Castlemartyr GAA News
Busy Schedule
The club's busy schedule of matches continues over the next few days with hurling in the spotlight before we return to football action next Wednesday in Lisgoold.
Junior Hurlers
Our junior hurlers face a hectic few days with a trip to Carraig na bhFear on tomorrow Thursday followed by another away game in Youghal on Saturday.
Castlemartyr are playing catch up in the ROCA Sports JHL Division 2 and will be hoping to move up the table as they currently sit on 2 points after 3 games. Immediate opponents Carraig na bhFear have played a game more but are two points better off, whilst Youghal are on 6 points and have also played a game more than us.
It's a 7.30pm start in Carraig na bhFear tomorrow with Saturday's game at the Top the The Hill venue in Youghal beginning at 4pm.
Intermediate Hurling
Then on Monday our intermediate team make the short trip to play Midleton at Clonmult Memorial Park - 7.30pm. Our squad has been hit severely with injuries in recent weeks, but will be hoping to put their best foot forward in their local derby game. Midleton have 6 points after their 5 outings thus far, having lost out by 2 points to Cloyne in their most recent match.
Football Review
Just a brief reflection back on our most recent football games in the ROCA Sports Division 1 League - which both ended in home defeats to Carraig na bhFear and Carrigtwohill.
First up last week was the 3-15 to 0-13 reversal to Carraig na bhFear, who are current East Cork champions and have a great record in the secondary competition in recent seasons. Despite the welcome return of Eoin Roanyne to defence following a lengthy injury lay off, the excellent form of Barra O'Tuama, back after a shorter injury and some fine play from Odhran Cantwell, - Castlemartyr found it difficult to keep tabs on a lively visiting attack.
Three breakaway goals were the big moments in the first half , as turnovers led to sharp counter attacks, which all finished a green flag.
The "Reds" were 3-6 to 0-6 in arrears at the interval, - and faced an uphill struggle although they had tallied with excellent points from Jack McGann, Conor Ronayne and Cormac Lynch.
Barra O'Tuama, Mike Kelly, Eoghan Martin, Darragh Cashman and Andrew Kelly all kicked second half points, but against a strong visiting outfit - at least one goal was certainly required to make any significant inroads into that 3 goal deficit.
Team - Conor Whyte, Declan Kelly, Eoin Ronayne, Niall O'Donovan, Peter Fleming, Barra O'Tuama, Odhran Cantwell, Daire Coughlan, Jack McGann, Cormac Lynch, Darragh Cashman, Oisín Cantwell, Conor Ronayne, James O'Donovan and Tom Fleming.
Subs Used- Richard Burke, Mike Kelly, Darragh Joyce, Andrew Kelly, Jack O'Neill, Billy McGann, Eoghan Martin.
Carrigtwohill Finish Strong
On Friday against Carrigtwohill, Castlemartyr found themselves 6 points behind at the break, as the visitors eventually ran out winners by 1-17 to 2-10.
Billy McGann's introduction at half time gave an extra spark to the home attack and his 33rd minute goal kick started a revival that gathered momentum when he delivered a second green flag following some great individual play on 43 minutes. It was very much game elon at this stage with Carrig' ahead by 1-13 to 2-7.
Mike Kelly's excellent two pointer minutes later continued the trend shift, but the visitors steadied their challenge and a few wrong options and missed chances were to prove costly as we managed just one more point in the remaining eleven minutes.
In contrast Carrig' got a late run of scores to halt our gallant efforts. A feature of the game were some outstanding kick outs from Castlemartyr
net minder Conor Whyte.
So work to be done to push up the table with next Wednesday's trip to Lisgoold (7.30pm) the earliest opportunity for progress.. Lisgoold, like ourselves, have garnered 4 points from 5 games. Both teams' scoring returns are also very similar.
