Killeagh GAA Club Notes May 3rd 2026
CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Bealtaine 03, 2026
DATES FOR THE DIARY
It’s summer time (perhaps?) so that means it’s time to start planning for three big events that our club will be hosting in the coming months.
First up it’s our Annual 4 Mile Road Race which takes place at 2000 hrs on Thursday May 21st, as part of our Healthy Clubs Project. The change to May last year saw a large crowd rock up on the evening, so don’t be disappointed, get your entry in advance at https://eventmaster.ie/event/eo0WtrKF8x! Páirc Ui Chinnéide is Race HQ, with free parking available. Many thanks to our club sponsor Niall Guerin Construction for his continued sponsorship of our Road Race.
Second date, or series of dates for your diary is July 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th, when we host our 30th Annual Golf Classic in West Waterford Golf Club. Our Golf Classic, spearheaded once again by the irrepressible Ray Rochford, is one of the largest in the country, and also one of the most popular, with teams returning year after year due to the warm welcome and hospitality they receive! It’s also our main fundraiser each year, so please consider sponsoring a team, a tee-box or talk to Ray (087-2330054) if you have a cash windfall you’d like to send to a good home!
Finally, for our younger folk, Cúl Camp 2026 takes place from July 13th to 17th in Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Registration is now open at https://www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie/booking/?county=Cork&venue=3988&week=4. Contact Brendan Delaney, Cúl Camp Co-Ordinator, Killeagh GAA at 086-3928154 if you have any questions.
Lovely hurling for the past weekend, with action at home and away for our first three adult teams. Seo iad na torthaí agus na scéalta.
ROCA SPORTS EAST CORK DIVISION 2 HURLING LEAGUE, FRIDAY MAY 1st in Killeagh Killeagh 1-12, Carraig na bhFear 1-11
A good start to the weekend, and a first win for our Division 2 hurlers on May Day. While we have been extolling the virtues of our younger brigade through the opening months of this season, particularly our 2007 contingent, this match featured a half-back line of Johnno, Brian and Brendan with a combined age of 120, showing that there’s life in many of the old dogs yet. Add to this our returning goalkeeper Shane Scully and Cork Masters star Davy Kelleher, both of whom are also within the range to keep that average well above four decades, then this was a very impressive advertisement for the seasoned hurlers! One of the younger contingent, warrior Kieran Lane, a mere garsún at recently-turned 38, scored our crucial goal in the second half to secure this win, with Davy Kelleher’s second point closing out our scoring. There were many other positives, including Lee Cooney adding to his status with a fine performance and score, while the actual teenager on the team, young Eoin Roche, showed his progress over the past year with two fine points, one in each half. Aaron Walsh was also in scintillating form, with four points from play, while Dave Ogbebor gave his usual all-action performance, nominally named in midfield, but covering the usual ‘gach áit timpeall na páirce’ and stumping up with two points, one per half. Well done to everyone, next up is the long trip to Pilmore on the last day of May to play the green and white Saints, followed by another long-distance journey to Ballynoe on June 14th to play the purple and gold Saints.
Team: Shane Scully, Diarmuid Buckley, Conor Meade, Tadhg O’Connor, John O’Connor, Brian Collins, Brendan Keniry, Eoin Roche, Dave Ogbebor, Lee Cooney, Kieran Lane, Davy Kelleher, Shane Kearney, Darragh O’Connor, Aaron Walsh, Brian Murphy, Darragh Sheehan, Colm Crowley.
