Good win for Castlelyons minor hurlers
Rebel Óg East Under 18 Division 2 Hurling Championship.
Castlelyons 2-19 St Catherines 2-17.
We travelled to Ballynoe on Wednesday for this minor hurling championship game to play St Catherines. It was a hectic evening for fixtures as St Catherines and Castlelyons teams took on Sarsfields and Carrigaline in a double header on the same evening. The crowd in Castlelyons was huge there was a sizable following in Ballynoe for the minor game also. This local derby lived up to the tag as Castlelyons had a good first half with St Catherines coming back in a hectic second half, but the lads held win to come home winners by two points.
Shane Hallihan and Thomas McAuliffe put us three points up early on as Catherines through good free taking from Gearóid Sheehan came back. However, Ciarán Murphy and Adam Lardner and Darragh Fleming were on target from play, and it was 0-10 to 0-6 for us with 20 mins gone. Then in a Castlelyons attack resulting in a bit of a melee the sliotar squirted out and Adam Lardner was on hand to bang a great shot to the net. While Catherines got scores Ciarán sent over a great free from way out on the wing and Lardner was active again. During this half all our backs especially Cathal Sheehan, the O’Neill Brothers and Dylan Leetch covered well for us in the back while Sean Óg McGuire and Thomas McAuliffe worked hard in the middle. We were leading 1-12 to 0-9 at half time.
On the restart Catherines were coming at us in waves with our backs defending well as both Oran Hickey and Gearóid McCarthy done well on the wings. Ciarán Murphy sent over a ’65 for us and then Oran Hickey had a good turnover and sent in a great ball taken on by Lardner who banged in his second goal putting us on the road. But Catherines had other ideas as they replied with a goal a few points with Sean Walsh in the backs and Kyle O’Donoghe in the forwards doing well for them. It was game on but credit to our lads they settled down again as the defence done very well and when some were tiring subs came in an done well too. Murphy and Lardner kept the scoreboard ticking over for us. With the clock ticking it was a typical local derby with some patches of very good hurling and Alex Quirke won a vital free for us as Murphy pointed to lift a Catherines siege. Then Ciarán Murphy himself was fouled and put over from distance. Catherines came back with a goal, but we held out well to win 2-19 to 2-17. They displayed good spirit and teamwork in this game, and a similar display will certainly help in their next test versus St Vincents in Castlelyons on Wednesday 10.9.25 with the game down for 7.30pm.
Panel: Jude Hallihan; Tom O’Neill, John O’Neill, Cathal Sheehan; Oran Hickey, Dylan Leetch, Gearóid McCarthy; Sean Óg McGuire, Thomas McAuliffe; Shane Hallihan, Darragh Fleming, Ciarán Murphy; Shane O’Callaghan, Ronan Ryan, Adam Lardner Eanna Cotter, Ronan Hickey, Liam O’Riordan, Darragh Bransfield and Alex Quirke. Injured: Sam McCarthy and Khaled Abdelrazik
East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship.
Castlelyons 1-12 Castlemartyr 2-10.
This game was played in Club Áras, Youghal on Sunday morning. The pitch was in good condition but the weather showery and a cross breeze. We played well in the first half with Jamie O’Leary back after a long-term injury showing up well in the forwards for us. Our back line was coping well and Jamie, Eoin Barry, Mark Rosner and Jack Cremin all scored in the first half to keep up with a strong Castlemartyr outfit. It was 0-6 to 1-5 in favour of Castlemartyr in the first half.
Dylan Leetch had a good point for us early in the second half to move within one point of Castlemartyr. Castlemartyr then scored three points in five minutes but again all our back were heroic while our midfield worked hard. The referee Ciarán O’Regan, who often had better games, seemed to dish out a lot of yellow cards in a relatively quiet game and then in what seemed innocuous handbags gave two red cards, one to a Castlelyons and Castlemartyr player. As time went on, we were guilty of some poor shooting, but 0-3 from frees by Jack Cremin put us back into the game 0-12 to 1-10. Then Castlemartyr got a goal from some loose marking, and we came back with a great goal from Shane O’Flynn to leave just a point in it, but time ran out as the referee blew up full time. This ends our interest in this year’s championship as we played three games lost two and one draw and that was against now table toppers Aghada. It was unfortunate that twenty-six players were used up at senior level but then again some of our younger players got the opportunity to play adult hurling which will be good for the future. Thanks to all the players and our management of Chris Cotter, Daithi Whelan, Will Daly and Ian Barry who made a great effort. Also, thanks to our supporters who made the 48-mile round trip to Youghal for the game especially our senior players who finished training at home and drove down immediately to the game.

Premier Junior Camogie Championship.
Castlelyons 2-21 Carrigaline 1-10
Castlelyons premier junior championship were at home to Carrigaline this week and despite their defeat by Midleton in Clonmult Park last week they showed no hangover on Wednesday evening as they romped to a fourteen-point win. It was a big evening for camogie in Castlelyons as we also hosted a Round 2 senior camogie championship game in the new pitch which proved to be a thriller with St Catherines defeating Sarsfields 2-12 to 2-11. There was a huge crowd for the two games and well done to the stewards.
Castlelyons did record a facile victory as they were really on top in the first half with 1-2 from Leah Hallihan, 0-4 each from Evan Cotter and Ciara Morrison, 0-2 from Avril Byrne and 0-1 from Sive Hallihan as we led 1-13 to 1-5 at half time. We managed another 1-8 in the second half with Ciara Morrison scoring 1-2 to win by fourteen points. Great to see Ava Hallihan come on and play part of the second half after her injury. Our next game is on Wednesday 1st September versus Tracton away in Minane Bridge and while this will be tough a result could see us moving on in the championship. Well done on the last Wednesday’s win girls and best of luck versus Tracton.

