EAST CORK DIVISION 2 FOOTBALL LEAGUE, THURSDAY FEBRUARY 26th in KILLEAGH
Glenbower Rovers 2-06, Dungourney 0-08
Having been on the receiving end of a 24-point drubbing from the same opposition in Junior A Football Championship last August (our lowest point of a low year), it was heartening to begin 2026 with a deserved, battling win against our neighbours. Triple cause for celebration, then. Firstly, to get the match played at all was a minor miracle, considering the state of all pitches in the lead up to this fixture, with no likelihood of finding an alternative venue should our “field of dreams” be unplayable! Secondly, over the course of 48 hours, a total of 38 players togged out and all played in our combined Division 2 and Division 3 panels, which is very encouraging. And finally, two wins in those matches will surely give management and players some confidence that the football pendulum swing may be starting on an upcurve once again. Key factors in this win were an opportunist goal from Paudie Mackey in the first half, excellent kick-outs from cúl báire Fionn Brennan, outstanding displays from young Cian O’Riordan, Jack Coleman and John Ogbebor, and a spirited finish in the final ten minutes. Having had the greater share of possession, yet trailing by one point on the scoreboard, we finished strongly, with Robbie Treacy’s late goal securing the points. Well done to all involved, our next fixture sees us hosting Midleton on Friday March 13th in Killeagh at 1915 hrs.
Team: Fionn Brennan, Barry Motherway, George Walsh Wallace, Padraig Leahy. Cian O’Riordan, Ciaran Leahy, Jack Coleman, Brendan Delaney, Dara Motherway, Keane Budds, Jamie Fogarty, Eoin Brenner, Paudie Mackey, John Ogbebor, Dave Buckley, Darragh O’Connor, Robbie Treacy, Pierce Geary, Andrew Leahy.
EAST CORK DIVISION 3 FOOTBALL LEAGUE, SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28th in KILLEAGH
Glenbower Rovers 2-11, Carrigtwohill 2-07
Our second football team got their first win of the season at home to Carrigtwohill on the last day of February. Paudie Mackey raised our green flag in the first half, and he was aided by a brace of points from Fionn Brennan and one from the evergreen John O’Connor. Johnno, 28 years after making his adult debut for Killeagh, added two more in the second half, while Michael O’Donovan’s fine goal on 48 minutes gave us a 2-10 to 1-05 lead. Carrig closed the gap in the final quarter but excellent performances from Dave Ogbebor and Eoin Roche in defence were key to us holding on for victory. Next up we travel to play Ballinacurra on Sunday March 15th at 11.30 a.m.
Team: Philip O’Neill, Conor Burns, Eamonn Byrne, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Eoin Roche, Dave Ogbebor, Michael O’Donovan, Fionn Brennan, Dylan Coleman, Richie Long, John O’Connor, Diarmuid Buckley, Darragh O’Connor, Paudie Mackey, James Fitzgerald, Ciaran O’Rourke, Cian O’Riordan, Paul Keniry, Dale McMahon, Ian Landers, Segdae Barry, Conor Meade.
EAST CORK DIVISION 2 HURLING LEAGUE, THURSDAY MARCH 5th in KILLEAGH
Killeagh 2-06, Youghal 0-14
Our first super weekend of hurling with four fixtures in three days, began with a narrow loss at home to Youghal on Thursday evening last, March 5th. We got off to a flying start with a goal from Dale McMahon on 6 minutes, and early points from Davy Kelleher, Kieran Lane and Pierce Geary gave us a 1-03 to 0-02 lead. Youghal dominated the second quarter to leave the sides level at half time – 1-03 to 0-06. Dave Ogbebor and Aaron Walsh (2) added further points while Davy Kelleher’s goal on 45 minutes gave us the lead, but Youghal finished with a numerical advantage and a two-point score advantage at reiteoir Ben Daly’s final whistle. This team will play Castlemartyr next in Killeagh on Monday March 23rd at 2000 hrs.
Team: Colm Crowley, Aidan Morrison, Conor Meade, Ben Budds, Dylan Coleman, Brian Collins, Barry Motherway, Pierce Geary, Dave Ogbebor, Eoin Roche, Kieran Lane, Davy Kelleher, Aaron Walsh, Ciaran O’Rourke, Dale McMahon, Darragh O’Connor, Tadhg O’Connor, Dermot Motherway.
RED FM DIVISION 7 HURLING LEAGUE, SATURDAY MARCH 7th in KILLEAGH
Killeagh 0-14, Barryroe 1-25
We welcomed Barryroe to Páirc Uí Chinnéide for the first time in the Red FM Division 7 Hurling League on Saturday afternoon. Our opponents were sharper and faster than us, and their scoring return was impressive. However, our team featured five of last year’s minor team in defence and midfield, and this is a big step up for these young players, who will undoubtedly benefit from the experience. Barryroe led by 0-11 to 0-06 at half time, with Dan Landers and Dinny Walsh sharing equally in our scoring, although our eight wides contributed to our difficulties. The second half saw Barryroe consolidate their lead with the wind at their backs, with Dan adding five further points, along with scores from Richie Long, Matthew Murphy and Padraig Leahy. A late goal from the visitors gave them a double-score win at Michael Carey’s final whistle. We travel to Togher to play another - perhaps more famous than Barryroe - blue outfit, the mighty Barrs, on Saturday March 21st at 1500 hrs.
