RED FM COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1 Sun 22/03/2026

MIDLETON 1-24 ST FINBARRS 3-17

There was a dramatic finish to our round two County Hurling League Division 1 game at a sunny Clonmult Memorial Park on Sunday last as we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a late late winning goal against St. Finbarrs in front of a fine crowd.

We trailed by two points deep into stoppage time before we were awarded a 21 yard free and forward came Bríon Saunderson to riffle the ball to the back of the net to give us a late but deserved win.

We started brightly and made most of the early running but a St. Finbarrs goal on 21 minutes kept them in the contest and by the half-time whistle we led by three, 0-11 to 1-5, with our opening half white flags coming from Mikey Finn 0-4 (0-1 play), Aaron Mulcahy 0-2, Cormac Walsh, Killian McDermott, Alex Quirke, Pa White and Paul Connaughton 0-1 each.

The Barrs struck for their second goal of the game three minutes after the restart to tie up proceedings at 0-12 to 2-6 but with Peter Barrett and Cian Stack shining with 0-5 between them off the bench we managed to keep our noses in front for most of the second-half.

The Barrs hit the front for the first time in a most entertaining encounter on 53 minutes before we struck back to lead again by one with four minutes to play but once again the men in Blue struck for a green flag to retake the advantage heading towards stoppage time.

On the hour mark the Barrs led by three (3-17 to 0-23) before Aaron Mulcahy narrowed the gap to two and then Brion Saunderson became the late late hero to seal a great win, our second from two league starts on our return to the top flight.

Next up is Killeagh away on Thursday, April 2 at 7.30pm.

Scorers for Midleton: Mikey Finn 0-6 (0-4 frees, 0-1 ‘65), Killian McDermott 0-4, Peter Barrett 0-3, Bríon Saunderson 1-0 f, Aaron Mulcahy, Cian Stack, Cormac Walsh, Ross O’Regan 0-2 each, Alex Quirke, Paul Connaughton, Pa White 0-1 each.

Ladies Football

Intermediate Football League Sun 22/03/2026

Beautiful conditions in Fermoy for the opening round of the intermediate league. Fermoy open proceedings with a point inside a minute. Midleton win possession in defence but Fermoy break it down and begin to put some good passing movement together which leads to a second point. Fermoy get a close in free after 5 minutes and stretch the lead to 3. Things looking ominous already for the much depleted Magpies team. However on 7 minutes some great play by Ella Quirke and Rache Quirke sees Molly  through on goal but she shoots narrowly wide. Midleton win the kick out and with some great passing movement we get our first score through Lucy Cashman. 3-1 points. Then another kick out won and midleton score another point through claire. Fermoy attacked and miss a glorious goal chance from 5 yards. All to play for now 3-2. Fermoy on the attack again and send the ball to the net from a 45 but it's ruled out for a square ball. Fermoy win a fairly soft free inside the 20 to extend the lead to 4-2 after 13 minutes. Yet another silly foul by midleton leads to another close range free tapped over 5-2. Magpies finding it hard to get out of their half. Eventually we get upfield and shoot narrowly wide and from the kick out we send another convertible shot wide. The misses could prove costly. Fermoy are not without their misses either and have squandered a few easy chances. Then the badly needed goal arrives through some great off the shoulder running and Sadhbh rattles the net 5 points to 1-2.

Fermoy respond with another point to edge in front after 20 minutes. A soft free yet again sees Fermoy miss the opportunity to stretch the lead but it goes wide. Then it's Midleton’s turn to score from a pointed free by Sadhbh. Sadhbh adds another to stretch one point in front. Fermoy miss another chance but then disaster strikes when they rattle the net from close range. Another narrow miss by Lucy sees the home side 2 to the good but great work by Viv and Ella sees Lucy hit one from a difficult angle. One point in it now with 2 minutes to half time. Great defending by Midleton’s Kate Sull, Megan, Emma, Claudia and Lucy has kept Fermoys lead to the minimum and at half time it's all to play for here in Fermoy. The home side lead by 1-6 to 1-5.

Second half starts in sunny Fermoy gaa grounds and the wind has gotten a bit stronger in the home sides favor. Fermoy attack from the off and miss a scoreable chance. However from the kick out Fermoy win a free and tap it over to go 2 in front. Midleton attack From the kickout and following some great running and passing win a free for a foul but it's sent narrowly wide.  Fermoy attack and send the ball to the net from long range and now go into a relatively commanding lead of 2-7 to 1-5.  5 minutes gone. Fermoy's number 12 doing a lot of damage and scores an unchallenged point. 6 points in front now and a big hill to climb now for the magpies but we have been in this position before. Midleton respond with Claire, Molly Lucy and the busy bee herself Vivienne all driving forward and win a free in front of the post and this is sent over my molly. Great play by the magpies sees a goalbound shot by Lucy Wallace rattle the crossbar to go over. 2-8 to 1-6. Midleton keep pressing but miss an easy Free and making life difficult for themselves.

Megan Wallace sends one over 2-8 to 1-7 all to play for and a goal either way will be decisive. Unfortunately it goes Fermoy's way. Hard to see us come back from this. 3-8 to 1-7. Midleton keep pressing and a great save by Fermoy keeper keeps a certain goal out. Fermoy miss a free to keep us in it. 11 minutes left and you would think the Magpies need a goal. Yet another point blank save by the Fermoy keeper thwarts midleton and the misses are proving very costly now. Fermoy send another over to stretch it to 3-9 to 1-7. Then magic happens and after a great run by Lucy Wallace and Sorcha,  Lucy Cashman blasts to the roof of the net. Fermoy respond with a point to leave it 3-10 to 2-7. 22 minutes gone in the second half. Rachel ryan has a great chance to goal but sends it narrowly over the bar. Megan Wallace hits one over to reduce the margin to 3-10 to 2-10. Times running out now have we a goal in us? Subs Denise Collins and Rachel Ryan tried hard to drive on too but Unfortunately it’s not to be as the final whistle goes. But lots of positives to take on the day with lots of first teamers missing so well done girls and on we move to round 2.

Upcoming Fixtures;

26/03/2026 Junior League v Inch Rovers in Killeagh at 7.45pm

29/3/2026 Intermediate League v Rosscarbery in Clonmult at 3pm
