Junior D Footballers Show Great Spirit to Earn Championship Draw

Glenville's third adult football team produced a superb display of determination and resilience on Friday night as they opened their East Cork Junior D Football Championship campaign with a deserved 1-10 to 1-10 draw against Ballinacurra in Glenville.

With both the Premier Junior and Junior B teams having already begun their championship campaigns the previous weekend, it was particularly encouraging to see 17 players togged out to represent Glenville in adult championship football. The match perfectly highlighted the importance of Junior D football, providing opportunities for younger players to experience championship action, welcoming back players returning after lengthy absences, and rewarding those who continue to give their commitment to the club year after year.

Glenville made an excellent start, with the returning Rob McKenna making an immediate impact at midfield. Winning the throw-in, he set up the opening score before continuing to dominate around the middle of the field with strong running and intelligent link play throughout the opening half. It was an evenly contested first period, with both sides exchanging scores and little separating them.

A setback came midway through the half when Mike Murphy was forced off through injury, but Glenville were able to call upon another Mike Murphy, who slotted seamlessly into the defence and made an excellent contribution.

The second half was fiercely competitive and looked to be slipping away from Glenville when, with eight minutes remaining, a black card reduced them to 14 men while Ballinacurra held a two-point advantage. Matters became even more difficult when influential full-back Eamon Counihan was forced off with a hand injury, and Ballinacurra stretched their lead to three points.

However, Glenville refused to give in. Showing tremendous character, they battled relentlessly to win two late frees, both calmly converted by Davan O'Sullivan, before substitute Mossie Keane stepped up to fire over a dramatic injury-time equaliser and secure a share of the spoils.

Considering the circumstances, the draw felt like a victory and was a fitting reward for the commitment and determination shown by every player. It was a performance that embodied everything positive about Junior D football and demonstrated the strength of spirit that exists throughout the Glenville club.

The next round is expected to take place in a few weeks' time against Cobh, with the competition schedule adjusted following a late withdrawal.

Everyone at Glenville GAA wishes Mike Murphy and Eamon Counihan a speedy recovery, while also extending best wishes to the Ballinacurra player who sustained a shoulder injury during the game.

U15 Footballers Impress with Comprehensive Home Victory

Glenville 5-11, Youghal 2-10

Glenville's U15 footballers produced an outstanding team performance to record a deserved home victory over Youghal, leading from the opening whistle and never relinquishing control.

The hosts set the tone early with relentless work rate, strong running and some excellent score-taking, building a commanding lead through fast, attacking football. While the forwards caught the eye, it was the collective effort across the field that proved the foundation for the win.

Defensively, Glenville were exceptional from goalkeeper through to the full-forward line, with every player contributing to a disciplined and determined display. The substitutes also made a significant impact, maintaining the intensity and ensuring the high standard never dropped throughout the contest.

Congratulations to all the players and mentors on an excellent performance. Thanks also to Youghal for a sporting and competitive game. A word of thanks also to the referee for his excellent handling of the match, allowing the game to flow throughout.

Rebel Óg East Success for Glenville Trio

Congratulations to Ronan, Darragh and Luke, who were part of the Rebel Óg East squad that emerged victorious in the Bowl Competition at the prestigious Jim Power Tournament in Waterford on Saturday.

It was a fantastic achievement for the three Glenville players and a reward for their hard work and commitment throughout the season. Everyone in Glenville GAA is proud to see them representing both club and division with such distinction.

Congratulations also to their Rebel Óg East teammates and management on an excellent success. Well done to all involved


Glenville GAA Summer Skills Programme Returns This August


Glenville GAA is looking forward to welcoming boys and girls from across the community to its Summer Skills Programme, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday, August 10th and 11th, at the Glenville GAA Grounds.


Running each day from 10.00am to 2.00pm, the programme is open to children aged 5 to 13 years and promises two action-packed days of fun, learning and games in a friendly and inclusive environment.


Participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills across Football, Hurling, Camogie and Ladies Football, with sessions designed to cater for all ability levels. Whether your child is trying Gaelic games for the very first time or is already an active club player, the programme offers a fantastic opportunity to improve fundamental skills, build confidence, make new friends and enjoy being active during the summer holidays.


The emphasis throughout the two days will be on participation, teamwork and enjoyment, with experienced coaches and club volunteers ensuring that every child has a positive and rewarding experience. As well as improving their sporting skills, participants will enjoy plenty of games and activities in a fun, supportive atmosphere.


The Summer Skills Programme has proven hugely popular in previous years and is an excellent way for young players to stay active, meet friends and experience everything Glenville GAA has to offer. Parents are encouraged to register early, as places are expected to fill quickly.


Registration is now open through the club's KlubFunder platform, and everyone is welcome to take part. We look forward to seeing plenty of young footballers, hurlers and camogie players enjoying two great days in Glenville this August.


Sam Bracken Takes on 100km Challenge in Memory of His Mother


The Glenville community is coming together to support one of its own as Sam Bracken prepares to undertake an extraordinary fundraising challenge in memory of his late mother, Finola Bracken (née Halbert).


Many in Glenville GAA will remember Finola as a dedicated and highly valued club member who gave countless hours of voluntary service over many years. Among the many roles she fulfilled was that of Club Treasurer, carrying out her work with commitment, warmth and generosity. Her contribution to the club and the wider community left a lasting impression on all who knew her.


Finola tragically passed away suddenly in August 2024 while on Trá Lísepen Beach in West Cork. She is deeply missed by her husband Declan, children Lydia, Sam and Erica, her extended family, friends and the wider Glenville community.


Sam is well known within Glenville GAA, having proudly represented the club at Intermediate level for many years before relocating to the UK. Despite now living abroad, he continues to return home whenever possible to pull on the Glenville jersey and remains a popular and much-valued member of the club.


On Friday, August 7th, Sam will embark on a remarkable 100-kilometre run from Glenville to Trá Lísepen Beach, the place where his mother sadly passed away. Through this incredible challenge, he hopes to honour Finola's memory while raising vital funds for West Cork Rapid Response, an organisation that has become especially meaningful to the Bracken family.


The club is encouraging as many people as possible to support Sam's efforts, whether by making a donation, joining him for part of the route or simply coming out along the way to offer encouragement. Every contribution, every shared mile and every show of support will help motivate Sam as he takes on this demanding challenge.


Everyone in Glenville GAA wishes Sam the very best as he undertakes this inspiring tribute to his mother. The club has always taken great pride in supporting its members through good times and bad, and the Bracken family continue to hold a special place within the Glenville community. We have no doubt that Sam will make his mother proud as he completes this extraordinary journey.

Glenville GAA Lotto

There was no winner of the Glenville GAA Lotto jackpot in last Friday night's draw.

The numbers drawn were 1, 17, 25 and 29.
