Killeagh GAA Club Notes August 10th 2025
CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Lúnasa 10, 2025
CONGRATULATIONS
We start this week with a Bualadh Bos Mór for Cormac Deane, named at centre forward on the Electric Ireland Minor Star Hurling Team Of The Year. It’s well deserved, and hopefully the first of many national awards to come Cormac’s way. Congratulations also to our Fé 14 hurlers who recently won the East Division 1 Hurling League Final, defeating Erins Own by 2-12 to 0-07 on July 30th.
MATCH REPORTS (ADULT)
The graph is rising! After a hectic week of adult hurling championship fixtures, we have two wins and a draw from four fixtures, and 66 players playing championship in one week! Not bad!
Co-Op Superstores Senior A Hurling Championship Sunday August 3rd Killeagh 2-26, Na Piarsaigh 2-24
You’ve read the reports by now about the Senior A match against Na Piarsaigh so we won’t rewrite anything here. Suffice to say that it has been universally acclaimed as the standout match from across the five grades of the opening set of 30 matches in the Co-Op Superstores hurling championship. It was as perfect an evening as one could ask for to play championship hurling – still and calm, a pristine pitch (well done to hosts Midleton, on point as always), an expectant and appreciative audience. Na Piarsaigh were excellent and will have a big say in this championship yet. We had to be at our best and yet we may have come away, like we often have before, with nothing. But sheer will to win and determination to claim and distribute the dirty ball, and a huge team effort where no man was ever left isolated, saw us over the line in an enthralling battle. Ryan McCarthy and Barry Walsh rifled in two spectacular goals and added points as well, while Sean Long and Shane Smiddy both gave performances as good as any they have given over the past decade. At the back Andy Walsh, Brendan Delaney, Allen Keniry and co manned the trenches any time that Daire Connery and his buddies threatened to cut loose. It was fitting that Cathal Fitzgibbon should get the final score as he had been as annoying as a dying wasp to the northside wasps all evening long. We head to Ballynoe on Friday evening next to take on a wounded and thereby dangerous Fermoy who will endeavour to upscuttle our season while kickstarting theirs. No team wins a county on the opening day, but step one is one step in the right direction, for once! Well done to all on the pitch and on the sideline who contributed to this critical first step.
Team: Philip O’Neill, Brendan Delaney, Pa O’Brien, Allen Keniry, Andy Walsh, Dinny Walsh, Ben Walsh, Sean Long, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ryan McCarthy, Evan Lane, Richie Long, Shane Smiddy, Dylan McCarthy, Barry Walsh, Colm Leahy, Ciaran Leahy.
East Cork Oil Junior A Hurling Championship Monday August 4th Killeagh 0-23, Cobh 1-20
Seventeen hours later, on a windier Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, we were back again in unison to take on Cobh in the first attempt to defend our Jamesy Kelleher Junior A hurling honours, garnered before “Killeagh lalalalalala” had made it into anyone’s consciousness at the tail end of 2024. Cobh, like Na Piarsaigh the evening before, came ready to hurl and to hunt, and almost derailed us. Daniel Walsh hurled and scored from the start like a senior hurler, and he had huge support from the accurate shooting of Keane Budds (2) and cousin Sean Walsh (3), while Gary Leahy and Mikey Fitzgerald did their own angry wasp impersonations, giving us a 12-10 lead at half time. Ominously, Timmy Wilk and his team mates were not going anywhere, and an early second half miracle save by Fionn Murphy only kept the flood at bay for a matter of minutes before Cobh raised the only green flag of the day to take the lead for the first time since Timmy’s ninth-second opener Paudie Mackey fired over two quick points to put us back in front, a lead we held until (surely future Cork senior?) Wilk’s outrageous sideline wind-spun point on 59 minutes looked like it would give Cobh victory. Cometh the hour, cometh the man! Jamie Fogarty had scored our first point from play on 5 minutes, had added a second half way through the second half, and he saved the day with his third and most important white flag, straight and true from the half way line, as the opening and only minute of injury time commenced. Cathal McAllister was happy enough to send everyone home with a share of the spoils, and in truth, so were we. Well done to both teams on a high quality junior hurling championship game, again! Next up we have a tricky high noon assignment on Sunday next August 17th in Ballynoe against a confident Bride Rovers team who already have two points in the bag after their first round victory over Carrigtwohill. No pressure lads!
