Golf Classic On Horizon

Our Annual Golf Classic is coming quickly on the horizon - July 15th to 17th are the red letter dates, with the timesheet looking busy across the week. We hope that this year's event will be another major success, as all proceeds will go directly to the construction of the club's new gymnasium.

Sponsors, guests and organisers gathered at Castlemartyr Golf Club recently for the traditional pre event photo call which was hosted by Alan, Barry and the team at Castlemartyr GC. We were delighted to have Avril Geary - chairperson of Imokilly GAA and Dick Fitzgerald as our special guests. Thank you for your continued support of our club...see attached picture

Thanks of course to all our sponsors for your continued support, your backing makes such a significant difference to the success of the event each year.

Special gratitude to Army Surplus Store Midleton, Whitewater Group, Kia Motorview, O'Donovan Transport, The Guilfoyle Family, Kingston Homes. Whitewall Projects, John Walsh at The Village Greengrocer and Bernard Lawton of Value Centre , along with all others who are helping in any way.

A big word of thanks also to our teams and tee box sponsors who have come forward so far - but whilst there has been alot done, there is much more to do to reach our ambitious targets.

Thus, over the next few weeks, we urge all our supporters and friends to continue to play their part. Every team and every tee box is crucial to the success of the Golf Classic - remember all funds are going towards the construction and completion of our new club gymnasium, work on which will commence shortly.

Intermediate League Game

Our intermediate hurlers concluded their RED FM Div 5 League campaign with a trip to Ballygarvan on Sunday morning.  Having played into a strong wind in the first half we trailed by 1-11 to 0-7 at half time - a manageable deficit - however, the strength to the wind decreased for  awhile in the second half and with with 12 minutes to go, Ballygarvan stil led by 2-14 to 0-11.

Andrew Kelly's goal sparked a revival and the gap gradually closed with some fine points by Jack McGann (long range free), Conán Finnegan (free).Billy McGann and Cian Murphy which kept Castlemartyr within striking distance.  But a tally of eleven wides in that second thirty minutes was ultimately to prove very costly and in the end the home team ran out winners by 2-16 to 1-15.  A standout display by Oran Murphy, making his first defensive start, was one of the few high points of the day.

Overall,  mixed bag of league results, reflected in a mid table finish.

Renée Barry R.I.P

A minute's silence was observed in Ballygarvan on Sunday prior to our league game as Castlemartyr remembered the late Renée Barry...one of the club's great supporters.
The sympathy of all in Castlemartyr GAA is extended to the Barry family at this sad time.

May Renée rest in peace.

Junior Hurlers

Meanwhile, our junior hurlers are also safe from the spectre of relegation. They lost out in a high scoring affair 1-23 to 5-14 against St Ita's in their final home game, but their win against St Catherine's by 3-28 to 2-7 in their penultimate fixture saw them banish any relegation fears.

Thanks to St Catherine's for agreeing to this refixture on what was a poignant week for the club as we mourned the loss of our former player and Club officer Frank Hayes R.I.P. The teams observed a minute's silence before the match in memory of the late Frank.

As for the game itself, Darragh Cashman scored 1-2 in their first half as the home team played into the wind at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park. The hosts really kicked on in the second period with Jamie Stack putting in strong performance scoring 2-6 overall , Cian Murphy firing over 0-8 and Daire Coughlan registering 0-5 in a solid all round team display.

Championship time is a few months away but both our hurling sides will be making their plans for July and August in the lead into their respective opening ties.

Abernethy Cup

Finally, our home venue looked in great shape for the recent Abernethy Cup game, with Willie Walshe and the crew having the pitch in pristine condition - All Ireland champions, Ballygunner remarked on the excellence of our facilities, but showed little mercy on a understrength Imokilly team as they set their stall out ahead of their championship opening game against Passage in Waterford next Friday.
