Frank Halbert Shield Final – Glenville v Laochra Aeracha

Glenville claimed the Frank Halbert Shield title after a comprehensive and deserved victory over a gallant Laochra Aeracha side in extremely tough, wet conditions. Despite the heavy pitch and driving showers, both sides served up an entertaining game of football, played in the very best of spirits.

From the start Glenville settled quickly. In goal, Paddy O’Sullivan showed great composure and safe hands, setting the tone for a confident display. In front of him, the full back line of Mike Murphy, Dara O’Bric and John O’Connor gave nothing away lightly. Dara was a rock in the centre, commanding the square, while Mike and John stuck tight to their men and delivered clever clearances.

The half back line of Donncha Forde, Fionn Fitzgerald and Coran O’Neill impressed throughout. Donncha covered every blade of grass on the wing, Fionn controlled the centre with power and vision, and Coran linked the play superbly, driving forward whenever the chance came.

At midfield, Dennis Buttimer and Conor Gowan took control of the contest. Both men worked tirelessly in the difficult conditions, winning breaking ball and carrying possession into dangerous areas. Their dominance allowed Glenville’s forwards to shine.

Up front, Glenville’s attack was full of movement and invention. Rio Horgan used his pace to stretch the Laochra defence, while captain Stephen Ryan led by example at centre forward. Stephen’s performance was capped by the moment of the game in the second half — a brilliant lobbed goal from all of 30 metres. Alongside him, Eddie Delahunt was clever in possession, linking attacks and picking out teammates with sharp passes.

Inside, Glenville were ruthless. Will Sheehy opened the scoring with a fine goal early in the first half to settle nerves and give Glenville the perfect start. Diarmuid McCarthy was an excellent focal point at full forward, winning ball and bringing others into the play, while Paudie Cahill buzzed around the square with his trademark sharp runs and eye for goal. When called upon, substitute Cian O’Callaghan made a fine impact, showing energy and determination to keep the pressure on Laochra’s defence.

By the final whistle, Glenville had built an unassailable lead and the celebrations could begin. After the game, a word of thanks must go to John Halbert, who kindly presented the Shield to Glenville captain Stephen Ryan, who proudly lifted the trophy on behalf of his teammates to the delight of the Glenville support.

Special mention must go to the management team of Pat McHugh, Paddy O’Sullivan and Johnny O’Connell, whose guidance, preparation, and encouragement were key in bringing the side to this stage and over the line in the final.

Finally, Glenville GAA would like to thank Laochra Aeracha for a sporting and wholehearted contest, and to wish them the very best in the future.
