Darragh McCarthy

Today is a day of reflection and remembrance as we mark Darragh’s first anniversary. We remember Darragh. Our friend and teammate and the great times we shared both on and off the field. His spirit, friendship, and presence will always remain a part of our team and our lives. Darragh will be forever in our thoughts. Today we also keep his family in our prayers, his parents Niall and Aoife, his sister Aisling, his brother Niall Óg, Sophie and all of his extended Family and Friends , as we think especially of them at this time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

A message from the McCarthy Family:

From the moment Darragh picked up a hurley it became an integral part of his identity. I can still see the smile on his face when he played his first match for Midleton (probably U7), Being part of a Midleton team and uniting in black and white was to give Darragh a sense of pride and place for the rest of his days on Earth. Darragh's age group were a quiet bunch of lads but a stoic, formidable force. They won most counties at their age grade including the double at U12. Darragh's medals are eye watering, 12 Counties, an U16 Munster with East Cork and finally a Higher Education Junior All Ireland. The love and support during Darragh's arrangements was a comfort. To see the Church engulfed in black and white like a blanket up over Darragh is something we will hold in our hearts forever... As we approach a year take a look at Darragh's history with Midleton GAA. Forever a Magpie.

RED FM COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1

MIDLETON 0-21 FR. O’NEILLS 0-15

Sunday March 8th 2026

There was an historic occasion at Park South on Sunday morning as we marked our return to Division 1 of the County Hurling league with the first ever game to be played on the sand based pitch against neighbours Fr. O’Neills in front of a fine crowd on a lovey day for hurling.

It was the visitors who got off to the better start and led by 0-4 to 0-2 after ten minutes, with our white flags coming from Conor Lehane and Mikey Finn.

O’Neills increased their lead to three (0-10 to 0-7) by the 20 minute mark with our points in that period coming from Conor Lehane (2), Mikey Finn, Killian McDermott and Davy Cremin.

Despite playing against a strong breeze, we kept in the game and by the half-time whistle the margin was two, 0-12 to 0-10 in favour of the visitors with our points in the final ten minutes of the opening period coming from Mikey Finn (2) and Aaron Mulcahy.

Fr. O’Neill’s stretched their lead to three at the start of the second-half but we soon upped the ante and points from Aaron Mulcahy, Mikey Finn (2), Pa White and Cormac Beausang saw us lead by two (0-15 to 0-13) after 42 minutes.

By the 51st minute the score was Midleton 0-18 Fr. O’Neills 0-14 after points from Mikey Finn (2) and Davy Cremin and we saw it out well from here with another pointed free from Mikey Finn and two lovely points from sub Conor Morley to see us win out by six points, 0-21 to 0-15 in the end.

Next up is a meeting with St. Finbarrs in Midleton on Sunday, March 22nd.

Facilities

Sunday morning last at Park South saw our first game on our new sand based pitch, it was a landmark moment for the club and a proud step forward for everyone involved. The weather was great, the surface held up brilliantly and a fine crowd was present to witness our senior hurlers defeat Fr O Neills in the first round of the League.

A huge thank‑you to everyone who made the project a reality—from those who drove the planning and construction to the volunteers who gave their time, tools, and energy along the way. Your commitment has transformed the grounds and given our members and teams a place to be proud of.

Thanks as well to everyone who helped prepare the pitch for its debut game; Will O Shea of Boss Farm Machinery who supplied and installed our new Robotic mower and also for lining the pitch, Barry for the drone footage, the Facilities committee , and all who worked behind the scenes to make the day run smoothly.

This new Floodlight pitch is a milestone for the club, and this first game was just the beginning. In the coming weeks we will see further improvements onsite with the tarring of some walkways and the installation of Solar lights.
