BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES.
BACK TO THE PAIRC.
After a hectic action-packed weekend it’s a case of ‘play it again’ for our Senior hurlers. After a close-fought contest last Saturday the Final ended in a draw so a replay is the outcome for both teams. Initially fixed for 6.30 the starting time is now 3.30 on next Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile on Sunday last our Junior Hurlers, contesting our first Divisional JAHC Final since 1998,  were beaten by Cobh.  We lost by eight points having led by a point against the wind in the first half. Look, it was disappointing of course to lose but we can be very proud of the team after a six-game campaign.  There was no Lotto winner on Tuesday October the 21st for a jackpot of €17,200.
COUNTY SENIOR A HURLING FINAL
BRIDE ROVERS 0 14 CASTLELYONS 0 14. At a cold but dry Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday evening the County Senior A Hurling final ended in a draw, a low-scoring game really with both sides raising fourteen white flags. With the first half breeze we took an early commanding lead.  One felt a six or seven point  margin at half time would be needed given the strength of the ind. S it was we were just three ahead at the break.   Twice then in the second half Castlelyons had the gap down to two points. We rallied and led by four with twelve minutes left. Castlelyons levelled he scores as the sixty minutes had elapsed. A Paddy O Flynn point restored our lead but Castlelyons had a similar score to even it up again. It was an unusual game in so far as that both defences dominated and scoring chances were hard to come by. We got a great start and led by 6 points twice in the opening twenty minutes, assisted by the strong breeze blowing towards the Blackrock end.  Five points In the first five minutes was a mighty start -Brian, Adam(free), Conleith Shane and Brian again saw us get the best possible start.  Another Adam Walsh pointed free left us 0 6 to 0 0 ahead.  A second white flag from Shane meant we were 7  to 1 in the lead after ten minutes. I suppose that level of scoring was never going to continue but it’s hard to imagine in the remaining 53 minutes we scored just a further seven more points.  Though our backs were playing very well Castlelyons came right back into the game in the second quarter.  We had just a two point lad approaching the short whistle; 0  8  to 0 6 but a late free from Paddy saw us 9/6 up at the break.  In essence a three point advantage looked dangerous enough given the strength of the wind.  When it went down to two early in the second half things looked shaky.  A free from Paddy saw the white flag waving. With Cian and his defensive unit steady we weathered the early onslaught.  Points from pay by Conleith and Shane  and a free from Paddy in the 47th minute saw us with a nice four point lead; 0 13 to 0 9. The last ten minutes were frantic as point by point Castlelyons came back at us and levelled matters 0 13 each as the sixty minutes played out. Sub Cillian O Sullivan was fouled and Paddy restored our lead again . It was real edge of seat stuff as the clock ticked. From a free Castlelyons restored parity at 14 points each. We had one last chance which went wide and so the final whistle blew at last. Wow, what a game! So the saga goes on. We could have won it and Castlelyons had the momentum at the end to snatch it also. Well done lads on a mighty effort. Back to the training grounds this week and get ready to go again on Saturday next -the first day of November. Originally we heard the game was to be at 6 or half 6 but eventually half 3 on Saturday afternoon at Cork GAA HQ was the agreed time. Wel done to Shane O Connor on winning the Man of the match award on the night.  Team; C Hogan (j.c); J Peters, E Roche, D Cashman; C Hazelwood, C Tobin, S O’Connor; D Barry, K Kearney; P O’Flynn, B Roche, C Ryan (j.c); R O’Connell, A Walsh, J Ahern.  Subs; Conor Barry, Cillian O Sullivan, Louie Roche. Our scorers were  Paddy O Flynn 0 4 frees, Shane O Connor 0 3, Adam Walsh 0 3 frees, Conleith Ryan 0 2, Brian Roche 0 2. It was brilliant to see and hear such a huge Rovers support at the game.
JUNIORS LOSE OUT IN FINAL. Many’s the hurling game would be won by scoring 3 11 but on Sunday last our gallant Junior A team lost out too a strong Cobh side in the Est Cork Championship Final.  We were bidding for our 6th title and the first since 1998- Cobh hadn’t won it since 1985. It was cold but, thankfully, dry afternoon in Clonmult Memorial Park on Sunday with a fine crowd in attendance. Cobh had the aid of a breeze which blew diagonally down the pitch towards the tow. The first half were very even. We never panicked after Cobh struck for a goal in the very first minute.  Points from Cillian, Cormac and Daniel saw us  1 3 to 0 3 in arrears after ten minutes. It was noticeable that Team captain Liam Collins and his backs were coping well with the Cobh attackers.  A great goal from Cillian Barry really brought us right into the game.  A superb point from Conor O Riordan in the16th minute put us 1 5 to 1 4 ahead. A pointed 65  from Shaunie  made it 1 6 to 1 5 and when he added a point from a free we were two  ahead and hurling well.  Cobh levelled , then with 25 minutes gone Daniel Dooley en route goalwards was pulled down, penalty. Shaunie sent the sliotar to the net and quickly followed with a point -we 2 8 to 1 7 up.  Cobh got the last three points to leave us 2 8 to 1 10 in front at half time. After playing against the breeze we were in a great place at the break. We got caught for a goal in the early seconds of the second half to go two behind.  They doubled that lead to four . Then a strongly hit free from Shaunie was finished to the net by Daniel Dooley and we were back in the match. With just thirteen minutes left we were level 3 10 to 2 13 and in a great position. However it was the Cobh men finished strongly scoring 1 5 while we just added  one more point -from Shaunie.  Losing by 3 19 to 3 11 was a cruel way to end a wonderful Junior A Championship for 2025. This team played well in the league and carried that form into the Championship. It’s the very first time in our  97 year history that our  second adult team got to contest an East Cork A Grade Final. Credit to all the panel members and to Richie Cahill, Aiden Dorgan, Oliver O Connor Stephen Boyce, Nathan Cahill and Darren Cody a superb  Management team. Cobh won the first ever East Cork JAHC title in 1926 and last won it in 1985. We wish them all the best in the Co JAHC-they meet Whitechurch in their first game.  A word of thanks to our huge band of supporters on Sunday in Midleton.
