Bride Rovers (13th Nov)

BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.
ANOTHER GREAT HURLING WEEKEND. We might be well into November and heading for Christmas but the games go on! Last weekend was a unique and historic one for the Club as we fielded two teams in the Under 21 Hurling Championship -at A and C grade in East Cork. We won one and lost one but the real significance was the fact of having the two teams at this level for the first time. Celebrations continued last week after winning the County Senior A hurling title, no doubt this win will be remembered for many’s the long day and night along the Bide valley. Our Club Annual General Meeting is scheduled for next Monday night November the 17th at half 7. The Ladies AGM was last night, Wednesday and the Juvenile Section AGM is on the 24th of November. The Lotto Jackpot for this week on Tuesday 11th of November was a nice €17,800.
UNDER 21’s IN FINAL. In as dramatic a finish as we witnessed in the Conty Final just seven days later our Under 21 A hurling team repeated the late, late show in Castlelyons on Saturday afternoon. Look, it was a game we should probably have won by a bigger margin given our dominance for three quarters of the hour, but in the end we were lucky to get over the line. In fairness though the lads dug deep towards the conclusion the match as Erins Own looked like pulling away. What an amazing finish we had! Early on we looked to be well on top. With our defence superb the forwards saw plenty ball and both Adam Walsh and Cillian Tobin put over some great frees. We led 0 3 to 0 0, 0 5 to 0 2 and 0 6 to 0 3 in the first quarter. A great goal-bound shot from Ronan O Connell was saved. Ahead by three points Erins Own had a goal in the 22nd minute to level matters. We finished strongly with points from Adam, Cormac Barry and Cillian O Sullivan to lead by 10 points to 1 3 at half time. We had a slight breeze in our favour in the first half and probably should have been more ahead. Erins Own got a quick goal followed by a levelling white flag – 2 4 to 0 10. After this it was a very close and even contest as we managed to stay a point in front. In the 44th minute Erins Own took the lead for the first time 2 8 to 0 13. Then sub Conor O Riordan placed Cormac Barry for a great goal and we were up two once more. Erins Own then hit a purple patch and scored four points on the trot. Good work from Denis Cashman and Liam Collins saw Adam hit over the resultant free, one down now with two minutes left. Erins Own kept attacking but massive defending kept them at bay. As the clock just passed the hour mark Erins Own went two points ahead. The ref indicated two minutes of added time -many though they’d be at least four. We got a free out on the wing. Cormac Barry stepped up and his dipping shot ended up in the net -we were a point up, 2 14 to 2 13 ! Final whistle, no, not yet. Erins Own launched an attack but we held firm. They were awarded a free over on the sideline -extra time looked likely but the free drifted wide. Final whistle -a mixture of sheer delight and relief too as we could have been further in front a few times. But a win is a win and we are through to the East Cork under 21 A Grade hurling Final for the second year in a row. Last year Midleton beat us in the decider in Castlelyons. The ‘Magpies’ will be our 2025 Final opponents once more on Sunday week November 23rd in Aghavine. Team; R O’Riordan; J Ahern, D Cashman, D Fitzgerald; C Hazelwood, C Tobin, L Collins; Cormac Barry, C O’Sullivan; Cillian Barry, R O’Connell, L Roche; J Mannix, A Walsh, D Barry. SUBS; K Cotter for Hazelwood, C O’Riordan for Mannix (both 43), C O’Sullivan for Roche (55). Scorers Cormac Barry 2-3 (1-0 f), A Walsh 0-8 (0-7 f), C Tobin 0-2 f, C O’Sullivan 0-1. Well done lads on a great win. A lot of hard work to be done before the Final but tis great to be there.
EAST CORK UNDER 21 ‘C’ GRADE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Our second Under 21 travelled to Glenville on Sunday morning to take on Castlelyons in the East Cork C Grade championship. This is the clubs first time having a second team at this age and the lads gave a great account of themselves. A lot of this team would never have played together before and it took a few minutes to settle and by the time the team got going Castlelyons had already established a bit of lead thanks to two Brian Spillane goals in the opening minutes. Credit to the lads they got going and points from Cameron, Frank, Ryan and Matthew had us back in the game and when Adam made a great run from centre back all the way through the square and goaled to he margin was back to 2 points 2-3 to 1-4 after 15 minutes.
Frank and Ben got two more points to response to Castlelyons scores but two more quick goals from Castlelyons had the margin back out to 9. The lads didn't panic and three points from Ryan (2) and Matt kept us in the game. Castlelyons finished the first half with two more points and enjoyed a7 point lead at the break on a score of 4-8 to 1-10. The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first, the lads were trying hard but any chance of a come back was being hampered by some fine saves from the Castlelyons goalie. Castlelyons were taking their points at the other end and had the lead out to 4-12 to 1-10 before we got our opening score of the half when Cameron finished a rocket to the back of the net. Matt added another point and the margin was back to eight points 2-11 to 4-13 with 15 minutes left. As we went searching for goals gaps started opening up at the back and Castlelyons took advantage, 3 more goals for them had them in total control. Frank got a goal back but Castlelyons ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 7-18 to 3-13. Great credit to the lads though who gave it their all and several players putting their claims in to get promoted up to the first team for the East Cork final against Midleton. Team & Scorers.; J Hynes, E O'Connor, R Barry, G O'Connell, A Hynes (1-0), J Walsh, R O'Callaghan (0-4), O Kielty, F O'Flynn (1-4), M Kenny (0-3), N Kelleher, C Swalbe-O'Sullivan (1-1), B Knox (0-1). Subs S Dowling, C O'Dowd, G Gubbins, G Quirke, D O'Farrell, A Kelleher, J Lynch. Best of luck to Castlelyons in the Final against Cobh or Sars.

Ross Peters was one of the outstanding Clonmel players on the day -his brother Jamie was corner-back on our County winning team last week.
