BRIDE ROVERS CLUB NOTES
Senior Hurlers in League Final
RED FM SHL Final
Our Senior Hurlers will contest the Div 2 league Final v Erin’s Own on next Saturday morning art 12 noon in Lisgoold, an unusual time for a game of this kind but it was by agreement of both clubs who had other issues at the more traditional times for a league Final. Both teams return to the top division of hurling in Cork County after a very successful league campaign. Following our promotion fro Div 3 last year beating Newcestown in the final it’s a great achievement to go back-to-back with promotion. A great league campaign with only one defeat to Saturday’s opponents. That was a good game of hurling played at Pairc na Bríde where Erins Own got two early goals, but we pegged them back to a three-point deficit but a late late goal for Erins Own saw them run out winners on a scoreline of 3.14 to 0.17. We will be missing a few players for this encounter but that has been the case all through the league and the boys have accounted for themselves very well Both teams will be anxious to put a trophy on the sideboard early in the year. Thrown in at the Lisgoold venue is 12 Noon and Canice Walsh Nemo Rangers is the referee. Best wishes to Liam and his management team.
JFL DIV 3 FINAL
On Friday night, our Junior Football team contested the Division 3 East Cork league final. We travelled to Rostellan to play Aghada. We were due to play Aghada in the last round of the football league, but as both clubs were undefeated in the league, the East Cork Board allowed for league game to double up with the league final.
The sun was shining for the evening, but there was a significant breeze that was used effectively by Aghada. They went in at half-time leading 0.6 to 0.3, and they kept a lead throughout the second half, winning by 0.10 to 0.5.
Bride Rovers had 25 players togged out, which was a healthy sign as we look forward to the first round of the football championship, which will be played against Ballinacurra on July 25th (venue will be Dungourney). Last year we were relegated from Division 2, so regardless of the loss to Aghada, gaining promotion back to Division 2 is a success.
The panel for the league final was: Ben Hogan, Ciarán O’Dowd, Jordan Mannix (captain), Ronan Barry, Gearóid O’Connell (0.1), Liam Collins, Sean Dowling, Darragh O’Sullivan, Adam Hynes, John O’Sullivan, Cillian O’Sullivan, Oran Kielty, Shane O’Dowd (0.2), Liam Forde, Ronan O’Riordan, Ryan O’Callaghan, Darragh O’Farrell, Murat Abdallah, John Buckley, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Seamus Ahern, Damien Buckley, Jake Tobin, Jacob Powell, Conor O’Riordan (0.2).
Team Management: James Bermingham, John O’Dowd, Mike Hogan.
Cork Minors All Ireland Champions
Congratulations to Michéal Walsh and selector Vincent Cronin and all the Cork Minor panel and management on a magnificent victory last Sunday in the All-Ireland Minor Football Final. Corks first victory at Minor since 2019 didn’t look possible for long stages of this game, but a superb closing twenty minutes saw Cork claim the Tom Markam Cup for the twelfth time. A great honour for Micheal and Vince and a reward for all the hard work put in over many months.
All Ireland Semi Final
Corks hopes of a third consecutive all Ireland Final appearance was shattered by Galway at Croke Park last Saturday. Galway were fully deserving winners of this semi-Final, completely out working Cork from start to finish. Having been just a point ahead at half time, it was Galway who took over, limiting Cork to just 5 points in the second half while Galway scored 1-14. They have given us some great days over the last few years. and will be back in contention again in 2027. Thanks to Eoin & Brian who have been on the panel all year.
After a titanic struggle Limerick return to the All-Ireland final again, after a terrific game against Clare, to set up a meeting with Galway on July 19th
P2 U16 Hurling Championship Opener
Bride Rovers 7-13 Ibane Gaels 1-15
Our Premier 2 Hurling Championship campaign got off to the perfect start on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Rathcormac, as our T1 team produced a superb all-round performance to record a well-deserved victory over Ibane Gaels.
From the very first whistle, the lads showed huge hunger, work rate and intensity. Every player bought into the team effort, chasing, hooking, blocking and supporting one another all over the pitch. It was a performance full of energy and commitment, with the team setting a high standard right from the opening exchanges.
Our goalkeeper Ciaran M was excellent throughout the game. His puck-outs were accurate and well-directed, giving us a great platform to build attacks from the back. Time and again, he found players in space and helped turn defence into attack with clever distribution.
In defence, the full-back line of Cathal O’B, Danny and Sean H were strong and composed whenever Ibane Gaels applied pressure. Danny, our captain on the day, led by example from the heart of the defence, showing great leadership, determination and calmness under pressure. He organised those around him well and helped set the tone for a very solid defensive display. Alongside him, Cathal O’B and Sean H stood up to every challenge, cleared their lines well and made sure the opposition forwards had to work hard for every opportunity.
The half-back line of Ollie, Cody and Nathan also delivered a huge performance. They read the game brilliantly, cutting out attacks, winning breaking ball and driving forward whenever the chance came. Their deliveries into the forwards were of a very high standard and helped create many of our scoring chances.
Around the middle of the field, Sean Finn and Ciaran O’D were outstanding. Both players covered a huge amount of ground, worked tirelessly for the team and linked defence and attack very well. They not only helped set up scores but also got on the scoresheet themselves, showing great leadership and composure in an important area of the pitch.
Our half-forward line of Cormac, Fionn L and Cathal Q worked extremely hard throughout. They battled for every ball, put pressure on the Ibane Gaels defence and showed great skill when chances came their way. Fionn L was especially sharp in front of goal, contributing an excellent 1-4, while the whole line played a big part in keeping our attacks moving.
Inside, the full-forward line of Liam, Fionn C and Jack O’Dowd were a constant threat. Every time the ball went in, they looked dangerous and caused real problems for the Ibane Gaels defence. Their movement, finishing and ability to take scores at important moments helped us build momentum and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Liam was in brilliant form, finishing with an impressive 2-5, while Fionn C struck for 2-0 and Jack O’Dowd added another well-taken goal.
A big feature of the performance was the team’s attitude from start to finish. Even when we were ahead, the lads kept working hard, kept supporting each other and kept playing with intensity. There was no let-up, and that desire to keep pushing on was very pleasing to see.
Our substitutes Alex, Jack O’Don and Dom all made strong contributions when introduced. They brought fresh energy, worked hard for the team and helped close out the game in impressive fashion. Alex also got on the scoresheet with a fine goal, showing the strength and depth in the panel.
Overall, this was a fantastic team performance and a great way to open the Championship. The scoreline reflected the quality of hurling played, but just as important was the effort, attitude and teamwork shown by every player involved. A special mention must go to captain Danny, who led the team superbly and helped drive the lads on from start to finish.
Our next T1 Hurling Championship game will be away to Blackrock on Friday 17th, which will be another big challenge for the lads. Before that, however, attention now turns to football, with our footballers making their Championship start at home to Kilta Óg next Monday 13th. We wish the football squad the very best of luck as they begin their campaign.
Our T2 Hurling team will also be in Championship action on Thursday 23rd against Sars, so there is plenty of hurling and football to look forward to over the coming weeks.
Scorers:Liam 2-5, Fionn L 1-4, Fionn C 2-0, Alex 1-0, Jack O’Dowd 1-0, Sean F 0-2, Ciaran O’D 0-1, Cody 0-1.P2 Hurling Championship Opener
