Premier Junior Football League

Kilmacabea 2-17
Glenville 2-5
Our Premier Junior team made the long trek west to Leap on Saturday afternoon to take on Kilmacabea in Round 6 of the County Division 6 Football League.
Played in glorious sunshine in the picturesque setting just outside Leap village, Glenville started brightly with early points from Dara O’Bric and Colin O’Keeffe. Kilmacabea then found their rhythm, however, and hit 1-4 without reply before a cleverly taken goal from Ciaran Linehan got Glenville back into the contest.
Kilmacabea struck again before half-time with a goal and a two-pointer, leaving the score at 2-6 to 1-2 at the break. While the deficit did not look insurmountable, Kilmacabea came out strongly after the restart, adding five points in the opening ten minutes of the second half, with Colin Cronin replying for Glenville.
Glenville steadied things with a good spell midway through the half, scoring 1-2 in three minutes. Colin O’Keeffe and Ryan Loftus pointed before Conor O’Mahony finished a terrific move to the net. With the gap back to six points, Glenville were denied what looked a strong penalty shout following a foul on Ryan Loftus in the square.
That proved a key moment, and Kilmacabea finished strongly, hitting six unanswered points in the closing stages to run out winners on a scoreline of Kilmacabea 2-17 Glenville 2-5.
It was a disappointing result for Glenville, though there were still positives to take, with a number of good individual performances. Darragh O’Bric and Colin Cronin were particularly prominent throughout.
With two league games remaining, Glenville’s promotion hopes have taken a knock, but it will be important to finish what has been a very promising league campaign strongly.
Glenville’s next league outing is at home to Dromtariffe on Friday, June 5th.
Thanks to Kilmacabea for hosting and to the referee and officials.

Junior 2 Fixture Abandoned

Glenville’s Junior 2 Football League game away to Cobh last Wednesday night was abandoned after 35 minutes due to deteriorating weather conditions and heavy fog/mist.

Played in difficult conditions throughout, visibility became increasingly poor as the game progressed before the referee eventually made the decision to halt proceedings in the interests of player safety.

Glenville had battled well up to that point and held a two-point lead when the game was stopped. Both teams had worked hard in challenging conditions, with Glenville showing plenty of determination and good teamwork before the abandonment.

A decision on the refixture is expected to be confirmed at a later date.

U18 Football League Result
Glenville 3-11 Mallow 3 1-7

The Glenville U18 Div 4 team recorded a solid home win over Mallow 3 on Wednesday 20th in Glenville with a strong all-round team performance.

Glenville started the game brightly and settled quickly, moving the ball well and taking their scores at the right times to build an early advantage. The home side controlled much of the opening half and went in at the break with a comfortable lead after some excellent work throughout the field.

Mallow battled hard after half time and made Glenville work for everything, but the home side continued to create plenty of chances. At times Glenville could probably be accused of being a little too goal-hungry, with a number of point-scoring opportunities passed up while searching for major scores.

To the lads’ credit, they eventually settled themselves and focused again on the basics, working the ball through the hands and keeping the scoreboard moving with some well-taken points. Defensively the team also worked hard throughout, limiting Mallow’s scoring opportunities and responding well whenever the visitors threatened to get back into the contest.

Overall it was a deserved victory and another encouraging performance from the squad as they continue to develop and improve together. The final score was Glenville 3-11 Mallow 3 1-7.

Best Wishes

Best of luck to all our Glenville players, members and families who are beginning their Leaving Cert examinations on Wednesday, June 3rd.

It is a huge milestone and a very important few weeks ahead, but everyone in the club knows the hard work, dedication and preparation that has gone in over the past number of years. We have no doubt that all our students will do themselves proud.

The Leaving Cert can be a challenging and demanding time, so it is important to remember to take breaks, look after yourselves and keep everything in perspective. No exam defines who you are, and there are always many different paths and opportunities ahead.

We hope the exams go smoothly for all involved and that everyone gets the results they are hoping for. Enjoy the experience as best you can and remember that the entire Glenville community is behind you.

Wishing you all the very best of luck over the coming weeks.

U13 Football League – Weekend Round-Up

Great win for our U13 Team 2 over the weekend away to St Colmcilles GAA in Whites Cross. After a tough and narrow defeat to Glanmire GAA the previous night, the lads showed fantastic character and determination to bounce back with a brilliant one-point victory.

It was a huge effort from all the players to play two competitive games in two nights and the attitude and commitment shown by the squad was outstanding. Well done to all involved.

Thanks to St Colmcilles GAA for hosting and to the referee for officiating.

The lads played some brilliant football at times, showing excellent teamwork, skill and determination from start to finish. There was great movement off the ball, some very sharp passing and support play, along with a number of well-taken scores over the course of both games.

Defensively, the work rate and effort were outstanding, with players battling hard for each other and competing for every ball. It was particularly encouraging to see the confidence and improvement within the group continuing to grow with every outing, with all players contributing strongly across both matches.

Most importantly, the players showed a fantastic attitude and sportsmanship throughout and represented Glenville superbly once again.

Well done to all involved and thanks to Fermoy for hosting two very sporting and enjoyable games.

Congratulations to the Cork footballers on a fantastic comeback win over Meath at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday.

Trailing by eight points at half time, Cork showed tremendous character, determination and belief to battle their way back into the game and produce an outstanding second-half performance. The intensity, work rate and quality shown after the break was superb as Cork turned the game around in front of a huge home support.
