Glenville GAA 2-Day Mini Camp a Great Success

Glenville GAA held its annual 2-Day Mini Camp recently, and it proved to be another brilliant occasion for the club and community. Over 65 boys and girls took part, enjoying top-class coaching in football, hurling, camogie and ladies football.

The two days were filled with games, skills, fun and – thankfully – plenty of sunshine. The camp created a great atmosphere at the pitch and showcased the enthusiasm and talent of the next generation of Glenville players.

The club extends a sincere thank you to all the children who took part, to the coaches and helpers who gave their time, and to the parents for their continued support.

The future is certainly bright for Glenville GAA.

Premier Junior Football Championship

Inniscarra 4-18 Glenville 0-8

It was a tough evening for Glenville as they came up against a sharp and clinical Inniscarra side in the Premier Junior Football Championship. Despite the scoreline, Glenville’s players showed great character and kept working right to the final whistle, earning the appreciation of their loyal supporters.

While the result was not what the team had hoped for, there were plenty of positives to build on as Glenville now regroup and turn their focus to the next stage of the Championship.

Glenville U15s Battle Hard but Fall Short Against St Nicks

Glenville U15 footballers were in action last Thursday evening in The Glen for Round 2 of the league, where they faced a strong St Nicks side. Despite a spirited performance and some fine passages of play, Glenville came out on the wrong side of the result, with the game finishing St Nicks 4-11, Glenville 1-14.

The home side made the brighter start, with a fine early goal from Alex Magner settling the team and putting Glenville in front. St Nicks, however, gradually clawed their way into the contest, replying with well-taken points of their own. Darren Cahill added a score before Magner struck again with a superb “two-pointer”, while Colm Murphy showcased his pace to kick two excellent points in quick succession. At the break, St Nicks held a 2-7 to 1-4 advantage.

The second half began with Nicks making the most of the wind and hill advantage, striking two goals and two points inside the opening eight minutes. To their credit, Glenville never dropped their heads. Some fine team play created scoring chances, with Alex Magner, Matthew Counihan, Darren Cahill and Colm Murphy all finding the target. Despite several valiant efforts on goal, the crucial breakthrough never came, and it was St Nicks who finished stronger with a handful of well-taken points to seal the victory.

While the result was disappointing, Glenville can take encouragement from a battling display and the character shown throughout. These are the type of tough games that will stand to the team as the league progresses.

Team: Pa Sullivan, Tom Fennell, Liam Moynihan, Alex Downey, Conor Kearney, Kallum Fahy, Alan Smith, Alex Magner, Eoghan O’Mahony, Matthew Counihan, Darren Cahill, Dara O’Driscoll, Aaron Sheehan, Donogh McHugh, Colm Murphy, Sean Dunlea.

Next up for the U15s is another tough test against Carrigaline on September 11th.

Junior D Football Championship

Our Junior D team, featuring a mix of the very young and the not so young, put in a great display against St Catherine’s on a
fine summer evening. It was an entertaining game of football throughout, with Glenville competing strongly before a few late goals swung the result in favour of the visitors.

Congratulations to St Catherine’s on their victory, and well done to our own lads who gave a spirited performance that was warmly appreciated by the supporters.

Glenville Minors Hit Six Goals in Championship Win Over Midleton

Glenville minors continued their East Cork Division 1 Championship campaign on Wednesday evening at home against Midleton. Coming off the back of a heavy defeat to Killeagh two weeks earlier, Glenville knew that nothing less than a win would keep their qualification hopes alive.

To their credit, the lads made a blistering start. In the opening ten minutes, Glenville created three clear goal chances but a mix of over-eagerness and poor shot selection kept the ball out of the net. Persistence eventually paid off, however, with some excellent combination play leading to goals from Jayden and Mike.

An unfortunate injury to full-back Dara after 15 minutes took some of the wind out of Glenville’s sails, but the team kept their composure. Further goals from Shayne and Mike, along with some well-taken points, pushed Glenville into a commanding position. Midleton rallied before the break with two goals of their own, but the half-time score still read 4-6 to 2-2 in favour of the home side.

The second half was a tighter affair, with some questionable decision-making at times threatening to hand Midleton a way back into the game. However, Glenville steadied themselves and sealed the result with goals from David and Jayden. At the final whistle, Glenville emerged deserved winners on a scoreline of 6-9 to 3-5.

While areas for improvement remain, it is hard to be too critical after a six-goal display. There were excellent passages of attacking football throughout, and the lads showed plenty of character when the pressure came on. Best wishes go to Dara for a speedy recovery from his injury, with all hoping it won’t keep him sidelined for long.

Team & Scorers: C. Sheehan; A. Casey, D. O’Neill, Z. Curtin; C. McHugh, B. Ryan, S. O’Leary (0-1); E. Forde, S. Curtin (1-3); D. Barry (1-1), J. Counihan (0-2), J. Madden; J. Hennebry (2-1), M. O’Riordan (2-1), D. McCarthy. Subs: L. Guichard, J. Long, E. Hartnett, W. Manley, F. Duffy, H. Wain.

Next up for Glenville is a crucial home tie against Erin’s Own on Tuesday, September 3rd, another must-win fixture. The strong home support last week was greatly appreciated, and the team will be hoping for the same again in their next outing.

Busy Week for Glenville’s U14 Premier 2 Footballers

It has been a hectic few days for Glenville’s U14 footballers, who were in action twice this week in the Premier 2 Football Championship.

On Monday, the boys endured a difficult evening against Carrigtwohill, but they responded superbly in their final group game on Saturday morning against Aghada. With a semi-final place already assured, and despite being hampered by a few injuries, the team was determined to deliver a performance — and they certainly did.

Glenville hit their stride early, with two well-worked goals from flowing team moves, but Aghada rallied strongly and a late goal left Glenville trailing by three points at half-time. Facing into a stiff breeze after the break made the challenge even greater, and at one stage Glenville were four points down. However, the lads showed great spirit, producing a storming finish with slick passing and sharp attacking play. A flurry of second-half goals turned the game on its head, and Glenville emerged deserved winners on a scoreline of 8-4 to 4-12.

That victory sees Glenville into the semi-final in two weeks’ time, where they will meet Valley Rovers. By coincidence, the same two clubs will also clash in hurling next Thursday night in the Premier 2 Championship semi-final, setting up an intriguing rivalry in both codes.

There was further good news on Thursday night as Glenville’s second football team booked their spot in the Division 5 Championship semi-finals with a strong win over Aghada. Fixtures and dates for all these eagerly awaited semi-finals will be confirmed in the coming week.

Glenville U12s Edge Out Douglas in Entertaining Clash

Glenville U12 Team 2 were in action on Tuesday evening against Douglas in what proved to be a highly entertaining contest. Douglas dominated the early stages and put the Glenville defence under pressure, but once the backs settled and got on top, the platform was laid for a strong fightback.

With the midfield and forwards linking well, Glenville produced some fine scores to edge in front. Their relentless workrate and determination were the standout features of the performance, and in the end they secured a deserved victory on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-08.

It was another encouraging display from this young team who continue to show great promise as the season progresses.
