CO-OP SUPERSTORES CO. PSHC ROUND 3

MIDLETON 1-23 CHARLEVILLE 1-14

After a win over Newtownshandrum and a draw with Newcestown in their opening two games, our senior hurlers travelled to Castletownroche on Sunday knowing that only a win would guarantee them progression to the quarter-finals of the PSHC.

It was the second year in a row that these teams met at this stage of the championship and there was nothing to choose between the teams early on as the sides were level at 0-3 each after ten minutes in front of a big crowd at the splendid North Cork venue.

Midleton edged ahead, 1-7 to 0-7, on 21 minutes when Alex Quirke followed in a shot that came back off the post (and the crossbar) to find the Charleville net.

From there we kicked on and finished the opening half the stronger and led by six at the short whistle, 1-11 to 0-8, with our points coming from Conor Lehane (0-3), Alex Quirke and Mikey Finn (0-2) and Sean O’Meara, Killian McDermott, Cormac Beausang and Pa White 0-1 each. Unusually all of our 1-11 tally in the first-half came from play. More unusual was the stat that we got just one free in the first-half and that came in the 29th minute.

Not surprisingly Charleville, who had won their opening two games in the group, came roaring out of traps in the second period and a Tim Hawe goal on 33 minutes saw them cut the gap to three, 1-12 to 1-9.

But we never panicked and continued to turn out some great hurling and a savage work-rate and with ten minutes to go we led by seven, 1-19 to 1-12. Charleville tried their best but they just could not find a way past a very determined Midleton rearguard and in the end we were fully deserving of our nine point win, the same margin as our win over the same opposition in last year’s championship.

Our second-half points came from, Conor Lehane 0-7 (0-3 play), Killian McDermott, Cormac Beausang, Pa White, David Cremin and Luke O’Farrell.

This win meant that we topped group two and earned a quarter-final meeting with Glen Rovers, which will take place on Friday week, September 19, at 7.30pm in Pairc Uí Rinn.

Midleton scorers: Conor Lehane 0-10 (0-4 Frees), Alex Quirke 1-2, Cormac Beausang, Mikey Finn, Killian McDermott, Pa White 0-2 each, Sean O’Meara, David Cremin, Luke O’Farrell 0-1 each.

MIDLETON: Bríon Saunderson; Luke Dineen, Eoin Moloney, Tadhg O’Leary Hayes, Ross O’Regan, Tommy O’Connell; Ciarmhac Smyth; Sean O’Meara, Mikey Finn; Cormac Beausang, Conor Lehane, Killian McDermott; Pa White, Alex Quirke, Cormac Walsh. Subs used: David Cremin, Luke O’Farrell and Paul Connaughton.

CO-OP SUPERSTORES CO. IHC ROUND 3

MIDLETON 2-16 RUSSELL ROVERS 2-18

Castlemartyr was the venue on Saturday afternoon for our intermediates’ last group game, a local derby with Russell Rovers with all to play for for both teams.

We got off to the perfect start when Eoghan Fraser had the ball in the Rovers net inside two minutes but the men in Black and Amber struck back and by the 13th minute there was very little to choose between the sides as we led by the narrowest of margins, 1-5 to 1-4.

But, playing with a strong breeze, it was Russell Rovers who finished the half the stronger and led at the break by four, 1-11 to 1-7, with our first half points coming from Aaron Mulcahy (0-4 frees), Killian Burke (0-2) and Cian Crowley.

The Rovers got off to a great start to the second-half with a goal in the 33rd minute but we rallied again to lead by one, 1-16 to 2-12, after the third quarter.

A Conor Morley goal put us in the driving seat and looking set to go straight through to the semi-finals but a Bud Hartnett goal in the 57th minute put the Rovers back in front and when they led by three, deep into stoppage time, our championship life hung by a thread because a four point win for Rovers would have seen us eliminated.

But a brilliant late catch by Aidan Ryan saw him dragged down for a penalty and although Aaron Mulcahy’s effort was excellently saved by the Russell Rovers goalkeeper, Aaron knocked over the ‘65 to ensure we lost by two and thus marched onto the quarter-finals after a right scare.

We will now take on Aghabullogue in those quarter-finals, in a repeat of the 2023 County Final, on Saturday week (September 20) at 4pm in Church Road.

Midleton scorers: Aaron Mulcahy 0-9 (0-7 frees, 0-2 ‘65), Eoghan Fraser, Conor Morley 1-0 each, Cian Crowley 0-3, Killian Burke 0-2, Cathal Beausang, Evan McGrath 0-1 each.

MIDELTON: Cillian Hurley, Cathal Gunning, Adam Fay, Thomas Dunlea, Killian Burke, Carthraigh Cronin, Sean O'Sullivan, Adam Daly, Paul Haughney, Aaron Mulcahy, Evan McGrath, Cathal Beausang, Eoghan Fraser, Conor Morley, Cian Crowley. Subs used: Seamus O'Farell, Padraig O’Farrell, Aidan Ryan.

