BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES..
HECTIC TWENTY SIX HOURS HURLING.
What a weekend that was with our three adult hurling teams in action, the under 10’s in Kildare and we hosted a County Board game as well. After all that action packed into a little over a day we are still standing in the three championships. A little battered and bruised but our Senior Hurlers are in the County Quarter Final v Innniscarra. The Junior C’s are a step further -they’ll face Carrignavar in the East Cork semi final. The Junior A hurlers face a tough task too as they are due to meet Sars in a quarter final game. We lost to a better Watergrasshill side at windy Ballynoe on Saturday evening in our Round Three tie. . We should have stayed overnight as it was an 11 am throw-in for the Junior c’s on Sunday morning -a good win here. In Pairc na Bride at we hosted a Co Board game before a big crowd. On then to Felix Sarsfield Park in the Hill on Sunday evening where Cobh were simply too strong in the East Cork Junior A championship. This weekend coming we meet Glenville in the Junior B grade Football Championship. There’s a Car Boot sale on Sunday and a harvest Festival in Bartlemy from this Thursday Sept 11th until next Sunday. The Lotto Jackpot is at €16,000.
SENIOR A HURLING CHAMPONSHIP.
Having defeated Blarney and Courceys in the earlier Rounds we faced Watergrashill in our final Group game in Ballynoe on Saturday evening. On a windy night before a huge crowd we simply were beaten by a better team on the night -no excuses. The Hill played with the very strong breeze straight up the field and scored some great early points. It was 8 points to 3 after the first quarter. Then a great goal from Conleith Ryan brought us right back into the game. For the next five or six minutes it was tit for tat. It the Hill who finished the half strongly with a succession of white flags to leave them ahead by 0 16 to 1 4 at the break. An early massive point from Cillian Tobin started the second half brightly for us but in truth we never took control-we were unable to get a run of scores together. When the Hill goaled- followed by a point, it was 1 17 to 1 5 -a twelve point deficit. An absolutely brilliant save from Cian Hogan was vital as the Hill sought a winning margin of eighteen points -that would eliminate us from the Championship. In fairness to our lads though things wee not going well, they kept battling. Adam Walsh had a penalty saved and we never seemed to be winning the braking ball. In the end we were beaten by a margin of nine points 1 22 to 1 13. It was serious set-back but strangely even if we had won Killeagh’s heavy loss to Carrigtwohill would have deprived us of a semi final slot. As it is we now face Inniscarra in the quarter final in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday week September 20th at 5.30. The lads know they under- performed and a lot of work will be done between last Saturday evening and next week. Team and scorers. C Hogan 0 1 ; J. Ahern E Roche, J Peters; C Hazelwood, C Tobin 0 1, S O’Connor; C O’Sullivan, D Barry; C Ryan 1 0, B Roche 0 2 , K Kearney; R O Connell 0 2. A Walsh 0 5 , 4 frees, L Roche 0 1, Subs; P O Flynn, J Mannix 0 1.
REBEL OG MINOR FOOTBALL.
Bride Rovers Minor Footballers win a fantastic semifinal. Having won our Football Championship group we qualified for a Semi Final v Carrigtowhill – the team that beat us earlier this year in the League Final. On a fine dry September evening in Pairc Na Bride we had a big panel togged out and had a few players out with injury. We reminded the lads what happened in our previous meeting with Carrigtwohill and they had to put everything in to secure a place in the Championship Final. Our opponents won the toss, they played with the wind got the better start with three early points two from play from play and 1 from a free. Carrig were going well and they turned over our out-ball and scored a goal when a penalty was awarded. Fair play to our lads they didn’t panic and started winning our kick outs from David. We ran and passed great ball up into the forwards and got on the score board. We were turning over their kick outs now with great fielding from Conor and Cormac with Sean and Rudi running off the shoulders and adding to the scores.