Team: Fionn Murphy, Mikey Fitzgerald, Allen Keniry, Oran Cunningham, Fionn Brennen, Jack Coleman, Cian O’Riordan, John Ogbebor, Sean Walsh, Matthew Murphy, Jamie Fogarty, Dinny Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Dan Landers, Padraig Leahy, Tadhg Considine, Richie Long, Conor Burns, Dan Smiddy, Aidan Morrison. Pierce Geary.
RED FM DIVISION 1 HURLING LEAGUE, SUNDAY MARCH 8th in KILLEAGH
Killeagh 0-18, Douglas 4-26
Our return to Division 1 league hurling was a rude awakening on Sunday morning, as we were well beaten in all areas of the pitch, particularly in a discomforting opening thirty minutes where Douglas scythed through our defence like the proverbial knife through butter on multiple occasions. We conceded two quick goals, it was 2-06 to 0-00 after 12 minutes, and by half time it was 4-13 to 0-08. Worringly, Douglas had scored seventeen times from play, while we had three frees from Ryan McCarthy, two from play from Andrew Leahy, and one each from David Buckley, Evan Lane and Brendan Delaney. The second half saw our defence tighten up considerably and Evan Lane impress with three additional points from the midfield area, but Douglas were always in control and able to score from all distances and angles. A chastening morning, with a trip to county champions Sarsfields on Sunday March 22nd at 11.30 a.m. next on the agenda!
Team: Fionn Murphy, Keane Budds, George Walsh Wallace, Robbie Treacy, Evan Lane, Gary Leahy, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Rob Sinclair, Ciaran Leahy, Brendan Delaney, Andrew Leahy, Shane Smiddy, Colm Leahy, Ryan McCarthy, Dave Buckley, Pa O’Brien, Jamie Fogarty, Mikey Fitzgerald.
EAST CORK DIVISION 4 HURLING LEAGUE, SUNDAY MARCH 8th in WATERGRASSHILL
Watergrasshil 0-16, Killeagh 1-13
After three disappointing losses at home, our fourth team in action over a busy three days finally salvaged our first point with a battling performance away to Watergrasshill. Harry Donegan was our goalscorer, with Padraic Carroll, Diarmuid Buckley, Dermot Motherway, Dave Ogbebor, Darragh O’Connor and Jack Merkushev also on the scoresheet. This match also marked Shane Kearney’s welcome return to the playing fields after sustaining serious injury while on peacekeeping duty in Lebanon. Well done Shane! All in all, over the four games, a total of 68 different players played for Killeagh, so while the results may not have been what we wished for, the number of players involved gives hope!
Team: Colm Crowley, Paul Keniry, Tadhg O’Connor, Cullen Ryan Hyde, Eamonn Byrne, John O’Connor, Ian O’Keeffe, Dave Ogbebor, Diarmuid Buckley, Jack Merkushev, Padraic Carroll, Dermot Motherway, Darragh O’Connor, Harry Donegan, James Fitzgerald, Shane Kearney, Darragh Sheehan, Ben Budds, Ian Landers, Dale McMahon, Ciaran O’Rourke, Segdae Barry.
CONGRATULATIONS
Firstly, to Barry Walsh, who at just 19 years of age, is making quite a name for himself! Not content with winning a penalty and scoring a cracking goal on his Cork senior league debut in Nowlan Park last Sunday, March 1st, he followed it up with a brace of points in another impressive display in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday last, where he looked very comfortable in the company of fathaigh cosúil le Will O’Donoghue, Cian Lynch agus Gearóid Hegarty! May you have many years of success in the red of Cork and the green of Killeagh, Barry!
Secondly, to a young man setting out on a possible future career path behind the camera! Finn Murphy is responsible for the high-quality photos included in this week’s notes, and if you want to see the range of his action shots over the weekend, please follow Finn on Instagram @finnmurphy2012. Go Finn!
Finally, our Tráth na gCeist Scór team have represented our club loyally over many years and did so again in this year’s County Final in Páirc Uí Chinnéide on Thursday February 26th. Captaen na fóirne, young Denis Barry, was ably assisted by Eddie Leahy, Matt Hurley and AN Other! Finishing second to current All Ireland Champions Millstreet was no mean feat! Here’s three of the teasing 80 questions asked on the night – answers on a cabbage leaf to one of our Lotto boxes by St Stephen’s Day please!
- Apart from Nemo Rangers, which two other Cork clubs have won the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Title?
- Cén contae a d’imir i gcoinne Corcaigh i gcluiche Cheannais Peil na h-Éireann i 1945?
- How many colours are on the flag of South Africa?
SHANE O’CONNELL RIP
Our neighbours and friends in the parish of Ballynoe and Conna, the heartland of St. Catherine’s, were stunned last weekend with the sudden passing of one of their laochra móra, Shane O’Connell. Shane was an exceptionally talented hurler who wore with pride and distinction the colours of the Saints, along with St. Colman’s College, Cork, Imolilly and UCC. With his beloved UCC he is one of a select number of players to have won three Fitzgibbon Cup medals in the glory days of the 1980s, from 1986 to 1988. He was hugely involved in all of what makes the GAA the beating heart of every community on this island and beyond – as a player, administrator and “rounder-upper” of players of all ages and abilities, a man to be found at the pitch at any time doing his bit. Shane’s loss will be felt deeply by all in St. Catherine’s and in his parish and beyond, but most especially by his wife Imelda and sons Fionn and Diarmuid, all three of whom are also hugely committed St. Catherine’s stalwarts. We send our deepest sympathies to Imelda, Fionn, Diarmuid and the O’Connell and Fouhy families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh tú, Shane!
