MIDLETON 2-15 BRIDE ROVERS 2-13
Our senior hurlers made the short trip to Caherlag on Sunday afternoon last to face Bride Rovers in an East Cork derby on a dramatic final day of group games in Cork County hurling championships. After two wins from two games we knew that a win or a draw would see us through to the knockout stages but defeat could spell the end of the road. There was nothing between the sides in the opening quarter till an excellent goal from Paul Connaughton pushed us in front and saw us lead by 1-3 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. The margin was down to one, 1-5 to 0-7, after 27 minutes before we finished the half with 1-1, the goal coming from Alex Quirke, to see us lead by five at the break, 2-6 to 0-7. Our first-half scores came from a goal each from Paul Connaughton and Alex Quirke, with the points being provided by Conor Lehane (3), Davy Cremin (2) and Cormac Beausang.
The Magpies started the second period as they had finished the first, in control, and by the 38th minute the advantage was out to eight points, 2-9 to 0-7. Bride Rovers replied with their opening goal of the game but points from Lehane and Finn ensured that we still led by six, 2-11 to 1-8, entering the final quarter. A second Rovers goal on 48 minutes had the gap down to two, 2-12 to 2-10, before three Bride points in a row had them in front by a single point on 54 minutes.
But that was to be the men from Rathgormac’s final score of the game and the men in black and white finished the stronger and points from Cormac Walsh, Paul Connaughton and Conor Lehane saw us edge two clear at the final whistle.
Results elsewhere meant that because we were the only team to win all three of our group games we finished as the top seeds and therefore go straight into the semi-finals. There we will meet the winners of Charleville and Glen Rovers, while in the other semi-final, the winners of St Finbarrs and Imokilly will face either Sars or Kanturk.
Our semi-final is fixed for the weekend of October 2nd to 4th.

CO-OP Superstores Internediate Hurling Championship 04/09/2026
Our Intermediate hurlers travelled to Mourneabbey on Friday night to take on Kildorrery for their third group game. Kildorrery, playing with the wind, started brightly and extended their lead with a goal after a run through the middle of the defence. We recovered well and had reduced the deficit to 2 points at half time 1-09 to 0-10. The Avondhu side started the second half well and opened up a 5 point lead before a goal from Sam Quirke after a good team move got us back into the game. We levelled the game with 15 minutes to play and the game would finish this way with neither side able to push on and secure the full complement of points. Thankfully, due to other results, a draw was enough for us to progress to the quarter finals where we will meet Youghal.

All Ireland Hurling Final 1966
Last Friday 4 September was a special day for all Cork fans who can remember the date of 60 years ago. On the day Cork senior hurlers ended a 12 year wait for an All Ireland senior hurling success and Paddy Fitzgerald from Midleton played a vital role in that victory. Going in as underdogs Cork played with a spirit that knocked the fancied Kilkenny team off their stride and emerged victorious in what is regarded as one of the most momentous All Ireland victories in Cork GAA history. The days and weeks that followed resembled the excitement and joy recently seen in Mayo (at least in Cork anyway) as the McCarthy cup was paraded around the clubs and schools of the county. The night that the cup came to Midleton saw Neally Horgan build a big bonfire outside his house (across from Midleton Park Hotel at the entrance to Market Green SC) to welcome the team which was then paraded down the town to a tumultuous reception. Earlier that day Paddy brought the cup to the school and the push to get your hands on the cup was more dangerous than any ruck in modern day hurling. That victory and the visit of the cup to the schools and club inspired many a future hurler. The memories and joy of that time still linger to the present day with everyone who was either at the game or watched it in black and white on the television and it just proves how important and necessary an All Ireland hurling victory is to Cork now. 1966 was also a special year for another Midleton player Paddy O'Sullivan who was on the Cork under 21 team that beat Wexford, after 2 replays, to win the All Ireland under 21 title. Paddy was also on the Cork minor team 3 years earlier when they won the All Ireland minor title. Mick O'Neill from Midleton was a selector on both these Cork minor and under 21 teams. Great and happy days.

