Young Glenville Side Bow Out After Brave Semi-Final Effort
Glenville's Junior 2 footballers suffered a narrow 3-10 to 3-7 defeat to Cobh on Monday evening in a rescheduled league semi-final, bringing a promising campaign to an end.
The original fixture had been abandoned a few weeks earlier due to heavy fog, and with a place in the league final against St. Catherine's and promotion to the Junior 1 League for 2027 at stake, there was plenty to play for.
Despite travelling with a depleted squad due to holidays and examinations, Glenville matched their hosts for long periods. The opening ten minutes were evenly contested before Cobh struck for the first goal of the game to create some daylight. Glenville responded immediately with an excellent team move that was clinically finished to the net by Jayden, keeping the visitors firmly in contention.
Playing into the breeze, Glenville found scores difficult to come by in the opening half and went into the break four points adrift, but remained confident they could turn the game around.
The second half was a closely fought affair, with both sides producing some excellent football. Goals from Shane and Dave, along with two superb two-point scores from Dave, kept Glenville right in the contest. However, with a very young side on the field, the visitors just lacked the experience to press home their advantage, while Cobh showed great composure in the closing stages to secure a 3-10 to 3-7 victory.
While missing out on a league final was disappointing, Glenville can reflect on an extremely positive campaign. A total of 27 players lined out for the Junior 2 side during the league, with 11 members of the club's minor panel making their first appearances at this level, alongside several others stepping up to adult football for the first time.
The experience gained throughout the league will stand this young squad in good stead as attention now turns to the opening round of the championship on July 26.
Junior 3s Battle Hard Against Midleton
Glenville's Junior 3 footballers faced a strong Midleton side and, after a slow start that saw a number of early goals conceded, found themselves chasing the game for much of the contest.
Despite the difficult opening, the team continued to work hard and never gave up, showing plenty of determination and commitment throughout. There were encouraging passages of play as Glenville battled to stay in the game against quality opposition.
A standout performer was Eoin Fitzgerald, who finished with an impressive tally of five points, including a superb two-pointer that was one of the highlights of the evening.
While the result didn't go Glenville's way, the squad will take plenty of positives from the effort and look to build on the performance in the games ahead.
U11 Footballers Show Great Character Against Dungourney
Well done to all the boys who represented Glenville against Dungourney and produced a spirited performance in challenging conditions.
After a slow start, the team showed tremendous determination, resilience and teamwork to battle back with an excellent second-half display. Every player worked tirelessly for one another, and the improvement as the game progressed was a real credit to their attitude and commitment.
Playing in very warm weather, the lads never gave up and showed plenty of skill, effort and heart throughout.
Well done to everyone involved, and thanks to Dungourney for a sporting and enjoyable game.
Glenville U10s Shine in Double Header
Glenville's Under 10 footballers enjoyed a busy day of action as they took on Fr. O'Neill's and Bride Rovers in two entertaining and competitive fixtures.
The young Glenville side produced some excellent football across both games, displaying impressive skill, teamwork and determination throughout. Their hard work on the training field was evident, with accurate passing, strong tackling and some well-taken scores highlighting two encouraging performances.
Every player played their part, showing great enthusiasm and commitment while continuing their development in the black and amber jersey.
Well done to all the players for their efforts, and thanks to Fr. O'Neill's and Bride Rovers for two sporting games. Appreciation also goes to the coaches, mentors and parents for their continued support.
Dads & Lads | Football, Friendship & Fun
There was a fantastic atmosphere in St. Catherine's as Glenville's Dads & Lads took to the field for an enjoyable evening of football.
Both teams played the game in exactly the right spirit, with plenty of skill, effort and determination on show, while the good-natured banter and camaraderie between players made for a memorable occasion.
A sincere thank you to St. Catherine's for their wonderful hospitality, both on and off the pitch. The refreshments after the game were hugely appreciated and provided the perfect finish to a great evening.
Special mention to the Glenville contingent who flew the flag with distinction – Denis Buttimer, Niall O'Connor, John O'Connor, Colm Molloy, Michael Dinan, Micheál McCourt and Fergal Murphy.
