THREE CHEERS!
- Brilliant Barry, Wondrous Walsh, or your own headline of choice! Congratulations to all the Cork senior team and management on a great win over All-Ireland Champions Tipperary in the Home of Hurling! But particular praise to young teenager Barry for an outstanding display of courage and skill, and most of all, resilience! When the first couple of balls didn’t go his way, it would have been understandable had he struggled to make an impact on the game. But such is this young man’s presence and character that he kept on going and took the opportunities presented to him when they came his way, with four points of outstanding quality from four shots, as well as playing his part in winning frees and setting up other scores. Our legend Joe Deane had some frustrating days in 1996, 1997 and 1998 as he began his senior hurling career before All-Ireland and All-Star glory came his way in 1999, while many other great hurlers also took a number of seasons to get into their stride! Without putting too much pressure on your young shoulders, Barry, it looks like you were born to it. May 2026 bring you great sporting success and personal pride. And it’s not just you and your team-mates who are hoping for that – the proletariat and diaspora of the People’s Republic of Cork are also crossing our fingers that the famine will end this year.
- To Charlie Landers and James Kelleher who had their own opportunity to line out on the hallowed turf of Semple Stadium in The Primary Game! What an opportunity for these two boys! Let’s hope it will be the first of many such opportunities to represent their county.
- To our social media guru – on two fronts. Firstly, for an insightful interview on Prime Time which has raised awareness once again about road safety and the impact of road accidents, and secondly, for another Wheelchair Basketball National League title with the invincible Rebel Wheelers! Maith thú, Rory!
And after that, some excellent performances from our own local heroes also!
ROCA SPORTS EAST CORK DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL LEAGUE, SUNDAY APRIL 12th in Killeagh Glenbower Rovers 2-12, Ballinacurra 0-07
Our Division 2 football league campaign is going from strength to strength, as we rise to second place in the table after our fourth game, and remain unbeaten with two wins and two draws. This was a very good performance, with Fionn Murphy scoring two goals, one in either half, and Paudie Mackey excelling from placed balls (five in the first half) and adding an excellent point from play. Fionn’s opening goal on 16 minutes came as the final act in a great team move involving George Walsh, Paudie and Dara Motherway, who set up Fionn for a simple palm to the net. The second goal’s assist was provided by Eoin Roche in the game’s final play. Richie Long scored a point in each half and Eoin Brenner and Dara Motherway were also on the scoresheet. At the other end our defence was much tighter than in our three previous games, conceding just two points from play in the hour. Next up we travel to Rostellan on this Wednesday evening, April 22nd, with a 1915 hrs throw-in. Let’s keep the momentum going in our push for promotion to Division 1. Our final two games then will be away to St. Catherine’s and to Cobh. Drive on lads!

RED FM DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE, THURSDAY APRIL 16th in AGHAVINE
Fr. O’Neills, 0-17, Killeagh 3-13
A mighty win! Last September, Aghavine was the scene of a championship wipe-out for our Senior A hurlers against Carrigtwohill. Having lost our opening three matches in the Red FM Division 1 Hurling League, and with our hosts in a similar position, Thursday evening’s game took on the air of a “relegation four-pointer”, even this early in the campaign. To come away with a win then, our first in many years over our neighbours, was a great source of comfort. The graph is turning. While both teams were without their Cork representatives (Ger, Deccie and Paudie for O’Neill’s, Ben and Barry for us), we also lost our goalkeeper Philip in the warm-up. (Maybe you could ask your ‘bird’ friends to write a song about that now, Philip!) Not to worry! Brendan Delaney, the man for all seasons and all scenarios, taking his lead from the Wexican Kennedy’s battle cry “Ask Not What Your Club Can Do For You, Ask What You Can Do For Your Club”, stepped into the breach, and not only kept a clean sheet, but also pulled off excellent saves and delivered quality ball to his lively teammates. Credit to all our defenders who improved exponentially from the Midleton game, with Jamie Fogarty and Pa O’Brien very brave and effective in their central positions, and Keane Kelly Budds and Sean Long also very impressive in the corners. Up front, Eoghan Keniry, in his first start since returning from ‘thar lear’, was excellent in the opening quarter with three points, while Ryan McCarthy’s first goal on 20 minutes gave us a 1-06 to 0-08 lead. This lead was extended to five by half-time (2-09 to 0-10) with Ryan’s second goal (an assist here from Dave Buckley) while Ciaran Leahy and Evan Lane were well on top in the congested middle. The second half saw scores dry up a little for both sides, but the crucial move on 45 minutes saw the teenage tearaways Fionn Brennan and John Ogbebor combine for the latter to raise our third green flag. From there to the finish we held out against a concerted onslaught from O’Neill’s which yielded four points, but crucially, no goals. A mighty win is right! We host another of the “Giants” on May Sunday morning at 1130 hrs in Páirc Uí Chinnéide when the famed Barrs come to town! Charleville, Blackrock, Carrigtwohill and Glen Rovers remain. Nothing easy in any of those fixtures! We’re off the mark though!
