BRIDE ROVERS NOTES.
HUGE HURLING WEEKEND.
The Round Robins are over, the swallows are gone and it’s knock-out championship season. This coming week-end we have our three hurling teams in Championship action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The under 16’s are in the Challenge Cup Final against the Barrs and the two under 13 teams have big games also on Saturday and Sunday.
EAST CORK JUNIOR A GRADE HURLING.
On Friday night September 19th we make the trip to Glenville for the East Cork JAHC quarter final. Under lights at 8pm our opponents will be Sarsfields. This is a big challenge for the junior A team. We defeated Carrigtwohill and Killeagh but lost to Cobh and s qualified for the quarter final. Since our first outing in Ballynoe a month ago we’ve lost a few players to the Senior team. Sars have so many plyers that they are strong at eery level. Our lads have shown some great skill and heart in this campaign so hopefully we can qualify for an East Cork semifinal. Best of luck lads.
SENIOR HURLING COUNTY QUARTER FINAL. On Saturay evening in Pairc UI Rinn our Senior team meet Inniscarra in the County Quarter Final. After two good wins v Blarney and Courceys we were well beaten by the Hill in Ballynoe in our last Group game. Now it’s down to this game against Inniscarra who gave Castlelyons a great battle in their last game. Our lads know well that the Ballynoe performance wasn’t good enough so we nee to really up the performance on Saturday evening. The game is timed for 5.30 with the Blarney v Na Piarsaigh game to follow. Go for it lads.
EAST CORK JUNIOR C HURLING SEMI FINAL. On Sunday morning our Junior C hurling team face a massive challenge when we meet Carrignavar’s second team in the East Cork semi final. This is our third team meeting a very strong Carrig team. In fairness to our lads in both League and Championship this season they have played very well and got some excellent results. The game on Sunday is in Glenville at 11 o clock. Go for it lads.
UNDER 13’s BUSY ON ALL FRONTS. As the season heads towards the business end, our two Under13 Hurling teams have qualified for a league and Shield Final, and our Team 2 footballers have qualified for a Shield Final. Our team 1 footballers play Bandon in the League Semi-Final on Wednesday night to see if we can make it four finals from four. Saturday13th September
- Shield SF - Bride Rovers 2 3-7 Carrigtwohill 2 1-6
We played against a strong breeze in the first half here but played extremely well and worked hard to force a lot of Carrigtwohill wides in the first half. Carrigtwohill went a point up after 2 mins and added two more in the 7th and 8th minute to go 0-3 up. Carrigtwohill had territorial dominance in the first 20 minutes but only managed to add two more scores during this time to make it 0-5 to 0-0. Rovers came more into it in the last 10 minutes of the half and had some very close goal chances but couldn't make it count. With 4 minutes to go in the half, wing-back Ryan Hogan went on a mazey run through the Carrigtwohill defence, sidestepped the goalkeeper and rattled the back of the net to leave it Bride Rovers 1-0 Carrigtwohill 0-5 at half time.
Despite the breeze dying down, Rovers started the second half brightly with full forward Theo Byrd getting a goal. Conor Dorgan added a point and now Rovers were up by 2 points. On 11 minutes, Tiarnán Lyons ran through to finish off a great team move and Darragh Feeney almost added a second immediately as he scored a point from close range. Ryan Hogan added a point for Rovers on 21 mins before Carrigtwohill responded with a goal to put 4 between the teams. Rovers went on to finish the game strongly with two more Ryan Hogan points and a point from Jamie Gould to leave the final score, Bride Rovers 3-7 Carrigtwohill 1-6. Rovers now qualify for the Shield Final against St. Finbarrs 2.

REBEL OG MH Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final Win v Watergrasshill.
Away to the Hill, on a windy but dry evening, Felix Sarsfield Memorial Park was the venue for the Minor Hurling Semi Final. A place in the final was at stake so tensions were high for both sides. We beat the Hill earlier this year in the Minor Hurling League final so we were expecting a strong reaction from our opponents.
The game started fast as expected and our opponents got early scores. Our Backs of Ronan, Denis, Jamie, Adam, Cathal & Gearoid started to settle under the puck outs and got our Midfield of Cormac & Oliver on good ball. As you’d expect in any semifinal there was a tough intensity and both side gave it their all with good scores from open play. There was plenty of frees for both sides as the tackle count increased all through the opening half.
Captain Cormac won the toss and we had a diagonal wind aiding us but it wasn’t easy to be accurate with scores. The Hill were playing well and turned us over a good few times coming out of defence and got the only goal of the game. On the 25 minute we added Mark to our defence which steadied us and had Finn as the third midfielder and moved good ball around and we topped up the scores to a halftime lead of 12 Points to 1-5.
The second half had even more intensity and some of the battles were fierce. Jack in Goals made a good save and was giving Sean, Conor and Michael good ball at centre forward and as always the lads were working hard and contributed some great points.
We were Playing a two- man full forward line of Jack and Matty and they were out in front of a tight opposition but won great ball and contributed with more points from play and frees. Midway in the second half we were five ahead bu
it was down to a point with 10 minutes to go as we struggled to keep a hold of the game. We introduced Rudi and Garry to our attack and brought Matty out to centre field and got a few scores back again and even created a goal chance but this was well saved by the Hill.
There was a Red card for the Hill after we lost Oliver to a reckless high tackle. We reorganized and spread the ball better finding the space on the field and finishing with some great team points right to the final whistle winning on a score line of 22 Points to 1-15. We have the Hurling Final on the 28th v Killeagh- they beat us in the Round Robin series below in Killeagh and went unbeaten through the campaign. Well done to the lads

TRIP TO TIPP FOR UNDER10’s.
We travelled to Moycarkey-Borris of Tipperary for an Under10 hurling blitz last Saturday morning with a 10.30 throw in. We had two teams out against two home teams. Our youngsters battled very hard with some great scores and passing and resolute defending shown throughout the game. Well done to all for a great mornings hurling. Thanks to the Moycarkey-Borris Club for the invitation and thanks to all who provided transport for the lads. On Wednesday night of last wee we had the ST Catherines under 10 hurlers as visitors for a series of mini games. Thanks to Pa O Neiil for his help with these games.
EAST CORK JBFC. Footballers fall to Glenville
Our junior footballers, despite a spirited effort which saw some great two-point shooting, fell to a Glenville side with a mix of youth and experience.
The point-taking efforts of Frank O'Flynn in the first half was noteworthy. Being behind by 3.8 to 0.3 at the break was acceptable given the wind we had played against. However, what wasn't acceptable was our habit of switching off in terms of concentration and not contesting possession that was there for the taking. The two goals leaked due to the above made the task much more difficult. The second half saw an improvement and started with a spectacular Seamus Ahern goal, as well as team captain Darragh O'Sullivan who fitted three two-pointers into his 25 mins on the field.
We competed well in this half, but the lead was simply too great. and the game finished Glenville 3.13 Bride Rovers 1.09
To reach the knockout stages, we will need a positive result in our last game against Ballinacurra on Sun 28th Sept.
While we are struggling to remain competitive at JBFC, a larger conversation needs to be had at the end of the year within the club about maintaining football. Having won the JAFC in 2021, with 3 adult hurling teams of players and two Under21 teams fielding later this year, we should have much more players than the bare 15 for a football championship game. Having said that, huge credit to those players who have committed since the start of the year, and who continue to represent the club and pull on the jersey at every opportunity in a championship game. These players would appreciate, and undoubtedly deserve, the support of their peers given how those committed to both GAA codes have represented the club under difficult circumstances this year.
