BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.

  MASSIVE HURLING WEEKEND. With our four hurling teams in action this weekend  it promises to be a hectic, crazy few days! Add in the fact the girls have several big games, our under 14 hurlers are in a County Semi Final- and we host a big County Championship match -never a dull moment! Yes indeed we are coming to what is called ‘the business end’ of the season in all grades so it’s games all the way.

SENIOR HURLING. Several serious injuries have been of huge concern to us since the Pairc Ui Rinn game. We will unfortunately be missing a few of the team that played v Newcestown and against the Barrs so next Sunday as we take on Midleton ‘twill be a huge challenge. The Magpies have two games won and we have just one victory so it’s simple enough-if we win by more than 5 points we progress but if we lose we’re out of the Championship.  Despite the injuries the lads have trained well. They are well aware that we need a massive performance on Sunday to be in with a shout. Go for it lads, ye are well capable of winning this one. Like all the other PSHC Round 3 games we are playing at 4 0 clock – our game is in Pairc Ui Chonaill, Caherlag, home of Erin’s Own GAA. We wish a speedy recovery to all our injured players.

 

JUNIOR HURLING. We have our three Junior teams in Championship action from tonight Thursday until next Monday night. All are still in contention but it’s simply winners take all at this stage. In Junior A a win over Carrigtwohill in Glenville tonight would see us through. Similarly on Sunday evening under lights in Dungourney the Junior B team meet Killeagh needing nothing less than a win. Then on Monday at half 7 in Midleton’s new grounds, Park South, we meet Midleton. The Junior D’s have a win and a draw from their two games. REBEL OG MINOR FC. Bride Rovers Defeat Aghada 1-15 to 0-12

In the fourth game of the division 1 minor football championship, the Rovers faced Aghada away below in Rostellan. A strong opening quarter saw the Rovers lead 5 points to 1  thanks to points from Míchael Walsh, Finn O'Driscoll, Daragh O'Farrell and Cathal Barry and a strong performance from our defenders and goalkeeper Shane McCarthy. Aghada finished the half with a run of points meaning the game was level with 6 points apiece at half time. The Rovers pulled ahead in the second half thanks to scores like a two-pointer from Finn O'Driscoll, a left-footed point from Shane O'Dowd and a goal from Denis Fitzgerald which led the Rovers to a 1-15 to 12 point victory.

UNDER 10’s TRIP TO TIPP.  Our Under10s travelled to Clonmel Commercials on Saturday to play in the 9 a side Eddie Hanrahan tournament. The boys won their two group games and reached the Cup Final against Portlaoise. The boys played brilliant throughout however just lost out in the end. The lads were excellent throughout, playing some great football.

CONGRATS BALLYDUFF. Well done to our West Waterford neighbours Ballyduff Upper on winning the 2026 Waterford County Intermediate Hurling Final last Saturday evening. The men in Red beat Roanmore to make up for the heartbreaks of recent years. The Ballyduff Club had some very tragic losses in their community this year so last Saturday’s game was an emotional occasion for all concerned and cause for great celebrations all along the Banks of Blackwater.  Congratulations from all in Bride Rovers.

UNDER 14’s in COUNTY SEMI FINAL. Our under 14 hurlers have put in some fine performances this year in both League and Championship. On next Saturday they meet Bishopstown in the County Premier “ Hurling semi Final. The game is fixed for 2 0 clock in the Ballinora GAA Grounds at Ballymaw -the Eircode for the pitch is  T 12 RXW 1. The other semi final between Ballincollig and Courcey Rovers is on at the same venue at 12.15 so a big crowd is expected. Best of luck to our lads.

PADDY GEARY,TALLOWRIP.  The death occurred at the weekend of Paddy Geary of Moorehill, Tallow. Known affectionately as ‘The Gare’ Paddy was an outstanding musician with the Brideside Serenaders and later with The Society Four. Paddy played the fiddle but was better known as a drummer. The Society Four played regularly for GAA Club Dinner dances in Fermoy, Midleton and Garryvoe from the 1960’s right up until the early 1980’s. May Paddy rest in peace.

BIG UNDER 8 EVENT COMING. On Saturday week, commencing at 10am in Pynes we host an inter county under 8 hurling blitz. The young hurlers of Bride Rovers, Blackrock, Kinsale, Inniscarra  and Cashel will play a series of games and all are welcome.

FERROUS METAL COORDINATION & DISPOSAL.. Thanks to all who helped in any way with the very successful event recently whereby many bikes, wheelbarrows, trailers, barrels, saucepans, gates, buckets, biscuit tins, swings, ironing boards, trampolines, lawnmowers and items of cutlers were correctly and suitably decommissioned.

GAME ON SAT. WE host Fermoy v Erins on Saturday at 5.30. This game will attract a big crowd so all hands on deck -be there as early as you can.

SEPTEMBER 4th 1966- ‘Cork Win After Twelve Years’

Friday September the 4th 2026 marks exactly sixty years since the great Cork All Ireland Hurling win of 1966. In the wilderness since 1954 Cork were probably rank outsiders at the start of 66 but after a heavy NHL semi final loss (4 11 to 1 8) to Kilkenny Cork gathered momentum with our own Seanie Barry starring. After a draw with Clare Cork got going, winning the replay and  then defeating Limerick and Waterford to win Munster.  Then on a glorious September Sunday Cork defeated Kilkenny by 3 9 to 1 10. That team of 1966 will never be forgotten. Some have gone to their eternal reward but this weekend, as the remaining hurling heroes of 60 years ago gather together once more, we salute them all

  HOW WE’RE FIXED NOW. Well things are a lot clearer before all this Weekends  Round 3 Games. In Senior Hurling we need to beat Midleton by more than 5 points to progress in the Championship. In Junior A Hurling – it’s simple enough- our game v Carrigtwohill tonight is a straight knock-out, winners go through and the defeated team go out.  In Junior B Hurling a win over Killeagh would see us on 3 points and if Youghal beat Aghada we’d be 2nd in the Group and progress. In Junior D Hurling if we beat Midleton we’re through but if we lose to Midleton Dungourney or Midleton could overtake us. In Junior B Football we have to beat Cobh to progress.

 YMPATHY. Our sincere sympathy to the family of the late Sonny O Brien of Castlelyons who died last weekend. A mighty GAA man Sonny was in Pairc na Bride two weeks ago for the Hill v Castlelyons game. He loved the GAA and was a great Juvenile Club Chairman in Castlelyons a few years back. He absolutely adored going to games and then talking about them later. He is well remembered too for the outstanding service he gave as Pipe Major with the Castlelyons Pipe Band over many, many years. May he rest in peace.
