It’s that time of year when we reflect on the season just past and start to think about the season to come. MATCH REPORT (ADULT)

Michael O’Connor Motor Factors Junior A Football Championship Sunday September 28th Lisgoold 5-13, Glenbower Rovers 1-14 (After Extra Time)

Our Junior A football championship campaign ended, as it began, in despair. Despite an excellent performance for over 60 minutes which looked like keeping us afloat in the Junior A grade for 2026, an injury-time sucker-punch goal gave our opponents Lisgoold a lifeline which they then took with relish in the additional 20 minutes to relegate us back to where we came from for next year. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is something that our footballers have become accustomed to in recent years – two years ago we let slip possible wins against Lisgoold, Cloyne and Aghada (Lisgoold subsequently went on to win their first title while we were relegated) while this year we had ample opportunity to close the deal against both Lisgoold and Aghada yet were undone by late goals in both. This match saw us undoubtedly play the best football of the campaign, with an early Colm Leahy goal giving us a strong foothold and further points from George Walsh, Evan Lane and a brace from Paudie Mackey sending us in at half time one ahead – 1-04 to 0-06. We went three ahead by the third quarter after a two-pointer free from Matthew Murphy and two frees from Paudie Mackey before Lisgoold raised their first green flag to level matters. Evan Lane’s second point and two from Paudie restored our three-point advantage but just as it looked like this would be enough, Lisgoold got their second equalising goal deep into injury time, after both sides had been reduced to 14 players. After all our great work, the game was level – 1-11 to 2-08. In extra time the tank was empty and Lisgoold kicked on, scoring three more goals to run out convincing winners in the end by 5-13 to 1-14, a score line which doesn’t do justice to the efforts of our team. In my previous football report I had noted that we had used 33 players in our three round robin Junior A championship matches; this match saw us introduce three further players to bring that tally to 36, including our third goalkeeper in four matches. It’s back to the drawing board for 2026, with a big task facing whoever will be handed the football bag! Go n-éirí libh!

Team: Philip O’Neill, Aaron Fitzgibbon, George Walsh, Ciaran Leahy, Robbie Treacy, Brendan Delaney, Ben Walsh, Rob Sinclair, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Keane Budds, Matthew Murphy, Dara Motherway, Evan Lane, Colm Leahy, Paudie Mackey, Dinny Walsh, Manus Darby, Conor Burns.

MATCH REPORT (Fé 21)

Mulcahy Steel Fé 21 East Cork A Hurling Championship Quarter Final Killeagh Erins Own 5-24, Killeagh 0-16

Our 2025 Under 21 hurling campaign began at 15 minutes before noon in Rostellan on Sunday October 5th and was over by 1300 hrs. In truth, it was over at 1215 hrs after Erins Own’s second and third goals (both scored by Shane Irwin) in the minutes before half time gave them an unassailable 3-14 to 0-06 lead. The second half saw Erins Own add two more goals while we did manage ten additional points, but this was a poor performance from an admittedly understrength side, with just three players on the age and five minors, including three Under 17s, on our starting 15. David Buckley and Cormac Deane were our best performers but this won’t be one that we’ll be telling the grandchildren about!

Team: Fionn Murphy, Conor Burns, Harry Connon, Pierce Geary, Ben Budds, Ben Walsh, Michael Doherty, Cathal Brennan, Daniel Walsh, Fionn Brennan, David Buckley, Cormac Deane, John Ogbebor, Colm Leahy, Ben Geary, Oran Cunningham, Rian O’Connor, Diarmuid Buckley, Cormac Delaney.

MATCH REPORTS (JUVENILE)

Rebel Óg Division 1 Minor Hurling Championship Final September 28th 2025, Killeagh 1-16, Bride Rovers 1-14

Lisgoold was the venue for the East Minor Division 1 Final on Sunday 28th September. It was an epic battle with little separating the teams throughout. The result was on a knife edge right up to the 62nd minute when Cathal McAllister blew the full-time whistle.

We started brightly with an over the shoulder effort from Ben. Bride Rovers settled and hit the next 3 points in a row. Ben blocked the keeper and was fouled for a free, which he converted. Cormac then struck a beauty from near the side-line. Bride Rovers replied with a point before Cormac Delaney got onto a breaking ball to finish a great shot to the net. Ben then struck 2 points in a row before another point from distance from Cormac. Bride Rovers rallied, they hit the next 1-03 without reply, the goal came after a brilliant double save from Adam. Ben converted 2 65’s and a super effort from play. Cormac had another after a great driving run. But Bride Rovers replied, as was the pattern of the game, to leave the half time score 1-10 to 1-07.