Team: Brendan Delaney, Keane Budds, Jamie Fogarty, Sean Long, Rob Sinclair, Pa O’Brien, George Walsh Wallace , Evan Lane, Ciaran Leahy, Dylan McCarthy, Eoghan Keniry, Shane Smiddy, John Ogbebor, Ryan McCarthy, Dave Buckley, Fionn Brennan, Dara Motherway, Mikey Fitzgerald, Sean Walsh.
ROCA SPORTS EAST CORK DIVISION 4 HURLING LEAGUE, THURSDAY APRIL 16th in Midleton
Midleton 2-18, Killeagh 1-14
Our StormTroopers lost their unbeaten record in Division 4 on Thursday last, but through no fault or lack of effort, against a youthful Magpies outfit. Midleton led by 0-11 to 0-07 at half time and scored two second-half goals, but we used 23 players, which shows the commitment of this panel and their leaders Colm and Mark. Great displays from Brian Murphy, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Paul Keniry, Eoin Brenner, David Ogbebor and Dale McMahon. We play Bride Rovers at home on May 17th, followed by Sarsfields and Erins Own, also at home.
Team: Brian Murphy, Dermot Motherway, Conor Meade, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Brendan Keniry, John O’Connor, Paul Keniry, Dave Ogbebor, Dale McMahon, Eamonn Byrne, Padraic Carroll, Diarmuid Buckley, Darragh O’Connor, Harry Donegan, Lee Cooney, Ian Landers, Ian O’Keeffe, Sean Lucey, Dylan Halligan, Eoin Brenner, Olin Hennessy, Ciaran O’Rourke, Darragh Sheehan.
RED FM DIVISION 7 HURLING LEAGUE, SATURDAY APRIL 18th in Passage West
Passage West 1-15, Killeagh 0-23
Two in a row now for our Division 7 (Junior A) warriors! When we had our first foray in this grade last year, Passage came to visit and gave us a lesson! This time round, despite the travel, we came away with a confidence-boosting win! Two of the more experienced men, Matthew Murphy and Dan Landers, led the charge, with Matthew outstanding all through and Dan firing over points from all angles, nine in total, including three from play. Oran Cunnigham, Cian O’Riordan and Fionn Brennan continued their impressive apprenticeships with excellent displays. Dara Motherway was also in fine form, with five points from play, while Padraig Leahy, with two in the first half, and Dylan McCarthy (four after half-time, one from play) also added to the scoreboard. Fionn Murphy, Sean Walsh and Keane Kelly Budds scored crucial points in the final quarter, ensuring we build on our win over Meelin the previous week. Next up we travel to league leaders Kilshannig on Saturday May 2nd at the usual throw-in time of 1500 hrs.
Team: Fionn Murphy, Mikey Fitzgerald, Aidan Morrison, Oran Cunningham, Cian O’Riordan, Matthew Murphy, Robbie Treacy, Padraig Leahy, Allen Keniry, Fionn Brennan, Dan Landers, Sean Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Dara Motherway, Richie Long, Dylan McCarthy, Keane Kelly Budds, George Walsh, Wallace, Pierce Geary.
