Dungourney 1-20 Castlemartyr 0-13

- Our second defeat of the season in the RED Division 5 League, as Dungurney took the honours by ten points in Sunday's local derby clash played in miserable weather conditions.

Again lining out minus several players due to injury, Castlemartyr were well in the contest until Dungurney took a grip soon after the resumption to quickly turn their 0-11 to 0-8 interval lead into a 1-14 to 0-10 scoreline within eight minutes. With Jack Leahy firing frees from long and short distances, finding a way back proved a difficult task despite the best efforts of the reds, who lost Charlie O'Neil to a shoulder injury inside the final quarter.

Early on the hosts had led 0-6 to 0-3 entering the second quarter, with Mike Kelly (2) and Billy McGann raising the flags. Castlemartyr then had four unanswered points as the team enjoyed their best period of the game. A feature of this spell were two superb long range frees from Darragh Joyce - overall signs were encouraging. The defence in which the returning Barra O'Tuama was again a standout performer were getting a grip and the movement further forward was beginning to yield dividends.
However, ultimately we found ourselves three points behind at the break, with six of our eight points having come from placed balls.

Although Mike Kelly added his fifth soon after the change of ends, that Dungounney purple patch was to put daylight between the teams. Three further points from Mike and one from Andrew Kelly closed out our scoring, with Dungourney kicking on late on to stretch their comfort zone to a ten points winning margin.

So, not the required result against a side who are now showing five wins from five outings. Our return is four points from as many outings, so work to be done to move up the table, with away matches to follow against Midleton, Kilbrittain and Ballygarvan and just one home game against Youghal. Here's hoping some of our walking wounded are back in action sooner rather then later.
( The team's next game is away to Midleton on Monday 18th (7.30pm)