Team: Fionn Murphy, Gary Lehane, Christy Coughlan, Aidan Morrison, Robbie Treacy, Kevin Murphy, George Walsh Wallace, Rob Sinclair, Mikey Fitzgerald, Jamie Fogarty, Sean Walsh, Keane Budds, Daniel Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Gary Leahy, Matthew Murphy.
East Cork Oil Junior B Hurling Championship Friday August 8th Killeagh 2-16, Cloyne 1-17
Arguably the standout performance of the past week was the Junior B team’s unlikely victory against a very strong Cloyne second string on Friday evening in Shanagarry. Chris Scanlon was MC and he did a fine job. A slow start meant that twelve minutes had elapsed before Andrew Leahy raised our first white flag, and we seemed to be sinking when trailing by 7 points to 3 after twenty minutes. Then a switch was flicked and we rattled over six points in as many minutes, with two from uncatchable Dave Ogbebor, and four from unstoppable Dan Landers, pushing us into an unlikely 0-9 to 0-8 half time lead. Cloyne had overturned this (12-11) by the 40th minute, before Ciaran O’Rourke’s cameo yielded a brilliant point and a poacher’s goal by the 50th minute. In that crazy ten-minute window Cloyne had crashed their own excellent goal past Colin and Dan Landers had buried a penalty after Ciaran had been impeded. And yet, by the 60th minute, this hugely entertaining game saw us level and heading for shared points. Then that warrior Kieran Lane swung over a superb long distance point and Andrew Leahy added another. We had to endure a number of Cloyne attacks in the seven minutes of added time but our defence stood firm, with Conor Meade and Ritchie Landers letting nobody pass them by and Aaron Fitzgibbon finishing off an excellent performance with some critical late possessions and interceptions. Outstanding result lads, the remaining matches in this group will be extremely challenging – first up is Midleton in Ballinacurra on Saturday next August 16th at 1.00 p.m.
Team: Colin Walsh, Pierce Geary, Conor Meade, Conor Burns, Dan Smiddy, Ritchie Landers, Ben Budds, Padraig Leahy, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Dan Landers, Andrew Leahy, Davy Kelleher, Aaron Walsh, Ciaran O’Rourke, Dave Ogbebor, Kieran Lane.
East Cork Oil Junior C Hurling Championship Sunday August 10th Killeagh 1-09, Carrignavar 2-22
Starting the recruitment process for our fourth adult hurling team at player number 50 meant it was always going to be a challenge to get the numbers for the opening championship match against Carrignavar on Sunday morning. With close to another team of possible players aged 17 and over unavailable for a variety of reasons, we were in truth starting the recruitment somewhere in the 60s rather than at number 50. Never ones to shirk a challenge, Richard and Brian worked the oracle and got a team together, which included the recruiter in the recruited! In the circumstances, this was the victory, not the final score-line! The game was evenly matched in the first half with great work from Michael O’Donovan, Dale McMahon and the free-taking of the evergreen Padraic Carroll keeping us in touch. As the second half progressed, Carrignavar’s squad of 30 players eventually pulled away but a late goal by Michael O’Donovan following a superb catch and pass by Darragh O’Connor was worth the wait. Thanks to all who answered the call, especially to our former senior hurlers. Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can for your club!!
Team: Colm Crowley, Ado Galvin, Tadhg O’Connor, Ian Landers, Stephen Murphy, Brian Collins, Dylan Coleman, Michael O’Donovan, Dale McMahon, Brendan Barry, Padraic Carroll, Diarmuid Buckley, Richard Lynch, Cian Fogarty, Darragh O’Connor, Dara McDonald.
MATCH REPORTS (MINOR)
Rebel Óg Division 1 Minor Hurling Championship Watergrasshill 0-13, Killeagh 1-18, July 16th 2025
We opened our Minor hurling championship campaign away to Watergrasshill on 16th July. The first half was a tight, cagey affair. On a greasy pitch, defences were on top early. We got good scores from Ben (3), Fionn, Cormac Delaney, John and Cormac Deane to leave us a point ahead at half time.