Achill man Colm Molloy produced a display worthy of Koby McDonald, gliding around the pitch with the confidence of a man who thought he was back on the beaches of Achill rather than in St. Catherine's.
Derry native Micheál McCourt showed exactly what the Oak Leaf County have been missing since he relocated to Cork, bringing plenty of drive and no little skill to the occasion.
Denis Buttimer rolled back the years with an effortless performance, proving that class really is permanent, even if the recovery time isn't.
Niall O'Connor covered enough ground to earn himself a fitness tracker sponsorship, popping up in every position except the one he started in.
Michael Dinan was the calming influence throughout, making everything look easy and quietly keeping things ticking over.
Fergal Murphy brought his usual mix of determination and enthusiasm, never giving an opponent a moment's peace and making sure every ball was fiercely contested.
John O'Connor put in a solid shift, wisely conserving just enough energy to make it to the refreshments afterwards.
No league tables. No trophies. Just great football, great company, plenty of laughs, full stomachs and a few sore muscles the next day.
Long may it continue!
Féile
Everyone at Glenville GAA would like to wish Watergrasshill U15 Ladies Football team, their management and supporters the very best of luck as they travel to Derry this weekend to represent Cork in the National Féile Division 1 Ladies Football competition.
It is a fantastic achievement to reach the national stage, and we hope everyone enjoys the experience and has a successful weekend.
Ahead of this weekend's National Féile, Watergrasshill Ladies Football Club look back on the journey that brought them to the national stage:
Watergrasshill U15 girls are heading north this weekend to represent Cork in the National Féile Division 1 Ladies Football competition, which takes place at Derry GAA’s Centre of Excellence in Owenbeg on Saturday, 27 June.
It is a tremendous achievement for the squad of 25 players and coaches, who have battled through two demanding stages of competition to earn their place on the national stage.
Their journey began in the East Cork Féile, hosted by Inch Rovers in Killeagh. Watergrasshill defeated Lisgoold and Youghal in the group stages before overcoming hosts Inch Rovers in the semi-final. They then faced Fermoy in a hard-fought final, where both sides showed great skill, strength and determination before the Hill girls came out on top to claim the East Cork title.
The Watergrasshill Ladies club competes in both camogie and ladies football, and this group had already reached the semi-final of the Division 1 Camogie Féile, narrowly losing out to Aghabullogue. There was little time to dwell on that disappointment, however, as attention quickly turned to the County Division 1 Football Féile in Ballincollig over the May Bank Holiday weekend.
On a sunny day of excellent football, teams from across Cork competed in two groups of four, with reaching the final requiring five games in just over five hours. Watergrasshill were drawn alongside Ibane, Mourneabbey and Ballincollig, and the full squad played its part across the group games, keeping energy levels high for the semi-final against Éire Óg.
A strong performance there set up a county final against Mallow, who had beaten several fancied teams along the way. The final proved to be a thriller, with both sides enjoying periods of dominance and producing football of a very high standard.
Watergrasshill led in the closing stages, but a late Mallow free left supporters holding their breath. With red jerseys packed across the goal line, a powerful strike was superbly tipped away to safety, sparking huge relief and celebration as the final whistle confirmed Watergrasshill as county champions.
It was a memorable day for the village, as the Watergrasshill boys’ Féile hurling team also won their competition. A parade through the village for both teams marked a special moment for the community.
Since then, a major fundraising effort has helped cover the cost of travelling to Derry. With the old tradition of teams staying with local families no longer in place since Covid, hotel accommodation is now required, making community support more important than ever. Local businesses, friends and families have responded generously, driven by an outstanding group of parents.
Several of the girls have also represented Watergrasshill at Imokilly and Cork level over the past year, from U13 to U16, which is a great sign for the future of the club.
The team is managed by John Fenton, supported by selectors Cliona Cotter, Emer Fennell, Marie Kennedy, Claire O’Connell, Dave O’Brien, Emmett Fennell and Liam Tracey.
