Killeagh GAA Club Notes August 23rd 2026
CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Lúnasa 23, 2026
GO RAIBH MAITH AGAIBH!
Saturday evening August 22nd saw the sun shining on Páirc Uí Chinnéide as it was transformed from the “field of dreams” to a “music mecca” as the excellent Generation Rewind and the dynamic Bog The Donkey took to the stage to wow the enthusiastic crowd at our inaugural music fundraiser. A great community atmosphere prevailed as all ages danced and sang along into the night. The thank you list could be as long as any Mayo All-Ireland captain’s speech, so we will limit it to say a “míle buíochas” to all the volunteers who helped to make it a success in the before, during and after phase, to our visionary chairman Brian Barry who ensured that a dream became a reality, and to all those who bought tickets and hopefully left with happy memories on this historic evening. We will be back in 2027 – bigger and better no doubt – with just the date and the stars to be confirmed. Rumours of the Club President heading to EP next weekend might just be true after all!! And not just to spy on absent hurlers and footballers! Watch this space!
Cluichí agus cluichí!
It’s been a busy fortnight, again! Ar aghaidh linn!
O’CONNOR MOTOR FACTORS EAST CORK JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Saturday August 15th in Ballynoe Glenbower Rovers 2-12, Bride Rovers 1-06
Two from two in our Junior B football championship, and yet we are not guaranteed progression to the semi-finals, as the other teams in our group, Ballinacurra and Cobh, can still overtake us, depending on results in Round 3. Nonetheless, given the unavailability of players for this fixture, we will take the win and move on. This was almost a carbon copy of our opening fixture against Glenville, where we struggled with fluency and scoring with the wind in the opening half, before blitzing our opponents with a ten-minute scoring spree after the half-time whistle. It took us 14 minutes to get our opening score from Paudie Mackey after a succession of wides, dropped shots and good goalkeeping saw us scoreless until then. Thereafter, George Walsh sallied up from centre back to kick two points, while Paudie added another and young Cathal Brennan showed his class with the final point of the half. Bride Rovers had only managed two points of their own, while the wide count was 9-1 by half time. In the opening round fixture against Glenville, we goaled within 18 seconds of the restart; this time it took us a slightly longer 24 seconds, after Robbie Treacy’s throw-in possession and a quick move upfield finished with Cathal Brennan getting the final touch for the green flag. George, Robbie, Paudie and Sean Walsh all pointed to put us 1-09 to 0-02 ahead by 40 minutes, before Bride Rovers goaled from a penalty. Cúl báire Bryan McCarthy, showing his usual composure, was the proverbial ‘safe pair of hands’ throughout the match, with excellent distribution from kick-outs, but he was unable to prevent this goal. However, within three minutes, Robbie Treacy scored an excellent goal, charging through the middle, while Jamie Fogarty (2) and Richie Long finished our scoring by the 52nd minute. Bride Rovers never threw in the towel, and they scored the final three points, but by that stage we had the job done. Well done to all, particularly to Ciaran and Colm Leahy, both outstanding in defence, and to George, Jamie and Robbie for their ‘total football’ at both ends and in the middle of the pitch. One match left – against Castlelyons on Saturday September 12th at 1700 hrs in Ballynoe once again.
Team: Bryan McCarthy, Colm Leahy, Ciaran Leahy, Jack Coleman, Fionn Brennan, Geroge Walsh, Jamie Fogarty, Dara Motherway, Robbie Treacy, Eoin Brenner, Brendan Delaney, Sean Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Richie Long, Cathal Brennan.
O’CONNOR MOTOR FACTORS EAST CORK JUNIOR C FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 16th in Killeagh Glenbower Rovers 3-04, Youghal 3-14
For those inclined to a little flutter, put 50 cent on a Youghal football double in 2026! Their Junior A team looked very impressive on the previous Friday evening when comprehensively beating St. Catherine’s in Killeagh, while their Junior C team looked like they could comfortably play at a higher standard in defeating our second team on Sunday morning last. Our team battled bravely throughout, but there was an obvious gap in standards, with Youghal leading by 2-07 to 0-03 at half time. Kieran Lane, Dave Ogbebor and Manus Darby were our scorers, while Manus added our fourth point on 37 minutes. Then we saw the best cameo of the year, with Dave Ogbebor scoring three goals in a crazy six-minute period. The opening goal on 41 minutes came from great work by Ian O’Keeffe; he then converted a penalty after being fouled himself, and added his third on 47 minutes, with Dermot Motherway assisting this time. Dave had the ball in the net for the fourth time on 58 minutes, but this one was disallowed. We limited Youghal to 1-07 in the second half, which was encouraging given the youthful profile of their team, some of whom will surely feature in their A team in the coming weeks. Our round-robin campaign has come to an end now, as we await the results in all Round 3 games before we can ascertain whether or not we qualify for a semi-final. Well done to all.
