Glenville edge out Kildorrery in closely fought league contest
Glenville secured a valuable 2-8 to 0-11 victory over Kildorrery in the McCarthy Insurance Group Football League on Saturday evening in Glenville, with two first-half goals proving decisive in a hard-earned home win.
This was a closely contested and competitive encounter throughout, with very little between the sides over the hour. Glenville, however, made the most of their goal chances in the opening half and that ultimately gave them the edge on the scoreboard.
Kildorrery kept in touch with a steady supply of points, but Glenville struck for two vital goals through Ciaran O’Leary and Adam Murphy. Those majors helped the home side turn a tight opening period in their favour and they went in at the break leading by 2-2 to 0-6.
The second half was a tense affair as Kildorrery battled strongly to get back on terms. Glenville were put under real pressure and endured a 13-minute spell without scoring as the visitors sought to close the gap. To their credit, the Glenville players stayed composed, worked hard defensively and showed plenty of discipline when it mattered most.
Important late scores helped settle Glenville again and ensured they maintained their advantage to the finish, eventually coming through by three points.
It was a determined and resilient display by Glenville, who had to dig deep at times, with those two first-half goals from Ciaran O’Leary and Adam Murphy proving the key moments in a well-earned win.
Glenville Trio Represent Cork with Pride
Well done to Matthew, Alex and Darren who proudly represented Cork in the U16 inter-county games held in Glenville.
Matthew lined out against Limerick, while Alex and Darren featured against Laois, in what was a special occasion for all three players as they had the opportunity to represent their county on their home pitch.
It was a proud day for the club to see three Glenville players wearing the Cork jersey and performing so well. These opportunities are a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by the lads, along with the support of their coaches, teammates and families.
Well done boys — everyone in Glenville GAA is very proud of your efforts and achievements.
U16 Division 4 Football League
Hard luck to the Glenville U16 Division 4 team who faced tough conditions and strong opposition from Mallow.
Despite the challenging weather, the lads showed great determination and kept battling right to the end.
Well done to all the players and management.
Last Man Standing Comes to an End
After seven weeks of stress, bold calls, and a graveyard full of “certainties,” the Glenville GAA Last Man Standing competition has finally come to an end. What began with a massive 366 hopefuls was gradually whittled down, but remarkably 24 participants were still standing at the finish. At that stage, score difference was needed to decide the final placings.
Taking home the €500 prize and, more importantly, the bragging rights, was Conor Gowen, who delivered an outstanding total of 92 points to claim first place.
Hot on his heels was Dan Linehan, finishing in second place with 85 points after staying firmly in contention throughout the competition.
Dave Cooke secured third place with 75 points, completing a strong top three after seven weeks of competitive action.
To go from 366 entrants down to just 24 survivors highlights both the competitiveness and unpredictability of this year’s competition.
Well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to our top three. Thanks to all who supported — and we look forward to doing it all again next year.