We improved as the game went on. A brilliant solo goal straight after half time from Cormac Deane, after a long run and superb finish to the top corner of the net, settled us. We got on top at midfield with Andrew outstanding and we used the ball better. Defensively we were solid, we gave up no goal chances. Adam had a great game in goals, Oran and Jack played captains’ parts at the heart of defence and Cian drove forward. We pushed on with some great scores from Ben (4), John (2), Cormac Delaney (2), Alex Fogarty, Andrew (2) and Cormac Deane saw us finish winners by 1-18 to 0-13. We have plenty to work on, but it was important to start with a win.
Team: Adam Barry, Tadgh Considine, Oran Cunningham, Rian O’Connor, Cian O’Riordan, Jack Coleman, Cathal Brennan, Andrew Brenner (0-2), Alex Howey, Alex Fogarty (0-1), Cormac Deane (1-2), Fionn Brennan (0-1), Cormac Delaney (0-3), Ben Geary (0-7, 0-2f), John Farquhar (0-2) Subs: Tom Power, Billy Guerin, Jack Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Seanan McDonnell
Rebel Óg Division 1 Minor Hurling Championship Lisgoold 2-13, Killeagh 3-23, July 30th 2025
We continued our Minor hurling championship campaign away to Lisgoold on 30th July. We got off to a good start with a goal from Ben after a clever pass from Andrew. We used the ball well to create opportunities upfront. Ben and Cormac were causing Lisgoold big trouble with their movement and our defence was on top with Tadgh, Oran, Rian, Cian, Jack and Cathal tigerish in the tackle but also using the ball to great effect. 8 further points from Ben, 3 from Cormac Deane and 1 each from Fionn and Cormac Delaney saw us lead 1-13 to 0-6 at half time.
We started the second half sloppily with a soft goal conceded which was immediately cancelled out by a great run and finish to the net by Fionn. Lisgoold got on top for the next 15 minutes and reduced the deficit to 4 points with 15 minutes remaining. The lads kicked on from here. John Ogbebor and Andrew got on ball and Fionn was winning possession and using it well. We pulled away with 1-4 from Ben (the goal came after a cool finish after a 40 yard run and clever pass from Cormac Deane), 2 points for Fionn, 1 each for Cormac Deane, John Ogbebor, John Farquhar and Cormac Delaney. A good win, but plenty to work on also.
Team: Adam Barry, Tadgh Considine, Oran Cunningham, Rian O’Connor, Cian O’Riordan, Jack Coleman, Cathal Brennan, Andrew Brenner, Alex Howey, John Farquhar (0-1), Cormac Deane (0-4), Fionn Brennan (1-3), Cormac Delaney (0-2), Ben Geary (2-12, 0-3f), John Ogbebor (0-1) Subs: Tom Power, Billy Guerin, Jack Farquhar, Patrick Dineen, Seanan McDonnell
Rebel Óg Division 1 Minor Football Championship Killeagh 3-15, Glenville 1-07, August 6th 2025
Killeagh defeated Glenville in Round 2 of the Division 1 Minor Football championship at home (for a change against Glenville!) on August 6th. We played with the aid of a strong breeze and got off to a good start with two early points from Cormac and two from Cathal. Glenville then caught us on the break with a goal and a point. We got a boost before half time with an excellent 2-pointer from Cathal and 2 more points from Cormac who had a super game.
We faced a strong breeze in the second half, but it seemed to suit us with more space upfront as Glenville pushed forward. Andrew, John Ogbebor and Ben were more involved, and Cormac continued to score heavily. A quick burst of 2-4 (2 goals from Cormac, 2 points from Ben, 1 each for Fionn and Andrew) saw us into a commanding lead which we never looked like losing. We were defensively solid throughout with Seanan, Patrick, Oran, Tadgh, Rian, Jack and Cian competing strongly and Alex and Fionn won great aerial ball and drove forward. Further points from Andrew, Cormac, Cathal and Ben and a goal at the death from Cormac, to complete his hat trick, saw us run out comfortable winners. It was a great team performance with all 20 players contributing well on the night.
Team: Seanan McDonnell, Patrick Dineen, Oran Cunningham, Tadgh Considine, Rian O’Connor, Jack Coleman, Cian O’Riordan, Alex Fogarty, Fionn Brennan (0-1), Andrew Brenner (0-2), Cathal Brennan (0-1-3, 0-1f), Ryan Murphy, Cormac Deane (3-4), John Ogbebor, Ben Geary (0-3) Subs: Cormac Delaney, John Farquhar, Tom Power, Billy Guerin, Jack Farquhar.
