Busy Week for Glenville Teams

Premier Junior Football League – Cullen 2-7 Glenville 0-7
Glenville travelled to Cullen for their third outing in the Premier Junior Football League on what proved to be an extremely challenging day for football. Heavy rain, strong winds and very difficult underfoot conditions made it hard for both sides to play flowing football, with scores at a premium throughout.
Cullen adapted better to the conditions early on and got off to the stronger start, using the wind advantage to put Glenville under pressure. Despite this, Glenville defended resolutely and worked hard around the middle of the field, but scores proved difficult to come by. Cullen managed to convert their chances and a well-taken goal during the opening half helped them build a lead.
Glenville continued to battle and were rewarded with a couple of well-earned points, but Cullen added further scores before the break to leave the half-time score Cullen 1-4, Glenville 0-2.
Facing into the wind for the second half, Glenville knew they faced a difficult task, but the visitors responded with a much-improved performance. The work rate and determination from the Glenville players was evident as they took the game to Cullen, showing great character in very testing conditions.
Glenville began to gain a foothold around midfield and pushed forward at every opportunity, creating a number of scoring chances. However, the difficult conditions made accuracy challenging and several promising attacks broke down at crucial moments. Cullen managed to add a second goal during this period, which proved a significant score in the context of the game.
To their credit, Glenville never dropped their heads and continued to battle until the final whistle, adding further points and finishing the game strongly. The players showed great commitment and resilience throughout, particularly in the second half when playing against the wind.
In the end, Cullen held on for victory on a final scoreline of 2-7 to 0-7.
While the result did not go Glenville’s way, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance, particularly the improved second-half display and the determination shown by the entire panel in very difficult conditions.

U16 P2 Football League
Glenville 1-14  Erin’s Own 3-11
Glenville and Erin’s Own served up an entertaining U16 P2 Football League encounter in Glenville on Wednesday evening last, with the visitors eventually edging a high-quality contest.
Erin’s Own, a strong and physical side, started well but Glenville matched them throughout much of the opening period with some excellent football. However, approaching half-time, Erin’s Own found their rhythm and added a number of good scores to take a lead into the break.
Erin’s Own again started the second half strongly and extended their advantage with a few early scores. To their credit, Glenville responded admirably and began to work their way back into the game. Some brilliant team moves, often starting from excellent work by the Glenville goalkeeper, resulted in a series of well-taken scores as Glenville began to take control.
The home side continued to push forward and, with three minutes remaining, the sides were level after a superb spell of attacking football from Glenville. Unfortunately, two late scores for Erin’s Own ultimately decided the contest in favour of the visitors.
Despite the result, this was a very encouraging performance from Glenville, with both teams contributing to an excellent game of attacking football. Well done to all the players for their efforts and commitment on the night.

U11s Show Great Spirit in John Kearns Tournament

Glenville’s U11 footballers travelled to St Michael’s on Saturday morning to take part in the John Kearns Tournament, where they faced a very tough test both from their opponents and the weather conditions.
In what can only be described as extremely challenging conditions, the players had to contend with heavy rain, strong winds and even hailstones at times throughout the morning. Despite this, the Glenville boys showed tremendous resilience and determination, battling hard in all three of their matches.
Glenville faced strong opposition in Ballinora, St Nicks and St Michael’s, with all teams fielding competitive sides. The difficult conditions made free-flowing football difficult, but the Glenville players worked tirelessly, showing great effort, teamwork and determination in every game.
Across all three matches, the boys never let their heads drop and continued to work hard for one another. There were excellent displays of teamwork, with players supporting each other throughout, while also showing plenty of skill and determination despite the difficult underfoot and weather conditions.
The tournament proved to be a real test of character, and the Glenville players responded admirably. Even when the conditions worsened with heavy showers and hailstones, the lads kept battling right to the final whistle in each game, demonstrating the great spirit within this group.
There is a strong sense of togetherness among this squad, and it is clear that this is a group continuing to develop and improve with every outing. The experience gained from playing in such testing conditions against strong opposition will stand to the players as the season progresses.
A big thank you to the organisers of the John Kearns Tournament and to St Michael’s for hosting a very well-run event despite the challenging weather conditions. Credit is also due to the referees and volunteers who ensured the games went ahead smoothly.
Well done to all the players for their excellent effort and attitude throughout the morning. Thanks also to the coaches for their continued work with the group, and to the parents for their support and encouragement in difficult conditions.
There is great spirit in this group and plenty to build on — a great bunch of lads who continue to improve every time they take the field.

East Cork JFL Division 3 – Narrow Defeat for Glenville
Bride Rovers 1-6
Glenville 0-7
Glenville travelled to Bride Rovers on Friday night for their East Cork Junior Football League Division 3 clash, with the home side edging a tight and competitive encounter.
This was always going to be a challenging fixture, with Bride Rovers fielding their first team against a Glenville side drawn from their third team panel. Despite this, Glenville produced a determined and hard-working display and pushed the home side all the way throughout.
Scores were hard to come by in what proved to be a tight and physical contest, with both sides working hard and defences on top for long periods. Glenville showed great commitment across the field, competing strongly and staying in touch throughout the game.
Bride Rovers’ goal ultimately proved to be the decisive score in an otherwise evenly matched contest. Glenville responded well and continued to create scoring opportunities, with Eoin Fitzgerald particularly inspirational throughout. His leadership and work rate helped drive Glenville forward and kept the visitors in contention right to the final whistle.
Glenville battled strongly in the second half and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Bride Rovers held on to secure the win on a final scoreline of 1-6 to 0-7.
Despite the narrow defeat, this was a very encouraging performance from Glenville’s third team, who showed great spirit, determination and teamwork against strong opposition. There were plenty of positives to take from the display as the team continues to build momentum in the coming weeks.

Imokilly Off to Winning Start in Senior Football Championship
Imokilly made an impressive start to the Senior Football Championship with a comprehensive 0-16 to 0-5 victory over MTU in Carrigtwohill on Tuesday night.
Imokilly produced a strong all-round display, controlling the contest throughout and showing excellent teamwork and work rate to secure an eleven-point win.
Glenville was well represented on the night, with Liam Ryan, Adam Murphy and Ciarán O’Leary all starting, while Ciarán Lenihan, Colin O’Keeffe, Darragh O’Bric, Shayne Curtin, Colm O’Regan and Donal Sheehan were also included on the Imokilly panel.
The club was also represented in the management set-up, with Pat McHugh involved and Dan Linehan part of the backroom team.
A speedy recovery is wished to Adam Murphy, who suffered a nasty injury early in the game.
It was great to see such strong Glenville representation contributing to an excellent Imokilly performance. Congratulations to all involved and best of luck to Imokilly in the next round.