Fast aggressive hard tackling was produced by both sides but we got a run of scores from Conor, Rudi, and a green flag each from Cormac and Finn. Carrig were scoring well from play and frees but it was our tough tight defence of Jamie, Denis and Ronan in the full back line and great carries out of defence through Cathal, Adam and Gearoid held the score at the short whistle; Bride Rovers 2-3 Carrigtwohill 1-7.
The Second half started with the same intensity and they got the first point. The lads again were great on the kick-outs and secured great possession through Oliver into Sean and Michael finishing great play with points. We made two changes at half time where we brought in Jack Mannix at Corner forward and Mark Hynes at corner back. We got better ball into our forward because we pressed their kick outs and converted more points through Jack and Oliver.
All over the field we were working very hard, playing as a great team - it takes a panel to win a championship match and we finished as strong as we started. We brought in Matty for Rudi and Gary for Michael and both gave it their all when our opponents were tiring. Our backs pressed up and turned great ball over to our favour, we had to recycle the ball against a tight defence but got another run of points from Michael, Conor, Jack, Rudi and our last score was a well finished ball to the back of the net by Cormac all coming from our boys attacking and hard running.
With time up we had a 3 point lead but our opponents were given a good few extra minutes of play and scored a great 2 pointer to leave 1 in it. Credit to our young men from Bride Rovers they defended bravely and saw the game out in a final score of 3-10 to 1-15.

UNDER 10’s IN KILDARE. Our under 10 boys participated in the Gary Kenny under10 Festival of Football at Celbridge GAA Club Kildare on last Saturday the 6th of September. It was a really early ‘wake-up’ call for the boys with a meeting up in Rathcormac at 6.45am for the trip to Kildare. It was huge Tournament with teams, literally, from the four corners of the Country taking part. Our boys played five games in total against the home team Celbridge (Kildare), Lámh Dhearg,( Belfast), Summerhill (Meath), Straffan (Kildare) and Round Towers (Clondalkin, Dublin).
The boys produced some great team-work and skills throughout the games and thoroughly enjoyed the day. It was great to get the invitation from the Celbridge Club and we thank them for their wonderful hospitality on the day.

EAST CORK JUNIOR C HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Our Junior C Hurlers travelled to Ballynoe on Sunday morning to take on the hosts in the East Cork Junior C Hurling Quarter final. St Catherines had topped their group which included Cobh, Erins Own and Youghal so we knew we had a massive challenge ahead of us to progress. In our group we defeated Fr O Neills and Midleton and lost to Lisgoold.
The first half was a cagey affair, and scores were hard to come by, Catherines opened the scoring with a point in the first minute which Frank cancelled out with our opening score in the 6th minute. We were being wasteful in front of goals and Catherines were far more economical and got the next two points before Liam Forde reduced the margin to one in the 16th minute with a point.
Catherines restored there two-point lead and then Cameron made a great run through on goals, but he was denied by a wonderful save from the Catherines keeper, Frank did get a point in the follow up and when he got his third point in the 25th minute the sides were level 4 points apiece.
Catherines responded with another point before Kamso made a great run trough on goals, he passed to Michael Collinswhose initial effort was partially blocked by a Catherines defender, but Frank was on hand to pull the ball into the net to give us a two-point lead. Catherines scored another point to leave the margin at the minimum at the break Rovers 1-4 to 6 points for the Saints .
We started the second half better and Michael Collins got a goal from our first attack, Frank added two more points, and we had managed to move into a 6-point lead. Catherines responded with two points of their own but when Liam and Michael got a point each, we still enjoyed a six point lead in the 45th minute.
Catherines were never going to give up and they scored 1-1 in a minute to reduce the margin back to two points. Our full forward line was causing them difficulties and when the next high ball came in around the house Michael managed to pull on it into the net. Catherines responded with a point before Michael repeated the trick to complete his hat-trick and give us a -point lead 4-8 to 1-10 with ten minutes left.
Catherines as ever would never gave up and went on a run of scores, 1-3 in five minutes to reduce the margin back to the minimum in 56th minute 4-8 to 2-13.