The second half saw more of the same. Bride Rovers had moved to playing a sweeper early in the first half and our use of the ball could have been better. Bride Rovers hit the opening 2 points of the second half before Fionn replied with a great shot from the wing. Scores were harder to come by in the second half. It was a real dogfight as both teams gave everything. Bride Rovers scored 2 before Cormac scored from distance to edge us a point ahead. Bride Rovers equalized before John Ogbebor was fouled after a driving run. Ben duly converted. An excellent point by Ben was followed by 2 from Bride Rovers to make it 1-13 apiece after 51 minutes. A converted free by Ben was followed by a Bride Rovers free. With 58 minutes on the clock Ben struck a beauty over the right shoulder to see us one up. A minute later he won a ball near the side-line and dummied his man before arrowing one over inside the 13-yard line to put us 2 clear. The drama was far from over. An outstanding block from Oran was followed up by some incredible defending from Tadgh, Rian, Jack, Cian and Cathal. Bride Rovers were pushing hard and were awarded a free 21 yards out to the right of the goal. The shot was saved and from the rebound John Ogbebor threw himself bravely to stop the ball. With that came the full-time whistle and scenes of great jubilation. It was a fantastic display of grit and determination. Credit to Bride Rovers who played their part in a superb contest. Adam had an excellent game in goals. Andrew and Alex played superbly around the middle (as they have done all year). Up front all 6 lads gave everything. Cormac and Ben hit some superb scores. Our joint captains Oran and Jack collected the cup on behalf of the team. This win now sees us progress to a County semi-final against Clonakilty. Date and time TBC.

Team: Adam Barry, Tadgh Considine, Oran Cunningham (JC), Rian O’Connor, Cian O’Riordan, Jack Coleman (JC), Cathal Brennan, Andrew Brenner, Alex Fogarty, John Ogbebor, Cormac Deane (0-4), Fionn Brennan (0-1), Cormac Delaney (1-0), Ben Geary 0-11(3f,2 65’s), John Farquhar, Tom Power, Billy Guerin, Jack Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Alex Howey, Ronan O’Riordan, Dara McDonald, Seanan McDonnell.

Rebel Óg Division 1 Fé 14 Division 1 Hurling Championship Final October 4th 2025, Killeagh 1-10, Kinsale 2-07

A cracking game of hurling from two ultra-committed sides on Bishopstown’s astro pitch on Saturday last saw both sides finish ar chmohscór ag deireadh an chluiche, agus beidh lá eile ag an dá fhoireann. Playing against a very strong wind, Luke Fitzgerald scored Killeagh’s opening score, after which Kinsale slowly took control, with a goal at the quarter hour mark giving them a 1-02 to 0-01 lead. Both teams added four points each in the second quarter, with Jay Geary scoring three, two of those from placed balls, and Eolann Deane also scoring a long-range free i gcoinne na gaoithe. One key play on 27 minutes saw Padraig Murphy, brilliant all through, pull off a point-blank save to prevent Kinsale getting further ahead. Ag leath-am bhí 1-07 ag Cionn Sáile agus 0-06 ag Cilliath. The second half repeated the first half pattern, where scores were hard won and both sides defended extremely well, such that by the three quarter mark we had only made a one-point inroad into the four-point gap, with Eolann and Jay scoring one free each. A further free from Eolann reduced the gap to two on 48 minutes before Jay Geary rounded his man and placed a great shot past the equally impressive Kinsale ‘keeper Ollie Cahill to give us our only goal and the lead for the first time since the opening minutes, 1-08 to 1-07. Two further scores from Eolann (from play and from a free) saw us three ahead with the clock ticking towards the final whistle. Another brilliant save from Padraig and the right hand post preserved our lead as Kinsale launched multiple attacks, but we were unable to add the required insurance point to widen the gap sufficiently. With the clock gone into the red, Padraig made another great save but Kinsale got to the rebound to raise their second green flag, and ba é sin an scór deireanach. Discussions took place about whether there would be extra time or a replay, and sensibly, both sides were given the opportunity to call it quits and to reset for another day. The right call!

Team: Padraig Murphy, Cian Fitzgerald, Lee Barry, Ciarán Barry, Colm O’Regan, Dillon McCarthy, Charlie O’Mahony, Eolann Deane, Ciarán McGrath, Luke Fitzgerald, Alex Kirby, Kevin Kearney, Eoghan Murphy, Jay Geary, Tomás Rickard Farquhar, Liam Óg Ahern, Sam Barry O’Callaghan, Mikey Curran, Seán Curran, Harry Fogarty, Finn Murphy, Dean Foley.
