ROCA SPORTS EAST CORK DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL LEAGUE, FRIDAY MAY 8th in BallynoeSt. Catherine’s 1-08, Glenbower Rovers 4-12
Our best football performance of 2026 saw us beat the previously unbeaten Saints, who will play in the Junior A Championship this summer, with a convincing win in Ballynoe, with reiteoir Pa Beausang i lár na páirce. St. Catherine’s got off to a quick start with the opening two points but after Richie Long raised the first of our four green flags on 8 minutes, we held our opponents scoreless until the 29th minute. In the intervening twenty one minutes we added a further 2-04, with the Brennan brothers playing starring roles. Forget the TV lads from Kerry – Francis and John – the Brennan brothers worth writing about are Fionn and Cathal! Fionn made two brilliant saves at one end of the pitch – on 13 and 28 minutes, while 17 year old Cathal (making his debut along with another 17 year old, Patrick Dineen) opened his account with an excellent point on 16 minutes and scored our second goal three minutes later. By half time our lead was ten points – 3-05 to 0-04, with Paudie Mackey scoring our third goal on 28 minutes. We added a quick point from Sean Walsh, scored ten seconds after Rob Sinclair’s possession and surging run on the throw-in. We then took a collective 15-minute sabbatical, with four wides in succession until we resumed our scoring on 46 minutes. Thankfully, our defence was very dominant in this quarter, conceding just two points in that time, with George Walsh, Padraig Leahy and Evan Lane to the fore. Eoin Brenner’s point got us going again, with Adrian Galvin scoring a fine point on his return to playing action, and Paudie Mackey adding our fourth goal in the closing minutes, assisted by our best player on the night Robbie Treacy, whose fielding, tackling and passing was of the highest quality throughout. We return to the top of the table, albeit having played more games than all other teams. We have one game left, away to Cobh, on June 4th, where a win would see us finish on ten points, which may be enough to see us promoted and in line for a league final. All thoughts will shortly turn to preparation for a tough championship ahead, which sees us taking on Glenville on July 26th (morning), Bride Rovers on August 15th and Castlelyons on September 12th in Junior B, while our Junior C footballers will take on St. Catherine’s on July 26th (evening) and Youghal on August 16th.
Team: Fionn Brennan, Aaron Fitzgibbon, George Walsh, Padraig Leahy, Ciaran Leahy, Jamie Fogarty, Evan Lane, Robbie Treacy, Rob Sinclair, Eoin Brenner, Sean Walsh, Keane Budds, Paudie Mackey, Richie Long, Cathal Brennan, Adrian Galvin, Patrick Dineen.
RED FM DIVISION 7 HURLING LEAGUE, SATURDAY MAY 16th in Killeagh
Killeagh 3-16, Carraig na bhFear 2-18
For sheer excitement, this stands out as one of the games of the year so far! For the second successive match in this league, we scored 3-16, and while this scoreline only garnered one point for us on our trip to Kilshannig a fortnight ago, this time we sealed the deal in the most satisfying fashion. Richie Long’s last-minute point, with a key assist from busy sub Diarmuid Buckley, gave us the lead for the first and only time, and the win, following a mighty last-quarter comeback. The game had started very differently, as Carraig na bhFear raced into an early four point lead inside three minutes, with the aid of the wind and our slow start. Andrew Leahy got us off the mark with a free, but Carraig replied with their opening goal to stretch their lead to six – 1-014 to 0-01. Dara Motherway then reprised his Killavullen performance with 1-01 in a three minute period from the 7th to 10th minutes, with a Dinny Walsh point sandwiched in between. The goal was a Shane O’Donnell-type bat to the net after securing possession from a long Dinny delivery, he in turn having been fed by the excellent Allen Keniry who secured possession in the left corner back position. Richie Long did the remainder of our scoring for this half, with 1-03, which consisted of one point from a free, two from play and an opportunist goal when he pounced after a long-range Andrew Leahy free broke kindly for him in the large parallelogram. Having played against the wind, we trailed by three points at half time – 1-12 to 2-06 – and looked to be well set up for the second half. However, just like in the football eight days earlier, our opening second half point from Padraig Leahy was followed by five wides in succession, so that by the 44th minute we trailed by 2-15 to 2-07. Then speed merchant Dave Ogbebor did what only he can do, racing through the heart of the Carraig defence and scoring our third crucial goal to give us hope. This hope was strengthened further when Carraig were reduced to 14 men on 49 minutes, but we still trailed by three (2-18 to 3-12) coming up to injury time, with two points from Andrew Leahy (outstanding throughout, with a first touch to rival Joe Canning at his best!), and one each from Richie, Dan Smiddy and Dara. Injury time ran for over seven minutes in total, and in this time, we scored four points without reply from Dave, Andrew (a ’65), Dara and Richie’s late late show! What a win! Hats off to everyone, with the seasoned thirty somethings – Yank, Morro, Mikey, Dinny and Allen – playing key roles, while our two eighteen year olds, Oran Cunnigham and Cian O’Riordan, were excellent all through in defence. Nice also to see one third of the team comprising of the Leahy-origin first cousins – Oran, Padraig, Andrew, Dinny and Dara! Having lost our opening two matches in March to Barryroe and St. Finbarr’s and looking like we might be candidates for a “Slán Leat” position, we have now risen to joint third, just one point behind leaders Na Piarsaigh and Ballinora, both of whom we must still play, along with Douglas. Two wins from these three matches could put us within striking distance of a league final. Now that would be some achievement! Well done to everyone involved, d’imir sibh ar fheabhas ar fad!