U16 Championship Quarter Final
Last Sunday morning our U16 girls played St Finbarrs is the quarter final of their Championship campaign. On a wet and blustery morning the girls got stuck and put some lovely points on the board and were in a good position at half time. St Finbarr’s had the wind advantage in the second half, but Midleton got it going when it mattered and came out eventual winners. Great credit is due to the Midleton Mentors on the side line who got 27 girls on the pitch for game time!!
Next up in the Semi Final is a home game v Newmarket.
U12
Well done to our U12 girls team who participated in the Passage West Lidl Ladies Football Blitz. With 61 teams taking part on the day it was an early start with Midleton having 2 teams participating. Games were short at 12 minutes but there was plenty of football on display from the girls who faced opponents from Dublin & Cork.
The girls won best dressed team on the day. The first of many silverware for this group of girls. Thanks to Passage West G.A.A. Club for a fantastic day out.

Midleton 4-12 Castleyons 0-12
Our Premier Junior team played their final group game V Castlelyons last Wednesday 2nd Sept in Clonmult, Midleton. A win would ensure top spot in the group and the girls duly obliged . An early point by Vivienne Gleeson and 2 quick fire goals by Faye Dunlea saw us take control and despite Castlelyons getting some good points a 3rd goal by Sadhbh Beausang before half time saw us into a comfortable lead of 8 points at the break. A couple of early scores by Castlelyons at the beginning of the 2nd half were cancelled out by a 2nd goal from Sadhbh, following a brilliant pass from Sarah Goulding. Further points from Sadhbh and Sarah from play and Faye from frees saw us safely home and first place in the group confirmed. Try as they might, Castlelyons could not get past Jill Connuaghton in goals and the superb Sorcha Cronin at full back .
We can now look forward to a home Semi Final V Mallow in Park South on Friday Sept 11th , 7:15 throw in.

Barry O' Sullivan Championship, in Balinora, Sept 7th .
Balinora 6-05 Midleton 4-09
Our Barry O'Sullivan squad travelled to Balinora on Monday Sept 7th and even though somewhat depleted they gave a brilliant display in difficult conditions. Trailing 3-4 to 4 points at ht they roared back into the game and at one point midway through the 2nd half led by 3 points . With goals coming from Aoise Woods , Gabby Smith and Sarah McConville. It was nip and tuck all the way to the end and a brilliant save late on by the Balinora goalkeeper preserved their 2 point lead and they held out for the win in what really was a great game. Jaimey Healy , Leah Griffin, Eve Fay, Rebecca Ryan and Caoimhe Hanrahan were all outstanding in the back line. Saoirse Cashman gave it everything and when our forward line got going in the 2nd half they were superb with Aoise Woods, Gabby Smith , Sarah McConville and Amy O'Connell leading the way .
Despite the loss we have qualified for a home QF v Newcestown next Monday night in Park South - 7pm throw in, in Park South.

Fe15 P1 Hurling League Quarter Final
Midleton 4-27 Carbery 1-11
Excellent team performance last week by our under 15s to come out on top against a very good Carbery Divisional team. Our lads were tuned in from the word go and this was shown throughout the field. The workrate and attitude with and without the ball was top class and were deserving winners on the night. Next up in the semi-final is another very good Divisional team in Duhallow on Friday 25th Sept at 6pm in Freemount GAA.

We have had a number of games recently. In P2 football we had a home game against group topping Glanmire in PS on the 24th of August. Despite a heartening performance in which we were in touching distance throughout we eventually got beaten by a flattering to them 2-15 to 13 pts. We also went to Caherlag this past Monday. We performed admirably against an evenly matched Erin’s Own. The performance gladly gave us a well deserved win, even if it took a last minute goal to edge this exciting contest. This result leave in 3rd place and our reward is a home shield semifinal, details to follow.
On the 25th of August our second football team hosted Erin’s own in our third game in the Div 4 league. The lads did the business on a 4-7 to 3-5 score line. This result makes our final game away to Bandon a vital tie to see where we end up in this competition
Our bravest and most determined team finally bowed out of the championship on Sunday the 30th of August. Our second hurling team were wrongly put, despite a major challenge from our club, in an incredibly strong Div 1 east grade. Despite a tough year which ended in defeat to Nemo’s first team the lads can hold their heads up in the fact that they improved as the year went on and lads got loads of game time. Despite heavy defeats the lads to their credit kept turning up in great numbers and played their hearts out on every occasion. Thanks lads for your continued efforts.