Team: Colm Crowley, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Ben Budds, Adrian Galvin, Conor Meade, Paul Keniry, Ian O’Keeffe, Kieran Lane, Manus Darby, Darragh O’Connor, Lee Cooney, Dave Ogbebor, Dermot Motherway, Stephen Murphy, Diarmuid Buckley, Dylan Coleman, Danny Fitzgerald.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Friday August 21st in Aghavine Youghal 1-17, Killeagh 0-18
The BC (Before Concert) action concluded on Friday evening last in Aghavine, where the pitch was once again in pristine condition, with reiteoir Chris Scanlon i bhfeighil an tí. Aidan Morrison, Brian Murphy and Conor Burns were all unavailable from the previous victory over Aghada, with Darren Cusack, Conor Meade, Killian Treacy and Dara Motherway all starting. Fresh from his Leaving Certificate results, Jack Coleman got the opening point in the first minute. Great credit is due to our pair, Jack and Tadhg, and the Youghal players who showed real commitment by turning out for their clubs before, or in lieu of, their LC celebrations. Ask not what your club can do for you …… Anyway, back to the match. Youghal were off target in the opening minutes, with four early wides, while Aaron Walsh and Dan Walsh added to our total. Youghal gradually got their radar working, and by the 18th minute they led by 0-05 to 0-04, Aaron scoring our fourth point from a free. Dan Smiddy, hardworking throughout, then hit two excellent long-range points on the 19th and 21st minutes to tie the game at 0-06 each. Youghal added four more points by half-time while we added a second free from Aaron and a quick-fire brace, also from distance, from Dara Motherway. 0-10 to 0-09 to Youghal ag leath am. Two points from Aaron (from play and from a free) saw us lead by 0-11 to 0-10 by the 36th minute, and our defence was on top at this stage, with Pierce Geary, Tadhg Considine and Jack O’Rouke very prominent. Paudie Mackey, held in the full-forward line up to this point, came out to the middle third and made an immediate impact, with two points in the 44th and 50th minute, while Aaron struck three frees over from distance. A spectacular double rainbow, a heavy shower, and fading light made the final twenty minutes very dramatic, with the lead never more than one point for either side until injury time, when Youghal goaled to put them two ahead (1-17 to 0-18). Youghal had found their crock of gold! A late chance for Killeagh to goal was forfeited when a close-in free was overturned, and the light and the clock beat us in the end. A tough loss, given that we played well against a strong Youghal team. We play Bride Rovers on Sunday September 6th at 1930 hrs in Dungourney, where all will be on the line.
Team: Darren Cusack, Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Tadhg Considine, Jack Coleman, Brian Collins, Jack O’Rourke, Dara Motherway, Dan Smiddy, Dan Walsh, Kieran Lane, Davy Kelleher, Aaron Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Killian Treacy, Luke Fogarty.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR C HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 23rd in Killeagh Killeagh 5-12, Cobh 1-17
If the Junior B team held the accolade for “Win of the Week” in Round 1, then that title passed definitively to our Junior C All Stars (highest-scoring team of the weekend) on PC (Post Concert) morning, August 23rd. The pre-match warm-up of attending the festivities on the previous evening certainly did no harm to the relaxed Junior C quartet spotted enjoying themselves in the twilight (Club Orange, if you’re wondering, while some had to do some overtime quality control testing in Club Aras in Youghal on Sunday evening). This was the classic “goals win games” affair, with our opening two coming courtesy of Darragh O’Connor on 11 minutes and Shane Kearney on 16 minutes. Ciaran O’Rourke was the official “assist” for both, with Jack Merkushev also involved in the lead up to the opening goal, and Ben Budds equally central to the second. Padraic Carroll’s three points – two from frees and one from play – added to the pair of green flags, saw us 2-03 to 0-03 ahead at this stage. Cobh raised their only green flag on 20 minutes, but points from Ben Budds, Jack Merkushev and Diarmuid Buckley, all of whom were excellent throughout, saw us lead by 2-06 to 1-08 at Joe Coppinger’s half time whistle. Diarmuid added his second after the break while Padraic added three more frees by the 51st minute. Crucially, we added another pair of quick-fire goals on 39 and 41 minutes, the first from Ciaran O’Rourke, with Darragh O’Connor this time returning the first half favour to assist, and then Dave Ogbebor scoring his trademark goal with a mazy run from deep to push us ahead by 4-08 to 1-12. Cobh were not done, and by the 47th minute had reduced the margin to two – 4-08 to 1-15. A strong finish saw us score 1-04 in the final twelve minutes, with Ciaran getting his second goal from a penalty after Danny Fitzgerald had been fouled when about to shoot. Cobh could only add two points in this period, with Colm Crowley’s save on 59 minutes keeping the margin at a safe seven. This was an outstanding team performance with Stephen Murphy and Ian O’Keeffe in defence and Ian Cooney at wing forward very impressive, along with the aforementioned others. We play Erins Own on Monday September 7th in Killeagh at 2000 hrs, where a victory should ensure progression to a quarter-final. Well done to the panel of 23, and to the management team on the sideline and on the pitch. Team of the Year? If we take a broad view of how we measure success, undoubtedly!
