CO-OP SUPERSTORES SENIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Saturday August 1st in Lisgoold Killeagh 1-19, Fermoy 1-16
An almost identical scoreline to the historic Mayo win six days earlier (one point less on each side) and almost as important a victory for the green and white as it was for the green and red! We won’t be spending the next fifty years reflecting back on this one though, unlike the Kobe disciples. Still, a win is a win is a win, and having fallen to Fermoy in August 2025, it was heartening to get our 2026 campaign off to a winning start with a good performance and two points in the bank ag deireadh an lae. As was so often the case during our challenging league campaign, Evan Lane led from the start, opening the scoring after just 20 seconds, while Barry Walsh and Eoghan Keniry, two of our stars on the night, pointed within the opening seven minutes to put us ahead by 0-03 to 0-01. Our best spell in the opening half saw us score six points in the next quarter hour, all bar one from play, with a brace each from Barry and Dylan McCarthy, and one more each from Evan and Eoghan. Fermoy’s radar was off, as they had tallied seven wides by half time, but they scored three unanswered points to reduce the margin to a green flag – 0-09 to 0-06 – on Mark Maher’s half time whistle. When they scored three more without reply in the opening four minutes, it looked ominous, but Ryan McCarthy’s point on 35 minutes, which restored our lead and ended a 14 minute barren spell, was crucial. By the three quarter mark it was 0-13 to 0-10 (points from Dylan, Eoghan and hard-working Rob Sinclair) when a brilliant move involving hurley-less Ryan, Dylan and Barry ended with Barry blasting to the net from 25 metres out on the right-hand side. A goal of beauty if ever there was one! Two further points from Ben Walsh and Ryan left us five ahead (1-15 to 0-12) with ten minutes to go, the same as Mayo’s lead over Kerry the previous Sunday. Surely we would survive from here? Not without a major fight back from Fermoy, who scored their own goal on 52 minutes and pressed all the way. Critically, we never let the margin drop below three, and we held on with late scores from Dylan (two frees), Evan and Barry, combined with excellent defensive work throughout from all, especially Jamie Fogarty, Andy Walsh and Sean Long. Well done to all 18 players and to our management team, we now move on to play championship favourites Erins Own in Midleton on Super Sunday August 23rd at 1400 hrs. We’re off the mark!
Team: Fionn Murphy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Jamie Fogarty, Sean Long, Ben Walsh, Brendan Delaney, Andy Walsh, Rob Sinclair, Evan Lane, Barry Walsh, Pa O’Brien, Dinny Walsh, Eoghan Keniry, Ryan McCarthy, Dylan McCarthy, Shane Smiddy, Fionn Brennan, Darragh O’Brien.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 2nd in Shanagarry Killeagh 5-24, St. Ita’s 2-17
While we haven’t crossed paths with St. Ita’s in the past few seasons in Junior A championship, they had held the upper hand over our second string in the most recent iterations of this pairing. When our third string played Ita’s in Division 2 of the East Cork League in Pilmore in May, we lost by 3-14 to 0-07, but none of our team lining out for this opening championship match had been involved then. So this felt like somewhat of a changing of the guard, with our predominantly young team – featuring four minors and three others from last year’s minor team – having too much pace and firepower for a hardworking and committed St. Ita’s team who battled right to the end. Seventeen year old Ben Geary, the youngest player on the pitch, took just 20 seconds to announce his arrival on the adult hurling stage, with an excellent opening point, and he added a goal on 9 minutes to put Killeagh 1-03 to 0-04 ahead, adding to points from Andrew Leahy and David Buckley. David’s goal on 18 minutes put us ahead by 2-06 to 0-08 but Ita’s replied instantly with a goal of their own and went ahead by 1-10 to 2-06 when Seamie Harnedy, who showed his “class is permanent” credentials all through, pointed once again. Critically, just a minute earlier, Philip O’Neill made an excellent save, and once Sean Walsh equalised on 23 minutes and Colm Leahy fired over a quick double, we never relinquished our lead from there on. Cormac Deane and Richie Long added their names to the scoresheet, while in defence, George Walsh Wallace, Matthew Murphy and Cian O’Riordan were very effective. 2-12 to 1-11 ag leath am, agus bhí an ghaoth linn don dara leath. David Buckley’s second, and our third, goal just after half time widened the gap, while Andrew Brenner, excellent all through, added a fine point. Ben Geary’s second goal on 40 minutes saw us lead by 4-16 to 1-13, but Ita’s kept battling and reduced the margin with Seamie Harnedy’s clinical finish on 51 minutes – 4-18 to 2-16. However, Andrew Leahy showed his class with some excellent long-range scores from the left wing, while Sean Walsh did the same on the right, and David Buckley’s third goal was the icing on the cake on 58 minutes. We play Midleton on Super Sunday August 23rd at 1930 hrs in Youghal and conclude the group stages against Carraig na bhFear on Friday September 4th at 2000 hrs in Dungourney. Lean ar aghaidh lads!