Rebel Óg Under 16 Division 1 Hurling Championship.
Castlelyons 3-13 St Colmcilles 3-11.
This game was away in Carraig na bhFear against the amalgamated side of that huge city hinterland area Carraig na bhFear and Whites Cross called St Colmcilles. We had to line out without our star players Sam McCarthy and Khaled Abdelrazik who are injured presently. It was a high scoring game with the amalgamated side much taller and stronger than our lads. It was a bit fiery at times, but our lads were well disciplined, and an opposing player was red carded. Castlelyons really stuck to the tack and all the backs defended well with the midfield of Tomás McAuliffe and Cionnaith Cotter doing well with Tomás scoring 1-5 and Cionnaith 0-3 from frees over the course of the game which is a good return for any set of midfielders. St Colmcilles led 3-7 to 1-5 at half time.
Castlelyons rallied with great spirit in the second half as the backs tightened and we compete hard all around the place. The forwards made the most of their chances with Rory Hickey and Ned Condon managing 1-3 apiece. There was a welter of excitement towards the end as St Colmcilles went for the winner. Our backs done well though and hero of the day was Ian O’Riordan who made a mighty catch under pressure at the end to give us an outstanding two points win as referee Padraig Walsh blew the final whistle. Our next game is against Watergrasshill on Monday 8th September in Castlelyons at 7.30pm and a win is vital again to stay in the championship. However, well done to the team and management on a great win up in Carraig na bhFear.
Team: Jude Hallahan; Ian O’Riordan, Liam O’Riordan, Cathal O’Keeffe; Rory Lardner, Eanna Cotter, Rob Cronin; Tomás McAuliffe, Cionnaith Cotter; Rian Lehehan, Rory Hickey, Malik Abdelrazik; Thomas Barry, Ned Condon, Ewan McCarthy. Dylan Barrett and Jimmy O’Riordan.
Senior Hurlers out in the championship this Saturday evening in Páirc Uí Rinn at 6.30pm
Our senior hurlers play Inniscarra in the Co-Op Superstores SAHC at the Páirc Uí Rinn venue on Saturday 6.9.25 at 6.30pm. Victories over Bishopstown and Ballyhea means we have already qualified for the business end of the SAHC and a win over Inniscarra could set us up for a semi-final place. However, Inniscarra have also qualified and taking the short route is their goal too. Unfortunately for Castlelyons we have had more than our share of injuries to date with some gone for the year and hopefully one or two will make it back. Mike Spillane the Castlelyons manager was asked about Inniscarra in his Echo interview recently and outlined: “We've had a few games against them in the Premier Intermediate in the last few years. We're looking forward to that battle now. They had had a couple of good minor teams after coming through, so it's going to be tough and we're under no illusions of how tough a battle it’s going to be.” So, while he is wary, no doubt the lads will be ready, and we wish the team and management the best of luck. Rebel Óg Under 12 Hurling Group 3 Phase 2.
Castlelyons 3-13 Bride Rovers 3-4
Our Under 12 hurlers travelled to Pynes Field to take on Bride Rovers in a must win game for them last Sunday evening. We started well with good scores from Robbie Milward, Cìan o Donovan, and Dara McCarthy. Bride Rovers replied with two great goals and some lovely long-range frees from Jack Roddis. However, and own goal and a great goal from Cìan O’Donovan just before halftime had us leading 2-6 to 2-4 at halftime.
We played with the wind in the second half. Rian Fitzgerald burst through to score from the throw-in. All our backs were under pressure but cleared an amount of ball. We got great points from Liam Cashman, Bobby Hosford, and Cìan to see out the game for a good win.
Both teams are through to the Cup Final in a few weeks and while Bride Rovers were down some good players it promises to be an interesting game. Our next game is at home to Mayfield on this Wednesday evening in football, and on this Saturday, we are looking forward to playing in the Coleman Dillion Hurling Tournament in Erin's Own.

Ned Condon, Castlelyons stars in the Under 14 prestigious Tony Forestal Tournament.
The Tony Forristal Under 14 hurling hurling tournament in Waterford is one of the highlights of the juvenile year since the early 1980s. Indeed, many a good hurling prospect was unearthed at Forristal level. This year there were three teams from Cork entered in this prestigious tournament in the SETU Grounds Waterford on Saturday. East Cork, North Cork and the West plus Mid Cork made up the third team. They were set out in three groups of three and all three Cork teams progressed to the semi-finals. East Cork defeated Limerick and played the West plus Mid Cork in the final. They won a great game by five points. Ned Condon played in all the games at full and centre forward and was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ in the final. Ollie Scanlon and Liam Carr, Bride Rovers and Kenneth O’Connell, St Catherines were also on the East Cork winning side. Congratulations to Ned Condon and the team and especially their manager Ciarán O’Brien, St Ita’s Club and Cork GDA for the East.