Juvenile

Fé15

On Thursday last we hosted Glen Rovers in the Fe15 league 2nd phase. We went into the game full of confidence as we were topping the table with previous wins over St Finbarrs and Duhallow. While we led for long periods of the game we didn’t reach the levels we are more than capable of. We found it very hard to shake off this tenacious Glen side who seemed to have improved immeasurably in recent years. Despite the opposition being reduced to 14 we couldn’t pull away and they tied the game up to leave the final score at 1-19 a piece in the end. Well done lads but we all know now we need big improvements for the upcoming championship fixtures.

Our Fe16  Division 5 game had to be postponed at the last minute unfortunately due to Douglas being unable to field. Hopefully this game can be rescheduled in the coming weeks.

FÉ12 JAMES O’BRIEN TOURNAMENT 31.08.2025

Midleton Fé12 boys proudly hosted the annual James O’Brien Hurling Tournament at Park South on Sunday, August 31st. The event saw a fantastic turnout and featured a Cup and Shield competition, with visiting teams from both Cork and Waterford. Representing Cork were Midleton, Éire Óg, Erin’s Own, and Cobh, while Cois Bhríde and Abbeyside travelled from Waterford to take part. The Shield final was a competitive clash, with Cois Bhríde emerging victorious over Cobh. In the Cup final, Abbeyside were victorious against a valiant Midleton side by just 2 points in a thrilling encounter. Despite the results, our lads can be very proud of their efforts in both the Shield and Cup competitions throughout the day. The tournament was a great success, filled with skill, sportsmanship, and a wonderful community atmosphere. Míle Buíochas to all the players, mentors, referees, parents, and volunteers who helped make the day run so smoothly. The Midleton panel was as follows: Luke Dunlea, Karl Fitzgerald, Kalvin O’Brien, Dylan Cashman, Olan Connolly, James Daly O’Regan, Jack Ryan, Odhran Murphy, Darragh Grant, Ben Walsh, Oran Byrne, Conor Cantwell, Conall Cody, Tiernan Carroll, Matthew Greene, John Murphy, Finn Harrington, Shay O’Sullivan, Dylan O’Reilly, Brian Murphy, Harry Corcoran, Lochlann Thomas, Richard Linehan, Cian Ryan Sheehan, Cillian Gorman, Kian Davis, Daithí Thomas, Charlie Riordan, Josh Sheehan, Luca Oosthuizen, Tadhg Lane, DylanDaly, Charlie Buckley, Luke Cronin, Matthew Ivers, Oran McManus.

Football Game in Killeagh 06.09.25

After a busy day Saturday in Killeagh it was off to Castletownroche Sunday where we played Charleville at half time of the senior game , a great day out and great experience for the boys

Camogie

U12

Captained by Lauren today, our U12s made the short trip to Killeagh for the second of five of their Phase 4 league matches. Killeagh were strong opponents and matched our girls for effort in all parts of pitch. However, the Midleton girls dug deep and pulled from their experience to let the teamwork kick in and they battled to get the win. A very close game but it shows that hard work pays off. Well done. Thanks to the girls from the younger ages for helping us out today. Thanks to Killeagh camogie and ref Ciara Daly for such a competitive game.

Premier Junior Camogie Championship

Wednesday Sept 3rd V Carrigaline,in Carrigaline.

Carrigaline 2-09, Midleton 4-12

After our  narrow defeat to Tracton the previous week  it was a must win situation in Carrigaline on Wednesday night and the girls duly responded with superb 2nd half display to kill off a very spirited and lively Carrigaline team. The scores were level  at the break 2-04 to 1-07 and despite the wrongful dismissal( mistaken identity) of a Midleton player early in the 2nd half  everyone knuckled down to play some tremendous Camogie to get the win. Truth be told we were fortunate to be level at HT with both of our goals having a degree of luck attached to them. Nonetheless when we had to perform   in the 2nd half we did, The backs were excellent especially the half back trio of Sorcha, Molly and Yvonne. Kate Sullivan led by example with 3 points from midfield and when our forwards got motoring they could not be stopped. Rebecca Cronin and Lucy Wallace got the 2 goals , Faye Dunlea and Sadhbh were excellent when moved to the half forward line and Vivienne Gleeson picked off 0-03 from inside. All in all a much improved performance and we can now look forward to a home QF V Bishopstown on Wednesday  Sep 12th.Both adult teams have now qualified  for QF appearances so plenty of more Camogie still to come this year.

Team: Jill Connaughton, Kate Saunderson, Aoife Fitzgerald , Leah Hogan, Sorcha Cronin, Molly Beausang (Capt) , Yvonne Abernethy ,Julie Murphy, Kate O'Sullivan(0-03), Faye Dunlea(1-04 3f), Lucy Wallace(1-01), Sadhbh Beausang(1-01), Rebecca Cronin(1-0), Rachel Ryan, Hannah Power, Luara Goulding (For Lucy Murphy 2nd half), Caoimhe Cronin, Lucy Kenneally, Vivienne Gleeson (0-03) for Rachel Ryan HT, Muireann Ni Chonchubhair, Niamh Murphy, Ciara McGrath, Rebecca Ryan, Sarah McConville, Robyn Keating.