Team: Philip O’Neill, Robbie Treacy, George Walsh Wallace, Ciaran Leahy, Cian O’Riordan, Matthew Murphy, Andrew Brenner, Cormac Deane, Sean Walsh, John Ogbebor, Andrew Leahy, Richie Long, David Buckley, Colm Leahy, Ben Geary, Dylan Hogan, Oran Cunningham, Cathal Brennan.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Saturday August 8th in Aghavine Killeagh 2-18, Aghada 3-13
Game of the week, maybe of the year, in sun-kissed Aghavine on a balmy Saturday evening. Where else would you want to be? Despite giving Aghada a one-goal advantage within 40 seconds, and being behind by 10 points just after half time, our battling Bs resurrected themselves to claim a thrilling victory in the final stretch. The wind was obviously a huge factor, as Aghada led by 3-08 to 0-08 at half time, but they only added five further points to their tally sa dara leath while we scored 2-10 in the same time. They will ultimately rue their wide count of 16 (we had 13 of our own), but this shows how exciting the game was from start to finish. We trailed by 1-07 to 0-04 at the quarter hour, before two further goals from Aghada left us behind by 3-07 to 0-07 at 25 minutes. Dan Walsh (2) and Paudie Mackey were our only scorers from play at this point, with Aaron Walsh striking over four frees of varying distance and challenge. Aghada extended the lead to 10 (3-09 to 0-08) in the opening minute of the second half but didn’t score again until the 40th minute, and again after that until the 53rd minute. Our defence started to get on top, with Jack O’Rourke, Conor Meade and Brian Collins particularly impressive. Meanwhile, our forwards started to keep the scoreboard operator busy, with Davy Kelleher and a Paudie Mackey brace supporting a trio of frees from Aaron Walsh to leave us behind by five – 3-10 to 0-14 on 47 minutes. Then Paudie AKA “Pele with a hurley” (thanks Donie!) performed his first bit of magic with a brilliant goal, before two frees from Aaron left two points in it (3-12 to 1-16) with just four minutes remaining. Then some real clutch hurling, with Paudie and Aaron scoring brilliant points in quick succession to level things up, before Paudie Pele did his magic again. This time he was provider, winning the ball and setting up Luke Fogarty for the all-important goal just on the 60th minute, which gave us the lead for the first and only time, but crucially, the one that matters. Luke had some work to do after gathering the cross-field pass, but he kept his cool to finish calmly and expertly. Aghada pulled back one point but our defence held firm under some late pressure to help us claim the points on referee Anthony O’Regan’s final whistle. Hard to match it! We return to Aghavine on Friday 21st at 1930 hrs to take on Youghal, who drew with Bride Rovers in Round 1.
Team: Brian Murphy, Conor Burns, Aidan Morrison, Tadhg Considine, Dan Smiddy, Brian Collins, Jack O’Rourke, Pierse Geary, Jack Coleman, Dan Walsh, Kieran Lane, Davy Kelleher, Aaron Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Eoin Brenner, Conor Meade, Luke Fogarty, Michael O’Donovan.
EAST CORK OIL EAST CORK JUNIOR C HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday August 9th in Riverstown Sarsfields 0-26, Killeagh 0-20
To misquote a certain Mr. M. Loaf of a certain era, “three out of four ain’t bad”! We couldn’t quite get the clean sweep of victories to seal the deal on our first round of matches, but this was a very combative performance by our fourth team, punching above our weight against the fourth team of the mighty Sars i bPáirc Tadhg Mhic Cárthaigh, Baile Róisín. With young Padraic Carroll (just starting his 44th year) shooting the lights out in an amazing first-half performance (9 points from 10 shots), we trailed by two at half time, Diarmuid Buckley adding our other score. Brendan Keniry, Ben Budds and Tadhg O’Connor were to the fore in the defence, while Colm Crowley sa chúl made no fewer than four brilliant saves to keep his sheet clean. The second half saw us turn to play with the wind, but every time we reduced the margin, Sarsfields pushed on to keep us at bay. Diarmuid Buckley and Jack Merkushev both added a pair of points each in the opening ten minutes to reduce the gap to just two (0-16 to 0-14), but that was as close as we got. Padraic added four more points, Ben Budds struck a free from downtown, and Dave Ogbebor finished a great run with a point, but we were unable to find a way past the Sars defence and their excellent goalkeeper to raise the green flag we needed. No shame in losing this one though! Well done lads, great effort. We go again on Super Sunday August 23rd when we welcome Cobh at 1100 hrs. Clear the diary for that day! You might as well have the dinner for breakfast!
