Killeagh GAA Club Notes December 29th 2025
CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Nollaig 29, 2025

2026 AG TEACHT CHUGAINN
So here we are, at day 363 of the year that Killeagh (la la la la) became the official centre of the universe! The turkey and sprouts have well and truly been polished off at this stage I hope, and the post-Christmas planning for the year ahead is under way. Go n-éirÍ libh go léir sa bhliain seo chugainn. We wish all our members, supporters and friends in our community and around the world the very best for a fulfilling year ahead.

AN POC FADA  - LÁ IONTACH!
Bhí lá iontach againn ar Lá ‘le Stiofáin (Lá an Dreoilín) Dé hAoine seo caite. A record number of 114 teams participated in our Annual Poc Fada from Mount Uniacke to Killeagh, with ideal weather conditions and the going officially rated as “good to firm”. Scores were low (or at least the counting was!) with the usual debate about dropped shots, lost sliotars and yards gained. While the event was once again a great example of a fun community event for all, we would also like to alert everyone that we received a complaint of littering and some poor behaviour from a small number of participants during the event, and would ask that all participating in the 2026 and future iterations of the Poc Fada are at all times respectful of residents and their properties on the route.
To the winners: one of the highlights surely from 2025 was young Fitz from that band whose name I can’t remember adding to his “annus mirabilis” with the garnering of the prestigious Harry Harris trophy for the best family. Instead of Eddie and McGoo in his family, this time he added an elder Fitz (Ger) and a younger one (Cathal) but the result was the same as it has been all year for the ‘Fishrs: No. 1 at the finish line! This trophy has special significance for the Fitzgibbon family, as it commemorates the life of Harry Harris who participated in Poc Fadas past with his brothers-in-law Tomás and Ger. This unique bespoke trophy was commissioned by the Fitzgibbon family following Harry’s untimely passing, and beautifully hand crafted by another brother-in-law Eamonn Farrelly, who sadly passed away recently. Club Chairperson Brian Barry presented this trophy to the talented triumvirate, with Cathal taking on the captaincy and acceptance speech duties with aplomb!
Our adult men’s winners for the coveted Kennedy Cup were Andy Walsh, Cian Fogarty and Kieran Lane, with the cup being presented by Helen Kennedy and her grandchildren Hugo and Charlotte in the appropriately named hostelry on Main Street. Our adult women’s winners were Niamh Daly, Ríóna Abernethy and Laura Treacy, who became the inaugural recipients of the Aoibhe O’Connor Memorial Cup, which was presented by Aoibhe’s dad Johnno. Well done to both Helen and Johnno for their excellent speeches highlighting the importance of remembering those who are no longer with us, while encouraging as many people as possible of all ages and genders to stay involved in sporting and community activities for as long as possible.
Our under-age presentations had taken place earlier in the day with U12, U14 and U18 winners in both male and female categories. The full list of winners from the day is below. And now for the thanks – míle buíochas to all who came along to take part and contributed to a great day. A staggering total of €2871 (our highest ever charity Poc Fada collection) was raised for the Dillon Quirke Foundation. A special thank you to all those behind the scenes who ensured the successful running of the event – Ger and Donie, Mary and Mary, Len, Joe and Trish, and our stewards on the course, Richard, Eddie and Liam. A huge thank you also to the Byrne family for providing welcome refreshments on the route, adding a lovely personal touch to the day’s events. See you all on Saturday December 26th 2026, le cúnamh Dé!

2026 CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS – PART 1
Cork County Board’s magnificent master plan has been released, following on quickly and efficiently from the County Championship Draws and league scheduling which were finalised in mid-December. So now we know who our Senior A Hurling Championship opponents will be and where and when we will play them. A sense of “déjà vu all over again” about our group for the year ahead, as we will renew acquaintances with Fermoy (different venue from 2025) and Na Piarsaigh (same venue) while in between those two encounters, we play one of the main favourites for the Jim Forbes Cup, Erins Own. A quarter century since our last adult county hurling championship success (you know the line by now, “in ’01 up to senior, what a beautiful thing”), could this possibly be the year that we can get those three lads to write a new verse or song? We also now know our opponents and the weekend dates (subject to possible change) in the nine rounds of both the RED FM Hurling Leagues (Divisions 1 and 7) between March and June. And finally for now, we host the ECEC (East Cork El Classico) between parish friends and rivals Castlemartyr and Dungourney on SSSS (Super September Sunday Sixth)!
