P.I H.C. V Cloyne

Castlemartyr came out on the wrong end of Saturday's game against Cloyne, with our opponents producing a strong finish to run out 2-13 to 2-9 winners. Failure to raise more than three white flags in the second half ultimately dictated that our position was not going to be secure going into the final stages, despite having led the game for the most part.

Goals early and late by Brian Lawton in the first half gave Castlemartyr an advantage of 2-6 to 1-6 at the change of ends after a competitive but low scoring first half. The returns were even more scarce during the third quarter and although Castlemartyr held an advantage of 2-9 to 1-9 inside the last 10 minutes, we failed to score again and Cloyne took full advantage to secure their place in the knockout stages .

Our game with Dungourney in Killeagh on Sunday week , will decide who joins them in that stage of the championship.

Juniors Make Winning Start

Castlemartyr 0-14 Lisgoold 0-13

A fast return to Carrigtwohill on Sunday morning made for a happier ending, as our junior team defeated Lisgoold by 0-14 to 0-13 in their first game of the campaign. So often in match winning performances, forwards can take the plaudits, but on this occasion it's appropriate to name check all six defenders for their excellent contribution throughout. 

 Declan Kelly set the tone with an eager beaver performance with Richard Burke excellent at full back and Odhran Cantwell solid in the other corner. Finn Connaughton, on his first junior championship start, read the game very well at centre back, where he was flanked by Dave Lawton and David Lynch both of whom made very laudable contributions throughout. When the pressure came on all six players maintained their composure in front of very reliable net minder James O'Donovan.

Pressure did come on, particularly late in a game of few goal chances, Lisgoold to their credit made life difficult for our forwards, although a few missed opportunities by "the reds" could have proved costly in the end.  

With midfielders James Deehan and Oran Murphy working hard and Niall O'Donovan busy in attack, Castlemartyr gave as good as they got in an even opening which set the template for the contest as we played into the wind in the first thirty minutes. Top scorer Dáire Coughlan scored four first half points as Castlemartyr led by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break. A sweet point from a difficult angle from Ewan Cashman was a real eye catcher whilst the lively Murphy brothers Cian and Oran, also raised flags.

Another well taken point by Cian and a fine strike by captain Darragh Cashman pushed us into a three points advantage soon after the resumption, but daylight was seldom seen as Lisgoold kept in our wing mirrors. Jamie Stack's well struck effort on 50 minutes seemed to create a bit of breathing space as the gap stretched to four. Back came Lisgoold again and we were thankful for Cian Murphy's third of the day as the clock ticked into the red which ultimately saw us home safely, in the face of a strong finish by the opposition. 

Next up is a meeting with Midleton in Cobh on Saturday week at 2pm..

Big Crowd

A big crow witnessed the Erin's Own/Killeagh senior 'A' clash at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to all who helped in any way on the day and who prepared our facilities. Well done to our own Jimmy Smiddy and his team of officials who were in charge on the field.

On Your Bike Patsy!

Our own Patsy Cashman has on his bucket list to cycle Mizen to Malin with a few years. So this year he didn't take part in Tour De Munster for Down Syndrome. 

Now he is set to take on the entire vertical length of Ireland over 600 KM, pedaling through busy roads & towns to quiet boreens and rural villages and a few mountains. It will be an epic journey. So with the Atlantic sea breeze on Thursday 27th August Patsy Cashman, Tom McGuckian, Frank Savage, Gary Doyle & Dave Jordan & not forgetting to mention Anthony & the service crew, the lads will commence at Mizen Head, First day takes them to Charleville, so they wont even have left Cork having cycling over quarter of the journey 167KM. Friday 28th - Day two takes them to Athlone 162KM, Saturday 29th Day 3 Athlone to Ballybofey 184KM. Leaving them the last 100KM to Malin Head Sunday morning where they will be glad to experience westerly sea breezes. We wish them all the very best of luck. Go n-éirí an bóthar leat

In The Community 

Finally a few Community notices.

* On this Wednesday 26th August, Ballintotis Area Community Council will host an Open Evening in the Community Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm to showcase classes, events and activities taking place during the autumn/winter season. There will also be presentations to Special Olympic local heroes Martin Condon and Leo Napier. Light refreshments will be served - Please join us.

*The third leg of the inter parish local Camino Walk in our area will take place on Saturday September 5th and will begin with 10am Mass in Castlemartyr. The walk will then proceed via Ballyoughtera to Ballintotis Church for concluding prayer followed by a cuppa' in the Community Centre. Pilgrims are asked to walk as a group via the Resort to Mitchell’s Woods entrance.
