Match Report

It’s fitting that we begin this week’s report with our final match report of the year featuring our “Team Of The Year”, our minors, and the usual outstanding account of matters inside the white lines by our “reporter of the year” Ger Geary! Well done lads, and a special thank you to Ger for keeping us all in the loop!

Rebel Óg East Minor Hurling League Final, Saturday December 6th 2025

Killeagh 4-19 Ballinora 3-19

The new astro in Park South, Midleton was the venue for the East Minor Division 1 Hurling Final on Saturday, 6th December. This match had been postponed repeatedly from its original date in early July. It was a very cold afternoon, with a very strong wind blowing from the town end. We won the toss and played with the elements.

We started brightly with 2 points from play from Ben, followed by an excellent goal from John Farquhar after a great pass from Andrew. Ben struck the next 4 points, 3 from placed balls, followed by 2 Ballinora points. John Farquhar hit a lovely point off his left before Ben pounced for a goal after the keeper parried a shot from John. Ballinora replied with 2 more points. Killeagh struck the next 5 in a row (2 from Cormac Deane, 1 each from Billy, John Ogbebor and Ben). Ballinora hit the next 2, before a point from Ben was followed by a superb goal from Cormac Delaney, after a great run and pass from Cormac Deane. Ballinora started to come more into the game. They scored 5 of the next 7 points, with our replies from Andrew and John Ogbebor, after a powerful run and finish. We went in at the break leading by 3-14 to 0-10.

Ballinora turned with the breeze, and it was tit for tat in the opening 12 minutes of the second half with two good scores from Andrew and a converted free from Ben responded to by 3 from Ballinora. A great team goal, finished by Cormac Delaney and further points from Ben & Cormac Delaney put us 16 clear, and seemingly in control with 48 minutes on the clock. However, we started to take wrong options with the ball, and we didn’t score again. Ballinora hit 3-4 unanswered to leave us leading by 3 going into added time. We managed to survive to win by 3. This brought an end to a memorable season for the minors. Joint captains Jack and Oran accepted the league trophy to bring the curtain down on 2025.

Squad: Adam Barry, Tadgh Considine, Oran Cunningham (JC), Rian O’Connor, Cian O’Riordan, Jack Coleman (JC), Cathal Brennan, Andrew Brenner (0-3), Alex Fogarty, John Ogbebor (0-2), Cormac Deane (0-2), Fionn Brennan, John Farquhar (1-1), Ben Geary (1-9, 0-4f, 1 65), Billy Guerin (0-1), Cormac Delaney (2-1), Jack Farquhar, Ronan O’Riordan.

“KILLEAGH LA-LA-LA-LA” – THE SPARK THAT LIT THE FLAME!

So once upon a time there wasn’t a band called Kingfshr and there wasn’t a song called Killeagh, believe it or not!! But there has been, for many a year, an adult hurling team in our little parish, and that now legendary “95 came promotion” line does have its roots in an actual event, when our Junior A team finally broke through the pain barrier and rose to Intermediate ranks. The year? 1995 of course! Genius songwriting young Fitz!! Anyway, the heroes of that magical day in Páirc Ui Chaoimh of October 22nd 1995, when the green of Killeagh beat the blue of Ballinhassig, recently had a 30-year reunion to reflect on that wonderful day and the full year-long campaign. (Digression: what odds on Killeagh meeting Ballinhassig in the Senior A Hurling Final in October 2026 down in the Super Valu?? Hopefully not the Slán Leat anyway!) Planning and organising was led by the elder Fitz (Ger) along with team-mates Damien Irwin, Kieran Scully and Mark Landers, who collectively orchestrated an intense campaign to ensure that all went well with the gathering. The Old Thatch was the venue on Friday December 5th and there was a mighty turnout of players and mentors, with family coming along to represent the deceased members, namely selectors James Foley and John Fitzgerald, rúnaí Liam Murphy and players Tomás Fitzgibbon and Brendan Walsh. (What would each of these proud Killeagh men have made of “Killeagh la-la-la-la”?). Framed photographs of the 1995 team were presented to all panellists and selectors on the nigh, including the remaining three members of the selection committee, Joe Fitzgerald, Pat Lynch and Seán O’Brien. Míle buíochas to JJ Fennelly, who, not for the first time, displayed extraordinary generosity in his sponsorship of these beautiful framed mementoes. A patron, not just a supporter, in the words of our uachtarán Ray, one of many excellent speakers on the night. Many thanks also to The Old Thatch who have always looked after us so well when requested, and to photographer Denis O’Flynn, whose photograph of the full group is included with this report. Well done to all involved! We need to plan now for the next line of the song “In ’01 up to senior, what a beautiful thing”. What’s the calendar looking like, Kingfshr??

POC FADA 2025

Even though the poor unfortunate bird that you’ll be dissecting on the 25th may be still trotting around oblivious to his or her impending doom, we still have to plan ahead to the day after! So the Annual Poc Fada, around since long before ’95, by the way, will take place along its usual route and at the usual time – Mount Uniacke to Killeagh on December 26th – with throw in for juveniles at 11.00 a.m. sharp and for adults at 12.00 noon. This year’s chosen charity will be the Dillon Quirke Foundation, no explanation needed! This is a BYO event – Bring Your Own Hurley, Sliotars and Team-Mates. And most importantly, if you are Under 18, you must Bring Your Own Adult! We need each group of juveniles to have at least one adult (wear a Hi-Viz if you can) to walk with and ahead of them on the route. While this is a great community and club event, we need to be mindful that we are on a public road and we need to take every precaution to ensure the safety of all, including other road users. See you all on the 26th!