RED FM DIVISION 7 HURLING LEAGUE, SATURDAY MAY 2nd in Glantane
Kilshannig 2-19, Killeagh 3-16
An absolutely cracking game in the middle of the county in the middle of the afternoon! A game we should have won, could have lost, and ended up taking one extra point home with us against the league leaders, so not so bad, all in all! A strange game in many ways too, with all our scores coming from play as we missed the only two scoreable frees we were awarded by reiteoir Peter O’Donovan. While we led by 12 points at one stage in the second half, we also trailed by one before Paudie Mackey’s fourth point tied the game up for the final time. A quick start saw Dinny Walsh open the scoring with our first point, quickly followed by points from Dara Motherway and Richie Long. Within eight minutes, we had 2-04 on the scoreboard, with Dara and Richie scoring almost identical goals two minutes apart from the left corner forward position, with assists from Matthew Murphy and Sean Walsh, respectively. It was 2-06 to 0-07 after 20 minutes (Matthew and Sean adding points of their own), while we finished the half strongly with five additional points from play – two each from Andrew Leahy and Paudie Mackey and one from Richie. We began the second half in blistering fashion, with Dara reprising his first-half cameo – a point followed by another goal on 36 minutes. When Padraig Leahy collected Cian O’Riordan’s sideline in midfield and drilled over a beautiful long-range point, we led by 3-14 to 0-11 with 38 minutes on the clock, and we appeared comfortable. We now know that a double-digit lead gives you no guarantees in either hurling or football these days, and that’s exactly what transpired here. The hosts began their comeback with a goal on 43 minutes, adding another on 48 minutes to whittle our lead down to just one score – 3-14 to 2-14. By this point, Kilshannig had scored three points from frees, but in the final ten minutes, they converted three further frees, while we missed the only one within range for us. It had looked like their final point would be the winner until Paudie’s late equaliser, and even after that we had one final chance to win with a long-distance sideline which just tailed away to leave an dá fhoireann ar chomhscór! Thanks to Kilshannig GAA for the welcome and the much-appreciated post-match refreshments in their impressive club premises. Four games left in this league where we now have five points from five games. Next up we host our divisional colleagues Carraig na bhFear on Saturday 16th May at 1800 hrs, followed by a trip to Douglas, a home fixture against Na Piarsaigh, and another at home to Ballinora. Leanaigí ar aghaidh, lads!
Team: Philip O’Neill, Tadhg Considine, Allen Keniry, Aidan Morrison, Cian O Riordan, Matthew Murphy, Robbie Treacy, Padraig Leahy, Sean Walsh, Fionn Brennan, Andrew Leahy, Dinny Walsh, Richie Long, Dara Motherway, Paudie Mackey, Davy Kelleher, Aaron Walsh, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Eoin Roche.
RED FM DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE, SUNDAY May 3rd in Killeagh
Killeagh 0-17, St. Finbarr’s 2-17
St. Finbarr’s were our first Senior Hurling League visitors to Páirc Uí Chinnéide twenty four years ago in March 2002, and we welcomed them once again on May Sunday 2026. It may be summer on the Celtic calendar (though the meteorologists and astronomers have their own different start dates), but it sure didn’t feel like summer or May Sunday as the rain fell throughout, making for very slippery underfoot conditions. Whether this was a factor in one third of our starting team leaving the pitch with injuries, we can’t be sure, but it was a tough day for hurling. We started brightly, with points from Rob Sinclair, Dave Buckley and Eoghan Keniry giving us a 0-03 to 0-01 lead after six minutes, but then our visitors took control with eight unanswered points, to lead by 0-09 to 0-03 at the 20 minute mark. Jack Cahalane, Ben Cunningham and Ricky Barrett were the main threat from the Blues up front. Encouragingly, a point from Evan Lane followed by a brace from Dylan McCarthy helped us to reduce the margin to five by half time (0-11 to 0-06). The second half began with our first converted free in over 90 minutes of hurling, and this proved to be our only scoreable free in the whole game. Two goals in quick succession gave the Barrs a commanding lead (2-12 to 0-09) with still 20 minutes remaining. Credit then to our team, despite losing five players to injury (Dara, Dave, Brendan, Cathal and Ryan), as they battled right to the end. Evan Lane finished in storming fashion, scoring four points from play in the second half, including three in quick succession between the 53rd and 58th minute. Ciaran Leahy, Dinny Walsh, George Walsh, and Eoghan Keniry also added points as we kept Barrs honest, while Fionn Murphy brought off two outstanding saves in the final five minutes to keep the margin to six. We have four matches left in this league, with a trip to Charleville on Sunday May 17th followed by Blackrock at home (Thursday May 28th), Carrigtwohill away (Sunday June 14th) and finally Glen Rovers at home on Sunday June 28th.
Team: Fionn Murphy, Keane Budds, Jamie Fogarty, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Rob Sinclair, Brendan Delaney, George Walsh Wallace, Ciaran Leahy, Evan Lane, Dylan McCarthy, Eoghan Keniry, John Ogbebor, Dave Buckley, Ryan McCarthy, Dara Motherway, Fionn Brennan, Dinny Walsh, Cian O’Riordan, Andrew Leahy, Sean Walsh.
