finally quelled by a second Fionn Lynch goal.
Team: C. Somers, E. Quaine, D. Fitzgerald, T. Cronin, M. Hynes, C. Barry, G. Quirke, J. Walsh, O. Harris, M. Kenny, M. Walsh, D’ O’Farrell, F. O’Driscoll, Shan O'Dowd, D. Costigan. Subs: F. JERARD KENNY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT.
On Sunday morning we welcomed Kiltha Og Under 11s to Pyne’s pitch for the Gerard Kenny memorial hurling tournament final.
Jerard Kenny was a lovely young boy and a grand hurler and was on our first ever County winning under 12 team back in the year 2000. Above in Mayfield we beat Tracton by 5 7 to 2 1. Garry Murphy and Stephen Quinn were on the half forward line with Jerard in that game, Michael Collins was the team Captain. Jerard died in a tragic accident in September 2001. His parents Mike and Margaret presented a perpetual Shield in commemoration of Jerard to the Bride Rovers Juvenile Club. The Kennys have been great supporters of the Club down the years.
Prior to the match the teams were led on to the pitch by a piper playing marching tunes. The referee Pa O Driscoll then commenced proceedings. The Rovers team were captained by Donncha Lankford on the day. After an entertaining match with some great team work Bride Rovers emerged victorious. A special thank you to the parents for providing refreshments and to Kiltha Og for attending. A special thank you to Margaret and Mick Kenny and family for attending this great event.