Team: Colm Crowley, Paul Keniry, Tadhg O’Connor, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Brendan Keniry, Ben Budds, Ian O’Keeffe, Jack Merkushev, Dale McMahon, Diarmuid Buckley, Padraic Carroll, Lee Cooney, Dermot Motherway, Ciaran O’Rourke, Darragh O’Connor, Stephen Murphy, Eoin Roche, Shane Kearney, Dylan Coleman, Dave Ogbebor, Dan Lucey, Ian Landers.
Note: After our four first round games, we have used a total of 76 players, and at least four other players have yet to feature, along with seven Under 18s who can still play with any of the Junior teams. Some going.
On to our minor reports from bainisteoir Ger Geary.
REBEL ÓG PREMIER 2 MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2
Wednesday July 29th in Kealkil St. Colum’s 3-07, Killeagh 0-15
We made the long trek west to Kealkil to face St. Colum’s in the second round of the Premier 2 Minor Football championship. Colum’s were quick out of the blocks and kicked the first 3 points. We settled, and 4 points in a row from Andrew and Ben saw us a point up after 19 minutes. Colum’s added a point before an excellent effort from Sean was followed by a good team score finished by Cathal. Colum’s hit us for 1-1 in first half injury time to see them lead by 2 at the short whistle.
Colum’s started the second half on the front foot and clipped 2 points to lead by 4 after 35 minutes. The lads played excellent football to rattle off the next 8 points in a row, 2 each from Cathal, Andrew, and Ben, with Ruben and Cormac Deane also contributing. We were caught with sucker punch of a goal before Ruben burst through for an excellent point. We were 2 up heading into injury time when Colum’s struck for a late goal to claim the win.
This was a really good team performance. Our shooting left us down on occasion and we conceded a couple of poor goals, but the lads worked incredibly hard. The defence tackled well with Rian, Patrick and Ryan outstanding. Andrew continued his excellent form with some great scores, Cathal had 3 great points. Up front Cormac led from 11 and was everywhere, with great work from Jack, Cormac Delaney and Sean. Ruben and Ben were always dangerous and kicked some great scores inside.
We have Donoughmore at home in our last football group game on Wednesday next August 12th, where a win would see us qualify for a playoff, at a minimum.
Team: Seanan McDonnell, Alex Howey, Rian O’Connor, Ronan O’Riordan, John Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Ryan Murphy, Cathal Brennan (0-3), Andrew Brenner (0-4), Jack Farquhar, Cormac Deane (0-1), Cormac Delaney, Ruben O’Riordan (0-2), Ben Geary (0-4), Sean O’Leary (0-1) Subs: Billy Guerin, Oscar Power, Charlie Lawton, Kerry Asibor.
REBEL ÓG PREMIER 2 MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2
Wednesday August 5th in Newtownshandrum Shandrum 2-16, Killeagh 1-22
For the second week in a row we were on the road, this time to Newtownshandrum for Round 2 of the hurling championship. This turned out to be an epic battle for the entire 60 minutes. Shandrum got a great start with a goal on 35 seconds. We settled with 2 points from Ben. It was very physical around the middle third. It was nip and tuck for the rest of the first half. Further scores from Billy, Alex Fogarty, Alex Howey and Ben (6) saw us lead by 0-11 to 1-7 at half time.
Andrew scored an excellent point from the throw-in before Shandrum struck for 1-2 in 2 minutes. Cormac Delaney scored a nice point. Ben continued to punish every foul from dead balls. Shandrum battled hard. Ben then struck for a superb goal, but Shandrum continued to apply pressure. On 50 minutes Shandrum were reduced to 14. 3 further points in a row by Ben saw us get over the line by 3 at the full-time whistle.
This was a really good team performance in a tough championship battle on the road. Eolann was rock solid in goals. Rian, Dillon and Cathal stood firm. Cormac was outstanding throughout with impeccable reading of the play and superb delivery. Andrew was excellent at midfield with his driving runs causing huge problems. There was great work by Billy, Jack and Alex. Ben was in serious scoring form, both from play and placed balls. We got a positive impact off the bench. This result means we have qualified for the knockout phase. Our next hurling match is against St. Finbarr’s at home on Wednesday 19th at 1900 hrs to decide who tops the group.
Team: Eolann Deane, Patrick Dineen, Rian O’Connor, Adam Barry, Dillon McCarthy, Cormac Deane, Cathal Brennan, Andrew Brenner (0-1), Alex Howey (0-1), Sean O’Leary, Alex Fogarty (0-1), Ronan O’Riordan, Jack Farquhar, Ben Geary (1-17, 0-11f), Billy Guerin (0-1) Subs: Cormac Delaney (0-1), Ruben O’Riordan, Charlie Lawton, Cathal Murphy, Eoghan Murphy, Oisin Conlon, Oscar Power.