Ladies Football

Junior Ladies Championship

On Friday evening Sept 5th our Juniors were on the road again as they travelled to Bandon for the second game of their round robin series. Having won their opening game they were seeking their second win. After a slow start the ladies settled well and the scores came their way. Some great defending made it difficult for Bandon to break through the defence. Final score on the evening Midleton 2-08 Bandon 1-07. Well done Ladies. A great team effort. Next up for this team is a home game v St Finbarrs on Thurs Sept 11th in Ballinacurrra with a throw in time of 6.45pm. Best of luck

Intermediate Ladies Championship

Beautiful day in Killeagh….the East Cork town riding high in the charts currently. The woods of glenbower are hidden from the mist for this round 4 intermediate championship game against the traditional East Cork ladies football powerhouse, Inch Rovers. Terrible start with inch rovers scoring a goal and a point within 2 minutes! Great Midleton play Jodie and Lucy Cashman hits narrowly wide. Ava from the kick out wins a free which comes off the upright from Sadhbh and is easily cleared. The game has settled down now after a frenetic opening 5 minutes. Great movement by Midleton’s Jodie to Sadhbh who's fouled and taps over from close range. 1-1 to a point after 10 minutes.  Great interplay by midleton sees Abby rattle the upright and from the kick out Jodie is through on goals but the shot is blocked when a goal seemed likely. From the kick out we gain possession, win a free and the ball is tapped over by Sadhbh for her second point. Another midleton attack which began with a great defensive clearance by Megan Kelly sees another free for a foul on Jodie and Sadhbh taps over again 1-1 to 3. Midleton on top now with Lucy Wallace getting into her stride and then a significant moment….Lucy cashman rattles the net. 1-3 to 1-1. All Midleton now and Abby hits a beautiful point from an awkward angle and the Magpies asserting all over the pitch now with 13 minutes to go to half time.  Good defending by Claudia and Molly and a mighty run by Claire O Brien ends in a free on the 45 yard line. Molly wins possession goes on a great run gets fouled and Sadhbh sends it narrowly wide. Abby drops a good effort short but the Midleton half back line and midfield are well on top now. Abby playing a captains role here today. Another free to midleton sees the ball worked in to Rachel who passes to her sister Abby and she makes no mistake 1-5 to 1-1. Then on the 25th minute out of nowhere Inch rattle the net with a superb goal from 20 yards but the Magpies respond immediately with a great point by Rachel . 1-6 to 2-1 with 3 minutes left to half time. Inch then attack and score a beautiful long range point. From the kick out they win a soft free which also results in a yellow for Molly Beausang but Claire wins possession again,  however the ball is lost in midfield and inch score the final score of the half to leave it 2-3 to 1-6 at half time. All to play for in this tough round 4 battle. Game is evenly balanced as the second half gets underway. The feeling amongst the midleton sideline is a fast start is vital. Midleton make one change Sheila OLH comes on for Sorcha Cronin and that fast start goes to the visitors Midleton. A brilliant run by Ava after a great through ball from Lucy Wallace sees a free converted by Ava to nudge us a point in front. Then Midleton win the kick out and Lucy Keneally taps one over. 2 ahead now.  An Inch attack leads to a free and they make no mistake. 2-4 to 1-8 Midleton in front by 1. Game is evenly poised again and  great play by Rachel, Jodie and Abby sees Lucy K hit narrowly wide from close range. A goal for the begging. Inch reply immediately with a point and it's all square in the 7th minute. A free for Ava from massive distance sails over and with Sadhbh coming back into the fray it's all to play for. Inch score from distance. Inch then have a player yellow carded for a cynical foul. 1-9 to 2-6 and the tension is palpable. Lucy C hits a superb point on the 12th minute to go a point in front. End to end stuff here. A pointed free by the home side and it's all level again with 15 minutes to go. 2-7 to 1-10.  A free for Inch is sent over and inch edge in front now. Has the momentum gone from the brave Midleton girls? A great run by Claire o Brien. A slick pass to Ava on the shoulder who's taken down for a free and a chance to pull level which is converted off the crossbar. All square and all to play for.  Another soft free sees Inch go ahead again on the 20th minute. A fantastic run by Molly and a point on the run. All square yet again 1-12 to 2-9. A turnover on the kick out and Rachel blasts one over. Midleton in front by 1. Great defensive play by Midleton’s Kate Sullivan . Rain now making things difficult with the hard slippy surface, so possession is everything now. 5 minutes to go and it's becoming a scrappy dogfight,  but Midleton dig deep and fight hard for everything and a great point by Lucy K and it's now 2 in front to the Magpies. 1-14 to 2-9. Brilliant tackling by Ava on the half way line and Midleton win a free. Very tense here in Killeagh with time nearly up. It's quickly taken and Lucy C is fouled. Sadhbh taps over and it looks like the points are on their way back to Clonmult.

There it is all over and Midleton had to dig deep here but like they always do, they find a way through grit and determination! Another mighty win for this young, relatively inexperienced Midleton team as they march on into round 5 next Sunday with a home tie against Valley Rovers.