Credit to the lads they settled again with our defence solid and we went on to score the last five points of the game - coming from Craig, Liam, Cameron, Seamus and Frank so see us out winners on a score line of 4-13 to 2-13.
Team & Scorers: S O’Flynn, C O’Dowd ©, B Collins, J Kearney, J O’Sullivan, J Mannix, N Kelleher, L Harrington, S Ahern (0-1), F O’Flynn (1-6), D O’Sullivan, K Obi, C Swalbe-O’Sullivan (0-1), L Forde (0-3), M Collins (3-1) Subs: O Kielty, C O’Callaghan (0-1), G Gubbins, S Boyce, Jamie Buckley, John Buckley, D Kelleher, C Howard. We now look forward to a semi final against Carrignavar, it’s only their second team so we know they are very strong but it’s great to get a good run in this competition with our third XV-well done lads.
EAST CORK JAHC. Our Junior A Hurlers were our third adult hurling team out in Championship action in 24 hours when we travelled to Watergrasshill on Sunday evening to take on Cobh. Both teams were certain of advancing to the knock-out stages of the competition prior to throw-in so the prize on offer for the winner was a semi-final spot and the chance to bypass the quarter finals.
We started this game slowly and Cobh had a 6-point lead before Ronan got our opening score from a long range free in the 10 minute. Adam got our next four points all from placed balls which were keeping us in the game. We lost Oran before half time but his replacement Cormac made an instant impact getting our opening score from play in 25th minute which had the margin back to 3 on a score line of 1-6 to 6 points.
Cobh got their second goal of the game which put a major dent in our come back and added three more points before the break with Ada getting two back for us which left us with 7-point deficit to try make up 2-9 to 8 points at the break.
Cobh started the second half better and scored 5 of the 1st 6 points to take a 11-point lead 2-14 to 9 with Cormac 2nd point being our only response. Half time substitution Conor made an impact with our next two points and when Adam scored two more frees the margin was back to 7, 2-14 to 13 points in the 50th minute. That was as close as we got and Cobh out scored us 3 points to 1 in the last ten minutes to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-17 to 14 points and they no advance to the semi-final stage.
We now have a 2 week break before we play Sars in our Quarter final which will hopefully allow us a chance to get a few more players back from injury.
Team & Scorers: R O’Riordan (0-1), E O’Connor, O Roche, T O’Sullivan, K Cotter, L Collins, A Hynes, C O’Sullivan, R Prendergast, C Barry, O Kielty, D Dooley, A Hayes (0-8), E Cashman (0-1), R O’Callaghan Subs: Cormac Barry (0-2) C O’Riordan (0-2)
MIXED RESULTS FOR u 16’s.
Despite being down a few lads due to illness we had a highly entertaining championship game v Erin's Own on Monday night. Winners went into the Challenge Cup while the losers were finished for the year.
This was a good tight game with good honest hurling throughout the field. Playing against the wind we scored 2 great goals in the first half from Mícháel and a marauding Tadhg....great set up play from Fionn Lynch and Jeff.
The second half continued to be tight with the game level with 4 to go. We finished strongly with a great goal from Cathal to win the game by 4. Final score...4-18 to 2-20. Scorers-
Mícháel 2-4. Cathal 1-5. Finn 0-5. Tadhg 1-0. Luke, Mark, Fionn Lynch, Fionn Collins 1 point each.
Under16 P2 Football Champ County Quarter Final v Ballinora
This was a frustrating game for the lads played under lights in the Mardyke. We conceded 2 goals in the first half that were totally against the run of play and led to us having to battle for the remainder of the game. Despite this we continued to push for a positive result and with a minute to go we skinned the post when pushing for an equalising goal.
Final Score 1-15 to 4-9.
PIHC GAME. Thanks to all who helped out with the County game in the pitch last Sunday. Ballinhassig pipped Kilworth by a single point to qualify for the knock-out stages.
FOOTBALL; On Sunday next September 14th we face Glenville in the JBFC in Carrignavar at 12 o clock. Best of luck lads.
