Killeagh GAA Club Notes October 19th 2025

GERALD TREACY RIP
In 1967, Killeagh won our first ever “Jamesy Kelleher”, the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship, a historic victory for the club that laid the foundations for all the successes that have come in the intervening half-century and more. Another one of this team, Gerald Treacy of Meenoughter, left us just a few days ago, after an illness borne with great dignity. Gerald was a lifelong follower and supporter of Killeagh GAA. We send our condolences to Gerald’s family – his wife Margaret and daughters Mary and Carmel, his brother Seán – and to all his relatives, neighbours and friends, who were many, on their sad loss. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
It’s that time of year when we reflect on the season just past and start to think about the season to come. Our Annual General Meeting is fixed for Monday November 3rd at 7.30 p.m. with all current adult members welcome and encouraged to attend, to have your say. The venue is yet to be decided, so please keep an eye out on social media and club texts in the coming weeks.
WELL DONE, AND A CALL TO ARMS!
Young Eoin Fitz and his merry band, aka Kingfhsr, stole the show (literally) with Patrick Kielty et al on last Friday night’s Late Late Show where “Killeagh” got another rousing rendition. Well done to the band of the year! In a similar vein, but at a more local level (for now), Killeagh Theatre are actively seeking to recruit aspiring actors to tread the boards in their production of John B Keane’s “Big Maggie” which will be performed in Killeagh Community Hall in late January and early February. If you are interested, please contact producer Gerard Byrne on 086 2578741. Hollywood here you come??
MATCH REPORTS (JUVENILE)
Rebel Óg Division 1 Minor Hurling Championship County Semi-Final October 12th 2025, Killeagh 6-19, Clonakilty 1-15
Bishopstown Astro was the venue for our Division 1 County semi-final on Sunday 12th October. The lads got a great boost before throw in watching our under 14s claim a county title in great style. We were quick out of the blocks with Ben scoring a goal after 27 seconds. Andrew, Cormac and 4 from Ben saw us lead 1-6 to 0-1 after 13 minutes. An excellent team score finished expertly by Alex Fogarty was followed by an inspirational point from Oran. Clonakilty settled and hit 5 of the next 6 points. Two great scores from Andrew, who had a brilliant first half and two points from Ben saw us lead by 6. Ben then finished a great pass from Cormac for a goal, followed by another Ben point before John Farquhar scored a beauty from the sideline after some great interplay. The half time score saw us lead by 11.
Clonakilty came out with intent and started with a good point. We attacked and Ben popped a pass to Cormac who drove at the heart of the defence before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the top corner. Clonakilty replied immediately with a goal. 2 points from play from Ben and a great shot from John Farquhar were responded to by 3 Clonakilty points. A point each from Fionn and Ben saw us lead by 9. The lads drove on to the final whistle with goals from Ben, Cormac and a superb finish to the top corner from John Farquhar saw lead by 19 at the final whistle.
It was a great team performance from all the 18 lads. We used the ball very well. Adam and the entire defence were very solid. Andrew and Alex were excellent around the middle and upfront all the lads worked very hard with Ben, Cormac and John Farquhar in great shooting form. We got a great impact from the lads off the bench. This win now sees us progress to a County Final against Blarney which will be held in Kildorrery GAA on Bank Holiday Monday October 27th at 3.00 p.m.

Rebel Óg Division 1 Fé 14 Hurling Championship County Final REPLAY October 12th 2025, Killeagh 2-09, Kinsale 0-10
There was relief and joy for our Under 14 hurlers and their band of followers on Sunday afternoon last when, at the second time of asking, they overcame a determined Kinsale side to claim county honours. Conditions were more favourable than they had been in the drawn game, and for the first nine minutes this was the Jay Geary show, as he rattled the net after just two minutes and fired over three great points from play in the next seven. Kinsale had only one point on the board at this stage (a free) and our excellent defence limited them to adding just three more, all from frees, in the opening half. However, they did manage to stem the Jay tide slightly, although he did add a further two points on 14 minutes (a free) and 26 minutes (from play). Alex Kirby, excellent throughout, added our sixth point on 28 minutes to leave us ahead at the break by 1-06 to 0-04. Jay’s next point increased the margin to six before a Kinsale onslaught saw them score four points from play in a five-minute period, during which Padraig Murphy also brought off a great save. Having weathered this mini storm, our team wrestled back control for the final quarter, with two further points from Jay and a great quick-thinking finish from Ciarán Barry (converted successfully from defence to attack for this match) giving us our second goal to secure the victory. Well done to all the team for a brilliant campaign, showing great resilience and spirit throughout. Our backs defended bravely at every turn, Eolann and Ciarán were excellent in midfield, with Eolann’s high catching and distribution very impressive, while our forwards all contributed greatly to setting up and finishing the chances that came their way.
Team: Padraig Murphy, Cian Fitzgerald, Lee Barry, Ciarán Barry, Colm O’Regan, Dillon McCarthy, Charlie O’Mahony, Eolann Deane, Ciarán McGrath, Luke Fitzgerald, Alex Kirby, Kevin Kearney, Eoghan Murphy, Jay Geary, Tomás Rickard Farquhar, Liam Óg Ahern, Sam Barry O’Callaghan, Mikey Curran, Seán Curran, Harry Fogarty, Finn Murphy, Dean Foley.
Rebel Óg East Division 1 Fé 14 Football Shield Final October 17th 2025, Killeagh 4-12, Midleton 3-13 After Extra Time
Five days later, the team were at it again, with another hard-earned victory in the East Division 1 Football Shield Final, which was held in the Astro pitch at Park South, the magnificent new facilities of our hosts Midleton. A cracking game of football on a calm evening saw us behind at half time after Midleton bagged two goals to lead by 2-03 to 0-06. A late goal from Eolann Deane at the end of an enthralling 60 minutes saw us claim a draw – 2-10 to 3-07, and unlike the hurling county final, this one had to be decided on the day. So on to extra time, where it was still level after the initial deich nóiméad – 3-10 ag an dá fhoireann – ach bhí an bua againn le cúl eile ó Jay sa dara leath d’am breise. An scór a bhí ann ag deireadh an chluiche ná Cilliath 4-12, Mainistir na Corann 3-13. This match typified the never-beaten spirit and attitude of this team throughout 2025, which is especially admirable given that only 8 of the panel of 21 are “on the age”. While playing second fiddle to other teams in physical size, great heart and desire saw us win many a match that may otherwise have been beyond us. Well done to all the boys and to their dedicated management team!
