Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 25.8.25
Castlelyons Footballers advance in East Cork JCF Championship.
East Cork Junior C Football Championship.
Castlelyons 2-14 to Carraig na bhFear 0-6.
This football game was played at home, and we were four points up before Carraig managed a score. Eoing McLoughlin was first and then Dylan Leetch had another in between a great save from goalie Stephen Hickey. Mike Griffin the put over a good point and Carraig scored two points to make it 0-4 to 0-2 with fifteen minutes gone. We were under pressure for a bit, but all our backs played well with Matthew Rosner and Sean Leneghan providing an attacking platform. Then Jack Cremin pointed a free and the game really changed with two goals for us. For the first one Shane Flynn worked hard and cut in from the wing before parting across to Mike Griffin who duly obliged by banging to the net. For the second goal Ronan Ryan fielded a high ball turned, beat the full back, and shot into the corner of the net. Jack Cremin closed out our first half scoring with another point to leave us 2-6 to 0-2 at half time.
Carraig tried hard for scores again early in the second half, but the backs done with including Conor McCarthy and Eoin Barry as Eoin made a great turnover that led to a point by Dylan Leetch. We had played three minors in Cathal Sheehan, Dylan Leetch and Ronan Ryan from the start and introduced three more namely Sean Óg McGuire and Tom O’Neill and Kevin Barry. They all done well with corner back Cathal and Sean Óg scoring a point apiece in the second half. Cees Kouwenberg added two points with Jack accurate from both play and frees. Mattew Rosner closed out the scoring for us with point for a good win. Great to see six minors involved with our footballers as they will benefit from the experience. What a pity that due to the ‘decoupling’ rule in Cork we cannot have minors in our senior hurling panel. This would really benefit a club like Castlelyons. The referee Michael Carey had a good game and had four umpires with him for the game. Our next game is on Saturday 13.9.25 at home to Midleton. Well done to the team and management.

Gallant display by our Camogie team in the Premier Junior Camogie Championship.
Premier Junior Camogie Championship.
Midleton 1-15 Castlelyons 2-14.
Castlelyons premier junior championship team travelled to play Midleton in Clonmult Memorial Park, Midleton with a with a strong Castlelyons following. There was a late start due to a misunderstanding in the notification of the referee Cathal McAllister. The game itself was hard and competitive all through with some great spells of camogie. In a swelter of excitement and semi darkness as we struggled to read the jersey numbers Midleton managed to come home by two points.
We started very well as Sarah Morrison and Avril Byrne has two good points from play and Avril assisted Aisling Rosner who sent over a beauty from the wing. But all the time Midleton were holding level with us as they ran at us a bit. They had a shot on goal and Ellie O’Brian made a great save and came out again to clear her lines. All our backs and two Hallihan sisters at midfield, Leah and Emer were really hurling as we traded points. Niamh Barry at corner forward had two assists one which Avril Byrne pointed from play and another Eavan Cotter won a free and scored. Then the Midleton centre forward broke loose and shot which Ellie saved but they were on to the rebound for a goal. Castlelyons stayed in the game with Eavan Cotter unerring from frees and Aisling Rosner winning a great ball then parted to Ciara Morrison who scored from play to put us right back in the game. Suddenly Midleton broke up field for a second goal. The score was now 2-7 to 0-8 for Midleton but Castlelyons were unflinching and got on top again for the last five minutes of the first half and with a high ball coming into the Midleton goal Niamh Bary was on hand to finish to the net to make it a two-point game again. Again, Ellie O’Brien made a great save for us, and Emma Darragh was fouled clearing her lines leaving us down just two points at half time on a score 2-7 to 1-8.
Castlelyons were well up for the game in the second half and more than held their own with this strong Midleton outfit. We had a wave of attacks and with Eavan Cotter unerring like the first half on the frees as we drew level. Then a great catch and score from play by Leah Hallihan put us ahead with seventeen minutes to go. Ellie O’Brien who was mighty in goals all evening made two great saves and our backs cleared. Castlelyons supporters roared on their team as Midleton had gone ahead and the girls responded brightly in the dusk again as Eavan Cotter scored from play to put us level. Midleton did get on top for the last few minutes were winners 2-14 to 1-15. We may have lost the game but no doubt about it Castlelyons showed great resilience against the might of Midleton and learned some valuable lessons. Well done to all the girls including the subs in this gutsy team display and good preparation by the management. The next game is at home to Carrigaline on next Wednesday 27.8.25 at 7.30pm and it is important to keep up the good work. Castlelyons Abú.

Imokilly are on the road for the SHC again and favourites. On Sunday evening they take on Muskerry in the O’Riordan Cup which is the final which of the Divisional/Colleges Section of the Cork SHC. Imokilly had a comprehensive win over Avondhu in the Divisional/Colleges Section while Muskerry defeated Duhallow, Carbery and UCC. Led by Denis Ring they have a wily and hard-working management team and despite losing many clubs to senior ranks in the last few years they are still very strong. On the with very experienced men including John Cronin, Timmy Wilk, Brian Lawton, Mick Russell and Cork stars Ciarán Joyce, Jack Leahy they should live up to the favourite tag and advance.
