UP AND RUNNING

EAST CORK DIVISION 3 FOOTBALL LEAGUE, SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15th in PILMORE

Glenbower Rovers 0-08, Glenville 2-08

Our opening match of 2026 was an entertaining affair – a Division 3 football league fixture on a dry but windswept Pilmore pitch on Sunday last, February 15th, with Valentine’s Day behind us for another year! Ar dtús, some thank you’s! To Glenville, for contributing to a sporting game, played in the right spirit! To reiteoir Jim Daly, beginning his 29th season i lár na páirce, a mighty achievement! And to our friends and neighbours in St. Ita’s for allowing us the use of their pitch and changing facilities when none of our own pitches were available – we appreciate very much the gesture! To the game itself – we had the proverbial mix of youth and experience, although some of those with age on their side were marking their return after many years or their debut for Glenbower Rovers after a hiatus from GAA activity. Congratulations especially to James Fitzgerald who capped off a fine performance on his return with a lovely first-half point, to Eamonn Byrne for an excellent shift at wing-back, and to Harry Donegan for bringing his West-Cork-honed fielding skills to a new audience at this side of the county. Our midfield duo of Harry and stalwart Kieran Lane, with a combined age touching four score years, acquitted themselves very well against the youth all round them!

Our youngest player Fionn Brennan had the honour of scoring the opening point of 2026, a fine wind-assisted long-distance score, while Paudie Mackey hit the post shortly after when it could just as easily have been a goal. Glenville then got on top and raised two green flags on 6 and 20 minutes, which pushed them into a 2-03 to 0-02 lead (Paudie had added our second point from a free on 12 minutes). A strong closing ten saw us reduce the gap to three at half time with further points from Fionn, a brace from Paudie, and James’s closing score. Against the wind in the second half, we improved our control when we had possession, ach i gcoinne na gaoithe bhí sé deacair scóranna a fháil! Diarmuid Buckley’s fine point and Paudie’s fourth were our only scores as Glenville maintained their lead to the final whistle. Well done to the full panel! Next up is another home fixture where we host Carrigtwohill on Saturday 28th February at 1630 hrs, while our Division 2 team open their campaign at home to Dungourney on Thursday 26th February at 1930 hrs.

Team: Colm Crowley, Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Dermot Motherway, Barry Motherway, Ben Budds, Eamonn Byrne, Harry Donegan, Kieran Lane, Dale McMahon, Fionn Brennan, Richard Coughlan, Diarmuid Buckley, Paudie Mackey, James Fitzgerald, Darragh Sheehan.

MORE CONGRATULATIONS

Our Healthy Clubs Ireland Lights Up bi-weekly walks have now concluded, having run from early January until February 11th. Thanks to everyone who participated and a míle buíochas to our dedicated Healthy Clubs Officer Liz Sinclair who organised and encouraged walkers and runners every night. A draw for a limited edition Kingfishr jersey was held for all who had been regular attendees, and the lucky winner was Megan O’Connor. A well-deserved prize which will no doubt be well-worn to all major events!

DILLON QUIRKE FOUNDATION SCREENING SUCCESS

Our Poc Fada proceeds from St. Stephen’s Day 2025 were allocated to a very worthy charity, the Dillon Quirke Foundation. Most readers will be aware of Dillon’s successes as a Tipperary minor, U20 and senior hurler, and his subsequent tragic passing on the hallowed turf of Semple Stadium in August 2022 while representing his beloved club Clonoutly-Rossmore in the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. Following his death, Dillon’s family established the Dillon Quirke Foundation to raise awareness of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). By providing Cardiac Screening to GAA clubs, the Foundation is aiming to protect young people in the future from the devastation of SADS. On Thursday last, the Dillon Quirke Foundation came to Killeagh and successfully screened 45 young players between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age. As a club we were thrilled to be able to offer this service to our juvenile players while also contributing our financial donation to this noble and worthy charity. An innovation like this crosses all club and county boundaries and makes a lasting contribution to communities everywhere. Well done to all involved from the Foundation and to those within Killeagh GAA who helped to arrange this vital event.
