BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.
BUSY TIMES ON ALL FRONTS.! Despite the bad weather we had a rake of games last weekend and the sand based Pynes Pitch came into it’s own. This weekend coming we have our three hurling teams in action in the Co. SHL, JHL 1 and JHL 4 in East Cork. The GAA Congress was held last weekend also with our 42nd President being picked. This was a ‘Meeting Week’ with Club Monday, County board Tuesday and East Cor Board Wednesday. Plenty activity coming up on and off the field including the ladies Music Bingo in Rathcormac and a Big Breakfast in Bartlemy.
Junior Footballers continue winning start to league
Our junior footballers recorded their second win in their league against Midleton last Friday night. Well done to the 22 lads who togged out on the night, and it is great to see a plethora of U21 players gaining experience here. Conor O'Riordan was our scorer in chief, able assisted by Rudi Gharib, goalkeeper Ben Hogan, Seamus Ahern, Ryan O'Callaghan and Mattie Kenny. Despite going two points down early on, our lads showed great composure to stem the tide and then overcome the opposition. It was great to see that the standard and focus remained as we introduced seven subs during the second half. Building this experience and confidence will stand to us as the year progresses. Final Score Bride Rovers 2 11 Midleton 0 6

MINOR FOOTBALL. Bride Rovers defeated by Fermoy 1-2 to 0-4 in the first round of the Rebel Óg North Div 1 football league. In the first game of the year in Pynes pitch the rain and the wind made it difficult conditions for football. The first half goal by Fermoy proved the difference in the low scoring affair, however the Rovers fought back to bring the game back level late in the second half. Both teams had further goal scoring opportunities during the game, but it was a late point from a free pushed that Fermoy over the line. Team:
A. Kelleher, É. Lyons, D. Hurley, B. Sweeney, M. Hynes, O. Harris, J. Lynch, F. O’Driscoll, G. Quirke, T. Cronin, S. O’Dowd, M. Kenny, D. Kearney, D. O’Farrell, D. Keating

SENIOR HURLING
On Sunday last, our senior hurlers played host to St. Marys of Clonmel, the home club of Jamie Peters. Persistent rain and a strong wind made playing conditions very difficult, but the Sand based pitch in Pynes was playable and this is a huge asset to the club. Referee Simon Stokes got the game underway at 11.30am as we played against the wind in the first half. Adam Walsh had the opening score from a pointed free before the visitors hit 4 points without reply. It was noticeable how hard our team was working against the elements to work the ball up the field and we were rewarded for this hard work with points from Shane O Connor and Ronan O Connell. A great turn over by Ronan in front of the St. Marys goal, quick pass to Adam Walsh who showed great skill in controlling the ball before blasting to the net. St. Marys added another point before half time.
Half time: Bride Rovers 1-03 St. Marys 0-05
Liam Collins and Paddy O Flynn were introduced at half time. By now both teams seem to be handling the conditions a bit better so the scores came more frequently. Points on the resumption from Kieran Kearney (2), Ronan O Connell, Adam Walsh (free), Conleith Ryan & Paddy O Flynn extended our lead over the Clonmel side. All 25 players that had togged out for the game were introduced at various stages of the second half. Further points from Paddy O Flynn, Shane O Connor, Conor O Riordan, Ronan O Connell ensured a Bride Rovers win on a scoreline of: Bride Rovers 1-18 St. Marys 0-13.
Due to the inclement weather we had a jersey change at half time, so while we started the game in our traditional Green, White & Gold Jersey, we finished the game wearing our alternative White Jersey. Not a first I am sure !

COULD YOU GIVE AN HOUR? We know that in today’s world everyone is busy as the pace of life is increasing all the time. Giving a little time to the community or to voluntary organisations was normal for most people in the past but it’s getting harder nowadays. In Bride Rovers GAA Club we are constantly seeking new volunteers to lend a hand. Yes we play and promote Gaelic games but we need people to help in a variety of ways. If you would like to get involved as a hurler, or footballer, camogie player or ladies footballer just contact any Club Member. Training and coaching of teams of all ages can be very rewarding. All volunteers will be provided with training, safeguarding courses and Garda Vetting obligations. Perhaps you have IT or Communications Skills- these are so important. Could you sell a few Club Lotto Tickets a week or help out with the arrangements when we host big games? All are welcome and even if you can give just an hour a week it would be appreciated. Can you paint, help with keeping the pitches and grounds tidy or maybe you are interested in Irish music, song and dance and might like to participate in the GAA’s SCOR competitions. They say ‘many hands make light work’ so we wont overburden anyone but the more the merrier.

GAA CONGRESS. The GAA’s Annual Congress was held in Croke Park last Friday and Saturday. Bride Rovers members Daniel Lane and john Arnold attended. The highlight of the Congress was the Presidential election on Friday night. Derek Kent from the Taghmon-Camross Club in Wexford got a whopping169 votes in defeating Tippperary’s Ger Ryan and Sligo’s John Murphy. Derek will now serve as Uachtarain Tofa(President Elect) for a year until this time next year. Then he will become the GAA’s 42nd president and succeed Jarlath Burns in the Office to serve from 2027 until 2030. The Motion to change the All Ireland Final dates was withdrawn. The Tempo Club from Fermanagh proposed to restore the All Ireland Minor Finals to the days of the Senior Finals but this was heavily defeated.
MUSICAL BINGO NIGHT. On March 14th the ladies Club are having a Musical Bingo night in the Rathcormac Inn>teams are €50 each so please support this fundraiser.
SHANE O CONNELL. The GAA community in his native parish and indeed all over Cok were shocked and saddened at the weekend on learning of the sudden death of Shane O Connell. A native of Boulta in Ballynoe Shane was one of an outstanding generation of St Catherine’s GAA players who graced the playing fields of Imokilly and Cork. Shane was a brilliant player with his beloved Club and also wore the Cork jersey. Strong, fearless and skilful Shane was truly a hero on the Gaelic pitch. He continued to serve his Club in several different roles down the years. We in Bride Rovers extend our sympathy to Imelda, Fionn, Diarmuid, Nuala and Nora, his parents in law Ted and Imelda and all his many, many friends and relations. Rest in peace Shane-one of the best. We also extend sympathy to the family of the late Gretta Power (nee Flynn) formerly of Castlelyons -Gretta was wife of the late Waterford and Tallow goalminder, Ned Power.