Team: Philip O’Neill, Oran Cunnigham, Allen Keniry, Aidan Morrison, Cian O Riordan, Jamie Fogarty, Robbie Treacy, Mikey Fitzgerald, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Padraig Leahy, Andrew Leahy, Dinny Walsh, Richie Long, Dara Motherway, Dan Smiddy, Dave Ogbebor, Diarmuid Buckley, Brian Murphy.
RED FM DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE, SUNDAY May 17th in Charleville
Charleville 2-26, Killeagh 0-13
The long Sunday morning trip to Ráth Luirc was initially overshadowed by the overnight news that Cork captain Darragh Fitzgibbon, he of the same Ráth Luirc, would be out of commission for a number of weeks due to appendix problems. Best wishes Darragh, all of Cork is wishing you a speedy recovery, for the sake of Cork hurling. Anyway, on to the match itself. Our panel was somewhat depleted due to our own injury woes, although we were able to welcome Ben Walsh for his first senior league outing of 2026. After an encouraging opening quarter, where the teams were level at 0-07 each (three frees from Dylan McCarthy, two points for Evan Lane and one each for Eoghan Keniry and Shane Smiddy), once Charleville got on top in the second quarter, we were unable to respond. It was 1-15 to 0-08 ag leath am, and Charleville were then able to introduce their own Cork Under 20 star, Zack Biggane. Our shooting was very wayward in the second half as we added just five more points (two each from Fionn Brennan and Ryan McCarthy, another free from Dylan), but shot eleven wides (thirteen in total). Charleville were comfortable winners by Ciarán Murphy’s final whistle. We play Blackrock National Hurling Club next on Thursday week at home, which now looks like a must-win game if we are to entertain any hope of retaining our Division 1 status for 2027.
Team: Fionn Murphy, Keane Budds, Ben Walsh, Sean Long, Cathal Fitzgibbon, George Walsh Wallace, Rob Sinclair, Ciaran Leahy, Evan Lane, Fionn Brennan, Ryan McCarthy, Dylan McCarthy, John Ogbebor, Eoghan Keniry, Shane Smiddy, Pa O’Brien, Colm Leahy, Dara Motherway.
ROCA SPORTS EAST CORK DIVISION 4 HURLING LEAGUE, SUNDAY MAY 17th in KilleaghKilleagh, 2-05, Bride Rovers 4-21
Our final adult game of a busy weekend saw a strong Bride Rovers team claim a comprehensive victory when they came to town on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately there was a huge gulf in class between the two teams, despite the best efforts of our team, as we trailed by 4-08 to 0-03 at half time. Two goals in the second half, one from Dave Ogbebor and one from Ian Landers, put a small gloss on our scoreboard, but this was a tough day at the office! Two matches left in this league, at home to Sarsfields on May 31st and at home to Erins Own on June 14th.
Team: Colm Crowley, Ian Landers, Conor Meade, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Brendan Keniry, Ben Budds, Ian O’Keeffe, Dave Ogbebor, Dale McMahon, Diarmuid Buckley, John O’Connor, Lee Cooney, Darragh O’Connor, Harry Donegan, Ciaran O’Rourke, Dan Lucey, Darragh Sheehan.
