BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.
COUNTY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.
On a sizzling weekend our Senior Hurlers made it Two-in a-Row of Hurling League titles with a great win over Erin’s Own. With an Angelus Bell start time of 12 noon this RED FM Senior Hurling League Division 2 Final was played before a fine crowd -most of whom probably had never been at a Saturday Final at such an early hour! In fairness the starting time was agreed by both Clubs and was wise move in the present heatwave. We had gone through our league campaign with six wins, two draws, one walkover and one loss. That losing game was against Erins Own on Saturday May 30th in Pairc na Bride. In that game both sides notched 17 scores but Erins Own won by 3 14 to our 17 points. With a temperature in the mid to high 20’s on Saturday it was tough conditions for hurling. We were forced to lineout without Cillian Tobin and the injured Shane O Connor and Josh Ahern. When Nemo Rangers official Canice Walsh threw in the sliotar our lads got into their stride quickly. Early points from Brian Roche and two from Louie gave us a perfect start. Paddy O Flynn boomed over a point from distance before Erins Own got a point. Then Brian put Louie through for a great goal and we were 1 4 to a point ahead. There was no slacking and our defence was still under pressure as Erins own tried to get back int the game. Two great saves in succession by Cian prevented O Carroll from raising green flags. In fact of Erins own’s first half tally of 6 white flags five came from placed balls. IN the backline, at midfield and up front we had a savage work rate and great tackling. Adam scored our own point from a free and scores from Paddy and Davy were supplemented by a pair each from the Roches Louie and Brian. Eoin Roche marshalled a good defence and our halftime lead of 1 11 to 0 6 reflected the play. We played down to the road in that first half but against a slight and warm breeze. While there were no official ‘water breaks’ common sense prevailed and plenty uisce was constantly supplied. Cormac Barry increased our lead after the break before McDonnell got Erins Own second point from play. With Kieran, Conor and Cormac rock solid our forwards had a great supply. They hit four points in under three minutes- great points from Davy, Ronan, Louie and Paddy. I suppose all the time we were expecting a big offensive from Erins own but it never happened. All our lads showed great determination and found men in better positions all during the game. They played controlled hurling all through the game. We finished with a flurry of points from Adam, Brian, Cormac and Davy to win emphatically by 1 21 to 0 14. After the game Daniel Lane, Operations Manager with Cork County Board- and our former Club Runai, Daniel Lane presented the Gerard O Donovan Cup to our delighted joint captains Cian Hogan and Conleith Ryan. Conleith spoke and thanked the referee,, the Lisgoold Club and of course the Erins Own team. He praised our Backroom team of Liam (in absentia) Steve, Alan, Frank and Jamie and our Support crew of Devon,Darren, catherine, Declan, Fergus, Gearoid, Darragh, Shane, Finn, Matthew and Cathal and our generous Sponsors. During this 2026 SHL Div 2 campaign we scored a total of 8-172 and conceded 12-123. Though we defeated Erins Own in the Senior Co semi final in 2008 many Club stalwarts in Lisgoold last Saturday were recalling our 1973 loss in the East Cork Junior Final to Erins Own. A drawn game 6 14 to 7 11 the first day and we lost the replay by two points 4 10 to 2 14. Well done to our present panel on winning back to back League and the County Senior A championship, hopefully the best is yet to come.

THE GER O DONOVAN CUP; Ger played hurling and football with Bandon and St Brogan's College, Bandon, winning many honours in both jerseys. He won three Under 16 B Hurling County Medals, a Premier Minor Hurling County Medal, two West Cork U21 Hurling Medals and a Junior A Hurling County Medal in 1999. Ger also won a Minor A County Football Medal with Bandon. He played hurling with Cork from U14 up to Minor and won an All Ireland Minor Hurling Medal in 1998. Ger won County Medals with St. Brogan's College at Junior and Senior level and also three All Ireland Senior Hurling Vocational Medals with Cork. Sadly Ger was to play his last game for the Lily Whites against Carrigtwohill in July 2002. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2002 and went to his eternal reward on 30th December 2003 at the very young age of 23. The Cup was presented by the O'Donovan Family and Ger's beloved Bandon.
FLASHBACK TO 2025. In the 2025 SHL Div 3 Final in Riverstown it took extra time to defeat Newcestown on a scoreline of 1 29 to 3 16

JUNIOR HURLING. It was warm in the morning but even hotter at half 2 last Saturday when our Juniors played a challenge game. The Sixmilebridge (Club of Mike Liddane) Junior team were on a mini tour of Munster and after a good game defeated our lads by 4 22 to 3 14.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIV 3 FINAL. On Friday night July 3rd our Junior Football team contested the Division 3 East Cork league final. We travelled to Rostellan to play Aghada. We were due to play Aghada in the last round of the football league, but as both clubs were undefeated in the league, the East Cork Board allowed for league game to double up with the league final.
The sun was shining for the evening, but there was a significant breeze that was used effectively by Aghada. They went in at half-time leading 0.6 to 0.3, and they kept a lead throughout the second half, winning by 0.10 to 0.5.
Bride Rovers had 25 players togged out, which was a healthy sign as we look forward to the first round of the football championship, which will be played against Ballinacurra on July 25th (venue will be Dungourney). Last year we were relegated from Division 2, so regardless of the loss to Aghada, gaining promotion back to Division 2 is a success.

CUL CAMP NEARING. Our annual Cul Camp will be held at the end of July. With over 200 participants registered it promises to be a brilliant week, and we might have the Liam McCarthy or Sam Maguire Cups -or both! The Juvenile Club are looking for volunteers for the week or part of it- to help with stewarding, car Parking etc. If you could help on any day please contact any Club Officer.
CAR BOOT SALE DAY The car boot sale is on next Sunday July 19th, and all the usual help will be required. Contact Billy Finnnegan (a proud Galway man) if you can assist for an hour or two.
CONGRATS. Congratulations to Grange Football and Araglen Huling on winning their respective County Finals in the last two weeks. No County Final in Cork is easily won so well done to both Clubs. Grange beat fellow Avondhu side Abbey Rovers in the Final while last Sunday Araglen defeated Castlemagner in Castletownroche. Carnival week is always huge in Araglen but this will be even better with a County win to celebrate. Congrats also to Kilworth on their great Co Leagur victory against Aghabullogue.
BALLYHOOLEY IN CO. FINAL. Best wishes to Ballyhooley who contest the Cork County Junior A Hurling League Final this coming Saturday. Afte a great semi final win over Cobh Ballyhooley will be very confident meting Donoughmore in the Final in Ballinlough at 6pm. The winners are guaranteed a place in Division 7 of the County Hurling League for 2027. Go for it Ballyhooley.
