Glenville GAA Quiz Night Draws 27 Teams in Major Juvenile Fundraiser Success
Strong community backing as packed Kades Kounty event supports expanding underage section
Glenville GAA’s Multimedia Quiz Night and Grand Raffle proved a tremendous success on Friday night last in Kades Kounty, with 27 teams taking part in one of the club’s best-supported social fundraisers in recent years.
From early in the evening, it was clear the event had captured the imagination of the local community. Tables filled quickly, competitive spirits rose and the lively mix of questions ensured there was something for everyone. The atmosphere was energetic throughout, with plenty of friendly rivalry and good humour adding to the occasion.
A special word of thanks is due to quizmaster Colm Lougheed, who kept proceedings moving smoothly from start to finish. His sharp delivery, well-balanced question rounds and steady hand on the microphone ensured the night flowed seamlessly, while his good humour kept the competitive edge firmly in the spirit of the occasion. The success of the evening owed much to the time and preparation he put into compiling and delivering the quiz.
The event was organised in support of Glenville’s expanding Juvenile Section. The club is currently fielding teams at every underage grade from U12 to U18 — with two teams at each level — alongside two U21 sides, three adult teams and a thriving U6–U11 nursery. The scale of participation continues to grow, and fundraising initiatives such as this play a crucial role in supporting coaching, equipment, pitch maintenance and overall player development.
A major highlight of the night was the extensive raffle, featuring 43 prizes generously donated by local businesses, club members and supporters. The variety of prizes reflected both the generosity and the character of the parish — combining luxury, practicality and a touch of local humour.
The top prize of a luxury five-star stay in the Lyrath Estate, Kilkenny was won by Jean Linehan. Other principal cash prize winners were Emer Fennell (€200), David Barry (€100), Caroline Cannon (€100) and Claire Callanan (€100).
Voucher prizes were won by Callum O’Mahony (Rathcormac Tyres), Mairead Kennedy (Tirlán Glenville and Murphy’s Rock lunch voucher), Brendan Duffy (Centra Watergrasshill) and David Quirke (€50 Glenville Eggs). Three €25 Roca Sports vouchers went to John Fenton, Kerrie Lawton and Josh Cooke.
Among the many additional winners were Eva Kelly (handcrafted coffee table), Charlie Doolan (Alan Busteed fitness programme), Alan Long (two maths grinds), Ruth Good (Therapy Hub treatment voucher), Willie John Manley (two bottles of wine), Sean Collins (two bottles of whiskey and five slices of ham), Billy Ryan (Redbreast whiskey) and Mary Doolan (bottle of Hennessy).
Eamonn Counihan enjoyed a double success on the night, winning two prizes — including a bag of “Kerry” turf. Some suggested the turf showed remarkable loyalty in returning home, sparing Cork the awkward task of minding it. Hopefully, it will prove to be the only thing Kerry wins this year.
Other winners included Seamus Roche (Glenville/Watergrasshill GAA history book), Liam Cahill (bag of spuds), Karen O’Mahony (air fryer), Louise O’Sullivan (Ann Summers voucher), Conor Gowen (large umbrella), Tommy Bowe (bottle of whiskey), Eamon Fitzgerald (bottle of Jameson), Michelle O’Brien (annual club lotto ticket), Catherine O’Leary (handcrafted clock), Paul Ryan (€30 cash and club woollie hat), Jack Counihan (Redbreast whiskey), Donagh McHugh (honey hamper), Yvonne Sheehan (signed Cork Senior Hurling jersey), Jean Linehan (hamper), Will Sheehy (bottle of wine), Antoinette O’Mahony (ten club lotto tickets) and Oisin Dunne (two pairs of club socks).
The club extends its sincere thanks to all sponsors and donors for their generosity, to those who sourced prizes and sold tickets, to the organising committee who coordinated the event, and to the volunteers who ensured the smooth running of the night. Special thanks are also due to Kades Kounty for hosting and supporting the event.
Speaking after the event, Chairperson Peter Curtin said the turnout was a testament to the strength of the club and the wider community.
“To see 27 teams in the room on a Friday night is a fantastic endorsement of the work being done in the club. Our Juvenile Section continues to grow year on year, and nights like this make a real difference in helping us provide the best possible environment for our young players. We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported, donated prizes, bought tickets or helped in any way. It shows once again that Glenville GAA is about far more than football — it’s about community.”
All proceeds from the Quiz Night and Raffle will go directly towards supporting the club’s expanding Juvenile Section as preparations continue for the coming season.
Pat McHugh Cup Final & League Opener
Glenville 3-09
Cobh 2-06
Glenville got their competitive season off to the perfect start with a dramatic victory over Cobh in a game that doubled as both the opening league fixture and the inaugural Pat McHugh Cup Final.
Played in Glenville, the contest was a tight and tense affair throughout. Defences were well on top in the opening half and the sides went in level at the break on 0-3 apiece.
Josh Cooke struck a crucial goal early in the second half to edge Glenville in front, but Cobh responded strongly and with ten minutes remaining the home side trailed by two points.
The response was decisive. Following excellent build-up play and sustained pressure, Colin O’Keeffe netted twice in the closing stages to swing the game firmly in Glenville’s favour and secure both league points and the Pat McHugh Cup.
It was a fitting and spirited performance to mark a final played in honour of a great Glenville clubman, and an encouraging start to the campaign for players and management alike.
Minor Football League – Glenville 2-8 St. Colmcille’s 1-8
Glenville’s Minor footballers opened their season with a hard-earned three-point victory over St. Colmcille’s in extremely difficult conditions on Sunday afternoon.
With wind and rain making handling and shooting a real challenge, this was always going to be a test of character rather than free-flowing football. To their credit, the Glenville lads showed great determination and composure throughout, responding well to pressure and taking their goal chances when they arose.
Scores were hard won on both sides, but Glenville’s work rate, defensive discipline and ability to battle through the elements proved decisive. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, the home side finished strongly to secure a deserved 2-8 to 1-8 victory.
A positive start to the campaign for the panel and management, with plenty to build on in the weeks ahead.
U12 Footballers Show Great Spirit in Season Opener
Glenville’s U12 footballers got their season underway with an away trip to Mallow at the weekend, with 17 young players togging out for the first game of the year.
While the result may not have gone their way, there was plenty to be encouraged by. The Glenville lads showed tremendous determination throughout, continuing to work hard and support one another even when the game became challenging.
There were some excellent passages of play, with good teamwork and effort on display across the pitch. At this early stage of the season, attitude and application are key, and this group demonstrated both in abundance.
Sincere thanks to Mallow for hosting the fixture and to all the parents who travelled and supported the team. With commitment like this, there is plenty to look forward to in the months ahead.
U11s Impress with Teamwork Against Mallow
Glenville’s U11s were also in action against Mallow, putting in a very encouraging performance.
The emphasis at this level is on development and enjoyment, and both were clearly evident on the day. The lads produced some excellent passages of play, showing growing confidence on the ball and, most importantly, strong teamwork throughout.
It was heartening to see the players working hard for each other from start to finish, with plenty of positive moments to build on as the season progresses.
Thanks to Mallow for facilitating the game and to the parents for their continued support of the team.