Team: Colm Crowley, Dan Lucey, Paul Keniry, Stephen Murphy, Brendan Keniry, Ben Budds, Ian O’Keeffe, Jack Merkushev, Dave Ogbebor, Diarmuid Buckley, Padraic Carroll, Lee Cooney, Shane Kearney, Ciaran O’Rourke, Darragh O’Connor, Dale McMahon, Danny Fitzgerald, Cullen Ryan Hyde.
CO-OP SUPERSTORES SENIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 23rd in Castlemartyr Erins Own 2-15, Killeagh 0-15
A touch of the curate’s egg about this one in sun-soaked Paddy Walsh Memorial Park in Baile na Martra on Sunday afternoon. As an aside, well done to our neighbours in Castlemartyr and Youghal on Sunday, and in Fr. O’Neills on Friday evening, for excelling at their event management for our championship matches. Your work and welcome to our teams and supporters is greatly appreciated. A strong opening 40 minutes, where we limited our opponents to just 1-06, was undone by an under-par closing 20, where Erins Own outscored us by 1-09 to 0-04, and showed why they will be one of the favourites for this championship when the knockout stages commence. We had seven different scorers in the opening half, with Ben Walsh opening the scoring on 6 minutes. Scores were hard won in the opening 20. Barry Walsh on 10 and Shane Smiddy on 13 saw us lead by 0-03 to 0-02, before Jamie Fogarty, our best performer on the day, hit a monster point from downtown on 19 minutes. Erins Own then scored their first goal after 20 minutes to put them ahead by 1-04 to 0-04. Our final 10 minutes of the first half and the first ten of the second were our most dominant, with Barry, Andy Walsh, Ryan McCarthy (resulting from a great save by Fionn Murphy at the other end) and Evan Lane all scoring before Jimmy Smiddy’s half-time call, and two frees from Barry and an Eoghan Keniry point pushing us into a two point lead by the 38th minute – 0-11 to 1-06. From here to the finish, however, Erins Own asserted their superiority, with their defence taking control and their forwards improving their conversion rate. A goal on 46 minutes came just a minute after they had had a goal disallowed, and this pushed them into a four point lead – 2-10 to 0-12. We were limited to one point from Ryan and three from Barry (two frees), although David Buckley was very unlucky that his great run at goal and subsequent shot was denied by the post, and Barry’s powerful shot on 50 minutes was just inches over, rather than under, the crossbar. So on we go to our final game against Na Piarsaigh in Midleton on Saturday September 5th at 1730 hrs, where we must win to progress, whereas a draw will suffice for the northsiders. Nothing like a bit of jeopardy to sort things out. One small consolation – Na Piarsaigh’s comprehensive victory over Fermoy on Saturday ensures that the worst position we can finish in our group is third, thereby avoiding any reference to the dreaded “Slán Leat” final for 2026! No “Slán Leat” for any of our adult hurling teams, thankfully, all of whom have now won at least one game.
