Saints return to winning ways in division 4 of the County Hurling League

 

 

Round 6 Division 4 Red FM Sponsored County Hurling League

St Catherines 1-19 Cloughduv 2-13

St Catherines made the better, livelier start to this round 6 County Hurling League tie, played in overcast conditions at Ballynoe on Friday evening last. However, they saw a lot of their good early work undone. Ian O’Halloran scored a softish goal right on the fifteen-minute mark, regaining the initiative when good work by Daniel Mangan saw Matthew Mulcahy close out the first-half scoring. His goal on thirty-two minutes set up a three-point lead on a 1-08 to 1-05 half-time scoreline.

Replacement Eoin Condon was quick to make an impression early after the change of ends, setting up Eoghan O’Riordan for a well-taken score before pointing himself shortly afterwards. The three-point margin was maintained at 1-11 to 1-08 up to thirty-four minutes. Largely speaking, though, overall there was never much between two even, well-matched teams.

Like when Colm O’Leary released Harry Murphy to finish off the opposition’s second goal. Ben O’Brien was on hand to add his third point, making it 1-13 to 2-10 twelve minutes into the second half. A couple of Mark Walsh points would then see Cloughduv into a narrow lead at 2-12 to 1-13 just at the end of the third quarter.

But the home team finished strongly. Three points without reply from Diarmuid O’Connell, Will Leamy, and Daniel Mangan confirmed a well-earned success on an eventual 1-19 to 2-13 scoreline. St Catherine’s also collected the points on offer in the corresponding fixture played in Cloughduv last June.

Their tally now stands at five points collected from six matches played. Bishopstown are the visitors at the end of the month. Don’t’ forget, St Catherines and Cloughduv will renew rivalries later in the season, opening their respective campaigns when they meet in round 1 group 2 of the Premier County Junior Hurling Championship. The match is fixed for Ballygarvan on the afternoon of Saturday, August 1st and is timed for 4:30pm.

Round 1 Division 2 East Cork Junior Football League (rescheduled)

St Catherines 1-09 Aghada 0-12

This game was originally planned as a season opener back in early March but was cancelled due to the sudden, still deeply felt loss of our esteemed colleague Shane O’Connell. Rescheduled with the mutual agreement of both clubs, it was played in Ballynoe on the evening of Monday, May 11th last.

A busy night all told saw a good, lively start for the home-based team. Three Eoin Condon points to eleven minutes preceded Gavin England playing his part in setting up Evan O’Driscoll for the Saints’ and the game’s only goal, establishing a four-point advantage on a half-time scoreline standing at 1-04 to 0- 03. A further three-point haul from Philip Keane pushed it out to 1-07 to 0-04 by forty-three minutes. But the value of two points in this game, be it club or county, can’t be highlighted enough. With the

teams now level on a 1-08 to 0-11 scoreline and twenty-three minutes elapsed on the second-half clock, a Johnny Hurley pass picked out Conor Hayes, and for one fleeting moment, it felt like the winning score. However, Conall Rooney, who kicked over the second of Aghada’s two points, showed up again for the equalising score right at the death. The tally is now seven points from five matches played. Remaining division 2 football league fixtures are against Ballinacurra and Midleton.

Round 4 Division 2 Rebel Óg East Minor Hurling League

St Catherines 3-17 Castlelyons 2-13

After an illness borne bravely, Pat O’Neill passed away last week. Born in Kilfinane, came to Ballynoe, working there for many years in the parish. Married in Castlelyons, it was fitting then that both clubs organised a minute’s silence in his memory prior to this Minor Hurling League tie, played in ferociously windy conditions at Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, May 13th last. ‘Magic’ had a warm, endearing personality and was the kind of fellow you loved meeting. He will be missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Backed by that strong breeze, Sean Walsh was unerring in his free-taking. Boosted by an Alan Cotter goal from a clinical finish on twenty-one minutes, strong defensive play with Cathal Higgins, Eoghan O’Mahony, Callum O’Driscoll, and Tristan Clancy prominent saw the home-based team in a good position and ahead on a 2-11 to 0-05 half-time scoreline. Just how strong we were about to witness. A third goal, finished off by the ideally placed Shane O’Donoghue coming up to the end of the third quarter, meant a certain inevitability hung over the eventual end result. Ciarán Murphy was very good for Castlelyons, and they finished strongly.

A first loss for this particular age group in this code after round 4 of the U16 hurling league when played in Ballynoe on Monday evening, May 11th last. Just beware, round 2 was derailed due to the fuel crisis - remember that?! However, the next game should have been played in Watergrasshill on Monday evening last, May 18th. Full report next week.

Midleton 2-09 St Catherines 7-18

This match turned out much more emphatic than the league success attained at the same venue a fortnight previously when this round 1 U14 Hurling Championship tie was played against what amounts to Midleton’s second-string team at the opponent’s venue on Wednesday evening, May 13^th last. They round off their football aspirations vs. Kiltha Óg at Ballynoe this forthcoming weekend. Sarsfields and Castlelyons are also in the hurling group.
