St Catherine's Notes (13th Nov)

Great night in Rochestown Park Hotel
An attendance of approximately 250 supporters began to gather from around 7pm onwards up in the second floor of the Killeshin Suite for what has now become known as the Juvenile GAA, Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football Association annual social on Friday evening last.
Special guest county Senior hurler Seamus Harnedy in a one-off brief question and answer series with Shane Fitzgerald, chairman Juvenile GAA Club, endeared himself to those present and it was interesting to hear him declare that newly names All-Star Ciaran Joyce from only over the road from him would be his toughest domestic opponent. Always having great time for ex-Tipperary star Padraic Maher. Proceedings moving on with chairperson Niamh Pyne presenting the football section. Camogie citations read by Anne Galvin. All medals on the night presented by Aoife Hurley, first club player to make a county ladies football panel and Oisín Fitzgerald, U20 county hurling panellist. I mean, who better than your own team manager Aidan Hickey then calling on the successful panel present who were winners of the division 2 Rebel Óg North U16 hurling league. Beating Fermoy in the decider back in mid-August. In fairness were decidedly unlucky to lose out to Carrigtwohill in the championship semi-final when based in the east. Fortunes not great at the outset. But went on to upset the form book all of three times. Finishing with a well-earned victory over Whitechurch in the division 2 Rebel Óg East U14 hurling championship. Only losing out to Clyda Rovers at county semi-final stage. It didn’t appear possible back in the spring. Team manager Martin O’Keeffe introduced us to the players.
Mixed fortunes with the U12s. Beaten by Sarsfields in the division 1 hurling decider. Winning the division 2 Rebel Óg East football league in Killeagh only 10 days previous. Manager Shane Fitzgerald. Also on display was the Chris O’Mahony Cup being strongest overall cub in the East Cork Scór competitions. Praise and thanks as well to Thomas Tobin, manager of Rochestown Park Hotel. Putting up a number of spot prizes for the raffle based on your social entry ticket. Liam Barry, Niamh Pyne and Mike Walsh won a stay in the hotel. Dinners won by Liam O’Connell and Adam Fitzgerald. While Aidan Hickey, Fionn Linehan, Anne O’Sullivan and Alison McMahon will be going for a swim. Then it was all over to DJ Harpur. Fermoy’s very own Pat Feerick.
Busy times for the underage section of the club with the Juvenile AGM going ahead in the main hall of Ballynoe community centre, Friday night coming at 8pm.
Harty Cup
St Catherine’s player Alan Cotter is a member of the St Colman’s panel who now desperately require a result against CBS High School, Clonmel if they are to maintain competitive interest in the current Harty Cup campaign.
All-Stars
First thing Thursday morning came the news that Cork had four players; Sean O’Donoghue, Ciaran Joyce, Darragh Fitzgibbon and Brian Hayes named on the All-Star hurling team. Later at the club social in Rochestown we learned that both Player and Young Hurler of the Year awards were going to Tipperary. Namely John McGrath and Darragh McCarthy. Like its hurling equivalent and the bulk of the All-Star football team named live at presentation night from the RDS came from the All-Ireland final itself. Kerry, who basically won everything there is to win – national, league, Munster and All-Ireland final, picking up 8 awards. Four for defeated finalists Donegal with 5 counties in all picking up All-Stars. Footballer of the Year goes to (surprise surprise!) David Clifford. While Finbarr Roarty (Donegal) collects the Young Player of the Year award.
