St Catherine's Notes (26th Feb)
- Feb 26,2026
We might just see the competitive start to the season this weekend
There are a whole series of events scheduled for the three days and nights of the upcoming weekend. Where does one start?
Well, Conna Drama Group bring ‘ Boeing Boeing’ to the stage for the first of four productions, this weekend and next, starting on Friday night coming, February 27th. Tickets will be available at the door. A number of well-known local names adorning the cast and an event well worthy of your support.
Just down the road, St Catherine’s Camogie Club will be hoping for a good turnout for the Cheltenham preview night at The Winners’ Enclosure. Doors opening at 7pm also incorporating raffle and music. No doubt people could do with the tips and listen to the informative views of the assembled panel. All of whom know their stuff. No bluffers here. In fairness, Johnny Hurley has served the GAA club well over the years and is a previous U11 winning hurling captain. We won’t say when. Mickey O’Connor probably opted out pre Minor. But has done well for himself and is now attached to the Henry de Bromhead stable in Waterford. Lisa O’Neill is a well-known pundit on RTE and has a Cheltenham victory aboard Tiger Roll to her credit. Jane Mangan hardly needs an introduction. While MC for the night will be Ken Whelan. Hopefully all goes well.
East Cork Scór na bPáistí semi-finals are on the agenda for Lisgoold community hall on Saturday. All events indoors. Weather shouldn’t be a factor.
Moving outdoors mightn’t be as straight forward. Last Sunday’s proposed division 2 U16 football league tie above in Na Piarsaigh didn’t take place. Falling foul of the weather conditions. Verdict known mid-week. Of course that will have to be refixed. Also heading up northside for the equivalent hurling league towards the end of April. Hopefully the juvenile season will be up and running after this weekend. Off to Killeagh on Saturday evening for the opening tie in division 1 Rebel Óg East U14 football league. Then the opening fixture in division 2 of the East Cork Junior football league v Aghada is planned to come up in Ballynoe on Sunday at 12 noon.
Throw two very important intercounty league games into the mix as well. Cork now in Nowlan Park for round 5 in the national hurling league. Also facing a difficult task away to Derry in division 2 of the national football league. Coming as it does after what was probably the Rebels best performance of the current campaign when registering a hard-earned win over a good Meath team at a well-supported Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon last. Into the first weekend of March and both Cork teams remain unbeaten. You can’t do much better than that. Keep it going.
Scór na bPáistí semi-finals
St Catherines will have 11 entries in the divisional Scór na bPáistí semi-finals this coming weekend. Hurling team qualifiers coming in figure dancing, solo singing, recitation, ballad group, novelty, sean nós dance, instrumental music and question time. Football team getting through in solo instrumental music, novelty and question time. Unfortunately those representing the camogie club didn’t advance. But their names are noted purely for administrative purposes. No luck for Sara O’Connell with her rendition of ‘Come my little son’ in the solo singing. Amelia Kerins competed in the recitation while Aoife Hamill was in solo music. Camogie club quiz team of Oisín Ryan, Conor Buggy, Daithi Ryan and Rory Pyne didn’t get through either. Just two hurling club entries didn’t progress. Aoife Kearney in solo music and Caoimhe Geary in solo dance. No luck for Padraig Barry with ‘Oró, Sé Do Bheatha 'Bhaile’ in the solo singing for the football club. Charlie Noonan with ‘The winning goal’ didn’t advance in the recitation. Football ballad group didn’t make it through. Performing ‘I’ll tell me ma’ and ‘Killeagh’. In that group were Sarah Buckner, Diana Santos and Sadhbh Milbourne. Making their exit were Fionn Crowley, Padraig Barry and Jack Crowley in instrumental music. Point being they all tried their utmost. But were unlucky on the night. We thank them for their efforts and sure as the saying goes ‘you can’t win them all!’ Best of luck to all competitors this weekend.
