Castlelyons GAA Notes Week Ended 15.9.25.

Castlelyons minor hurlers qualify for Rebel Óg East Final.

Rebel Óg East Under 18 Division 2 Hurling Championship.

Castlelyons 4-24 St Vincents 1-15.

Castlelyons were at home to St Vincents last Wednesday evening in the Rebel Óg East Under 18 Division 2 Hurling Championship and after a very competitive first half ran out convincing winners in the end.  We were missing Sean Óg McGuire who is in college in Limerick and had Sam McCarthy and Khaled Abdelrazik back after injury.  St Vincents started well as Sean Daly was doing well for them.  Adam Lardner (0-1) and Sam McCarthy (0-3) kept us in touch with some good scores including one by Sam as he took a Dylan Leetch clearance and swung over a great point leaving it 0-4 apiece after 10 minutes.  Our backs were busy, but Jude Hallihan in goal, Geróid McCarthy, Tom O’Neill and Cathal Murphy were doing well.  Gradually we got into the pace of the game with Ciarán Murphy and Khaled Abdelrazik got good scores.  Then the game turned as Sam McCarthy won a good ball at midfield and sent it in for Adam Lardner to field well and slam in our second goal.  We finished the half well to leave it 2-10 to 0-12 at the short whistle.

Darragh Fleming had an early point for us in the second half and when Ronan Ryan broke down a great ball to Adam Lardner who banged to the net again and the game was as good as over.  Some highlights of the second half were a great outfield point by Sean O’Callaghan, Sub Darragh Bransfield bringing the house down with a great score and attacking Cathal Sheehan getting the last scored for us in what was a facile win.

In the other semi-final St Catherines fought all the way to forge a great draw with Nemo Rangers.  However, it was not enough to get them to the final.  We finished second to Nemo Rangers in the group and play them in the final.  They defeated us in the group game by three points, and the final will be an intriguing contest as they will be favourites but if our lads play to their potential we are in with a right shout.  We will have the date and venue of this game later.

Panel:  Jude Hallihan; Tom O’Neill, John O’Neill, Cathal Sheehan; Oran Hickey, Dylan Leetch, Gearóid McCarthy; Sean Óg McGuire, Thomas McAuliffe; Shane Hallihan, Darragh Fleming, Ciarán Murphy; Shane O’Callaghan, Ronan Ryan, Sam McCarthy and Khaled Abdelrazik   Adam Lardner Eanna Cotter, Ronan Hickey, Liam O’Riordan, Darragh Bransfield and Alex Quirke

Rebel Óg North Under 18 Division 2 Hurling League Final.

Castlelyons play Kilworth/Araglen Óg in the Rebel Óg North league final in Castlelyons on Friday evening the 19th of September at 7pm.  When these teams met in the league Castlelyons had a narrow win.  The player would know each other well and hurling in college together.  So, it should be an intriguing contest.  Best of luck to Castlelyons.

Dave Hegarty Perpetual Cup presented at the Castlelyons Street Leagues last Sunday.

The Juvenile Club held the street leagues for the first time in a few years last Sunday.  While the day was breezy the weather held dry for the few hours.  There was a great crowd and a major festival of juvenile hurling.  Thanks to all who helped in making it a very enjoyable day of hurling for the children and especially to Colm Spillane, Niall O’Leary, Keith O’Leary, and Kevin Barry, who managed the four Under 12 teams. The highlight of the games was the launching and the presentation of the Dave Hegarty Perpetual Cup to the Under 12 winning team.

Dave Hegarty and members of the Hegarty family were present on the occasion and Dave presented the cup to the winning team. Dave formed the Juvenile club and was secretary and East Cork Board delegate for over 20 years. Chairman Michael O’Donovan spoke on behalf of the juvenile club and outlined how delighted they were to name the street leagues cup after a man that has dedicated most of his life to Castlelyons hurling and football.  and Dave replied and spoke of his delight about the juvenile day and wished the Club well in the future.

East Cork Junior C Football Championship.

Midleton 2-11 Castlelyons 2-7.

We played Midleton in the Clonmult Memorial Park on Saturday evening last in the concluding game in our group and had a reasonably convincing victory in the end.  Shane Flynn, Mike Griffin and Cees Kouwenberg put us 0-3 up and Midleton got their first score a point 24 minutes into the game.  We were doing well in the backs and midfield but failed to take several scoring chances up front. However, Mike, Cees and Jack Cremin scored again for us to make it 0-6 to 0-2 at half time.

At the start of the second half Brian Spillane was fouled and Jack converted the free as we got a few more points one a spectacular one from Alan O’Regan.  When Brian cut through for a great goal to leave it 2-11 to 0-3 the game was as good as over.  We dropped the tempo then and Midleton scored 2-3 without reply.  But Jack Cremin pointed for us again and we finished out well.

Or next game will be versus Aghada and although they are favourites, we can rattle them, but we must keep up the work rate and concentration for the whole game.

Panel: - Kevin Barry; Cathal Sheehan, Conor McCarthy, Eoin Barry; Matthew Rosner, Stephen Griffey, Sean Leneghan; Dylan Leetch, Eoin McLoughlin; Shane O’Flynn, Stephen Rice, Michael Griffin; Jack Cremin, Ronan Ryan, Jack Kenny, Sean Óg McGuire, Cees Kouwenberg, Tom O’Neill, Stephen Hickey

Premier Junior Camogie Championship.

Mallow 3-9 Castlelyons 2-8.

Our premier junior camogie team travelled to Mallow on Wednesday evening last to play the local in the quarter final of the competition.  The game was at the unusual time of 8.30pm and clashed with a minor hurling semi-final in Castlelyons. After some great games with Midleton and Tracton the spirit was good with the Castlelyons girls.   They played with aid of a slight breeze in the first half and goals by Sarah Morrison and Niamh Barry together with four points from Eavan Cotter (2), Ava Hallihan and Avril Byrne (one each) helped them to lead at half time by eight points as the score was Castlelyons 2-4 Mallow 0-2.

However, Mallow on home ground came back strong in the second half putting 3-7 on the board to our 0-4.  Leah Hallihan came off injured midway through the second half and was a loss.  Our scores came from Eavan Cotter (2) and Ciara Morrison (2).  A four-point loss was disappointing but there was a fantastic effort put in all year by the girls and their management.

On the night some of the girls made the return trip from colleges in Carlow, Limerick and Cork then the game was played in the second pitch in Mallow and did not start until 8.50pm twenty minutes later than scheduled due to a game beforehand. Coming off the field at 10.20pm and heading back was a long journey and shows the serious dedication by the girls and no doubt in time we will reap the benefit, but it was not to be this year.  Overall, it was a positive year as the girls have arranged use of the gym, great cooperation with the use of pitches for training and games, every assistance from the committee and of course a great management in Darren Tobin, Shane & Liam Moroney, Niamh O’Donovan, Aoife Beausang and physio Tori Dolphin.

Panel: Ellie O’Brien; Olivia Sheehan, Isabel Fenton, Emma Darragh; Michelle Hartnett, Rachel Murphy, Malissa O’Sullivan, Leah Hallihan, Emer Hallihan, Eavan Cotter, Avril Byrne, Aisling Rosner, Niamh Barry, Sarah Morrison, Ciara Morrison, Ava Hallihan, Sharon Byrne, Siobhán Crowley, Sive Hallihan, Robyn Hickey, Saoirse McAuliffe, Olivia Nonan, Katie O’Riordan, Cara Hickey, Niamh Coleman, Ella Quirke, Sarah Kate Reals, Michaela Griffin, Phoebe Hallihan Gráinne McCarthy, Olivia Beausang.