Team: Fionn Murphy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Jamie Fogarty, Sean Long, Ben Walsh, Brendan Delaney, Andy Walsh, Rob Sinclair, Evan Lane, George Walsh, Barry Walsh, Dinny Walsh, Eoghan Keniry, Ryan McCarthy, Shane Smiddy, Dave Buckley, Dylan Hogan, Fionn Brennan, Pa O’Brien.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 23rd in Youghal Killeagh 2-17, Midleton 0-13
The final instalment of the Super Stamina Sunday trilogy saw us head east from Castlemartyr to Youghal for the second round Junior A Hurling Championship match against Midleton’s third team, who had lost to Carraig na bhFear in the opening round. George Walsh, Dave Buckley and Dylan Hogan (promoted to the Senior A team), and Matthew Murphy (injured) were all unavailable from the opening round victory, so starting places were allocated to Oran Cunnigham, Jack Coleman and Sean Meade, who was making a welcome return after a long absence due to injury. We took a while to settle (trailing by 0-05 to 0-04 at the quarter hour mark), before Colm Leahy scored a brilliant individual goal on 20 minutes. Our minors Cormac Deane, Ben Geary and Andrew Brenner continued their good form from the St. Ita’s match, while Cian O’Riordan, Ciaran Leahy and Robbie Treacy were very prominent in defence. Two of the ‘older’ brigade, Sean Walsh and Andrew Leahy, also stood out, showing their class all through. We were then treated to the ‘Goal of the Month’ on 26 minutes when John Ogbebor finished a scintillating team move involving Andrew Leahy, Richie Long and Cormac Deane. By half-time our lead was 2-07 to 0-07, (Ben Geary, Andrew Leahy, Sean Walsh and Cormac Deane all raising white flags), and we held that gap through the second half, with Cormac Deane (4), Ben Geary (4) and busy substitutes Dara Motherway and Paudie Mackey all adding to our stockpile. Two impressive wins, with qualification now assured for the knockout stages in advance of our encounter with Carraig na bhFear on Friday September 4th, venue to be confirmed.
Team: Philip O’Neill, Oran Cunningham, Robbie Treacy, Jack Coleman, Andrew Brenner, Ciaran Leahy, Cian O’Riordan, Sean Walsh, John Ogbebor, Andrew Leahy, Cormac Deane, Richie Long, Sean Meade, Colm Leahy, Ben Geary, Cathal Brennan, Dara Motherway, Paudie Mackey.

Wednesday August 19th in Killeagh Killeagh 3-10, St. Finbarr’s 1-15
P2 Minor Hurling Championship R1 – Killeagh 3-10 St.Finbarr’s 1-15
St.Finbarr’s were the visitors for our final group game; both teams had already qualified, the winners would progress directly into the semi-final of the championship.
The Barrs set up with a sweeper, which frustrated us for long spells. They settled quicker and led by 1-4 to 0-2 after 18 minutes, our scores coming from Ben and Andrew. Only some great defending from Rian, Patrick, Adam, Dillon and Eolann stopped a couple of further goal opportunities. We got a boost in the 19th minute when Ben struck a great goal from a 21 yard free which was quickly followed by a point each by Alex Fogarty and Ben. The Barrs struck the last 3 scores of the first half to go in leading by 1-7 to 1-4.
We got the first score of the second half from John Farquhar before 3 in a row for the Barrs. Ruben O’Riordan (who had a huge impact off the bench) replied with a great point. Another pointed free from Ben was replied to by the Barrs. A switch of positions between Alex & Cormac improved matters. A clever pass by Cormac saw Ben evade the full back before finishing to the net with 10 remaining. Three further Barrs points were followed by another great solo effort from Ruben. Charlie Lawton came on and won some great ball at midfield. The Barrs struck the next 2 points which Ben replied to from 2 more placed balls after good work from Jay and Jack. We seemed to be drifting out of the game. The ref indicated that there were 3 minutes added, the Barrs led by 2 with time almost up. Jack Farquhar won a free near the sideline but some indiscipline by a Barrs mentor proved very costly as the ball was brought in front of the goals on the 21. From the last play Ben struck a great shot to the net to claim the win. Incredibly, it was the only time we led, and the ref blew the full-time whistle. It was not our best performance, but it was a huge test of character. Great performances by Eolann, Rian, Cathal (all through), Alex, Andrew, Cormac, Ben, Ruben and Charlie saw us edge a hugely exciting game.
Next up is a playoff in the P2 Minor football championship versus St. Colum’s, on Wednesday, 26th August in Ballincollig at 1900 hrs. If we win, advance to the semi-final. Please come and show your support for this exciting team.
