BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.

 

NO TREATY SPLIT AS WEST’S ASLEEP.

Ah yes the Limerick ‘bear’ was really ‘poked’ when Dublin beat them last year. Last Sunday they showed that there’s no doubt but they are a brilliant team. Next Sunday the Boys from the County Mayo take on the Kingdom in the Football Final. After that it’s full steam ahead for the County Championships. We start with B Grade Football action on Saturday. The Cul Camp is on next week so it will be a really hectic few weeks to come.

 

LOOKING GOOD. Our pitch maintenance group continued their habit of reaching great heights looking down on us ordinary club members last week!. Led by Club Grounds Officer Denis Ahern, they painted the goalposts. This, along with other works, are being undertaken each week to maintain our grounds and ensure they are in top shape for upcoming County championship and our own games in the weeks ahead. Tom Mulcahy, well accustomed to having his head in the clouds, was joined by Seán Cronin, Mark O'Connell and James Murphy in undertaking the task. There were talks of installing Hawkeye, but a last minute workers-rights protest by an angry, flag-bearing Ray led to this being postponed indefinitely! Thanks also to the young Rovers lady footballers who painted the entrance walls to the pitch last week- ‘Mol an oige agus tiocfaidh siad.’

TOUGH OPENER FOR FOOTBALLERS. On this coming Saturday we are fixed to play our first Junior B Grade Football ‘Round Robin’ game.  We travel to Dungourney for a 7pm throw-in against Ballinacurra. This will be a tough opener so best of luck lads.

REBEL OG UNDER 16 FOOTBALL. Bride Rovers under16 footballers got their Division 1 Football Championship campaign off to the perfect start with an exciting victory over Kiltha Óg in Páirc na Bríde on Monday, July 13th. Played in glorious sunshine, the warm conditions made the scheduled water break a welcome opportunity for both teams to regroup. Kiltha Óg proved to be excellent opponents and contributed to a highly entertaining contest that kept supporters engaged from the opening throw-in to the final whistle.We made a strong start and established an early advantage through some excellent teamwork, disciplined defending and clinical finishing. However, Kiltha Óg showed tremendous determination and gradually worked their way back into the game, reducing the deficit as the match entered the closing stages. Both sides deserve huge credit for the intensity, commitment and never-say-die attitude they displayed throughout. Despite the late pressure, Bride Rovers showed great composure and resilience to see the game out, recording a deserved 4-08 to 1-15 victory. It was an excellent team performance and a very positive way to begin the championship campaign. A big thank you to all the players, mentors, volunteers and supporters who helped make it a great occasion in Páirc na Bríde. Attention now turns to Round 2, where Bride Rovers travel to Killeagh on Monday, August 10th, as the squad looks to build on this excellent opening championship victory.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM.

This past week saw a respite between the finishing of all the Leagues and the Championship start. From this weekend on it’s absolutely  fixture after fixture.  We have Fixtures coming for Junior B grade Football, Senior, Junior A , Junior B and Junior D hurling -as well as hosting games and Juvenile fixtures also. UNDER 16 PREMIER Hurling Championship – Round 2

Following an impressive opening-round victory over Ibane Gaels, Bride Rovers travelled to Church Road, Blackrock for Round 2 of the Premier Hurling Championship. With the holiday season in full swing, the management had the opportunity to utilise more of the squad, and every player who featured acquitted themselves extremely well. It was another valuable outing for the panel, with players stepping up and making strong contributions throughout. The game developed into a fiercely contested battle from the throw-in. Bride Rovers produced a determined performance and held the lead for much of the contest through disciplined defending, hard work around the middle third and some excellent scores. However, Blackrock continued to apply pressure and, in the final quarter, capitalised on their opportunities to edge in front before seeing the game out.

The final score saw Blackrock emerge victorious on a scoreline of 1-18 to 3-06, leaving Bride Rovers on the wrong side of a six-point defeat.

While the result was disappointing, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The commitment, work rate and character shown by the squad were evident throughout, and the experience gained by several players will stand to the group as the championship progresses. It was certainly a game that could have gone either way, and the team can take confidence from matching one of the competition's strongest sides for long periods. The result means our final group v Youghal game now becomes a must-win encounter as we look to secure progression in the championship.; Panel:

Our attention now turns to Round 3, where we welcome Youghal to Páirc na Bríde on Monday, August 3rd. With plenty still to play for, the squad will be working hard over the coming weeks as they prepare for another important championship test.

6 OUTTA 9 AINT BAD!  After defeats in the last two years some thought that maybe some cracks were appearing in the ‘Fortress Limerick Hurling Team’, well no such weaknesses were evident in Croke Park last Sunday. I’ve been to many Hurling Finals but seldom if ever was the inevitability of the result evident so early in the game. Limerick were just brilliant and are deserving champions. Winning in 2018, pipped by a point in 2019, then a four in a row and now champions again. From 1940 until 1973 they won nothing and from Eamonn Cregan’s ‘73 side they waited 45 years until the coming of John Kiely. Already they are talking of having the Liam Mcarthy Cup on the same Table as the Ryder Cup, in Adare, in September 2027! Truly they are a mighty team. Yes Galway are young but how oh how did that Galway side beat Cork

MEMORIES OF 1975. Sitting alongside me last Sunday in Croke Park was a Galway men. I asked him what was his Club? “ Cappataggle” he replied. I told him we had a Cappataggle native, John Byrnes, on our 1975 Junior B Gade Hurling East Cork winning side.  “He was my first cousin” Mike Kearns told me! It’s a small world surely.

WEEKLY CLUB LOTTO; The Lotto Results for Tuesday the 14th of July were as follows; Numbers drawn were  5, 7, 15 & 20 and there was No  Jackpot Winner. CONGRATS. Jack Kearney of Barnahash won €30 in the Club Lotto on Tuesday and then on Friday last had another momentous occasion.  Jack married  Niamh Keating  in Cahir and all in Bride Rovers wish Jack and Niamh every happiness and blessing in their married life. All in the Club also send best wishes to Jack’s father Larry for a speedy recovery.
 CAR BOOT SALE.  Last Sunday saw a huge crowd at the Rathcormac Car Boot ale again. The fine weather made conditions brilliant. Thanks to those who helped out on the day.

 

CUL CAMP NEARING. Our annual Cul Camp will be held next week- commencing on Monday and continuing each day until Friday July 31st. With over 200 participants registered it promises to be a brilliant week. The Juvenile Club are looking for volunteers for the week or part of it- to help with stewarding, car Parking etc. If you could help on any day please contact any Club Officer.

KERRY v MAYO.  Nest Sunday sees reigning champions Kerry take on Mayo in the All Ireland Football Final. Manager supreme Jack O Connor will pit his wits and his team against Andy Moran. David Clifford is the best footballer in the Country -no arguments. Young Kobe McDonnell is shaping up to be equally brilliant -what a pity he’s going ‘Down Under’ on an AFL contract in September.  Fair play to any footballer who has ambitions to make full-time living in Australia but McDonnell can light up even a dull league game in February with his magic.  We have plenty Kerry-men and Mayo-men in our midst so hopefully it will be a great game.

SYMPATHY. Our deepest sympathy to the Spillane family of Killeagh on the death of Sheila (nee Creedon) of Burgess House, Killeagh. A founder of the Killeagh Camogie Club Sheila served in every Officer-ship as well as being trainer, selector and ‘pitch cutter’- the Spillane family gave a field on their farm for the use of the Camogie Club. She was also an iconic figure in greyhound racing in Ireland for over 70 years. May she rest in peace.
